Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Abbey came west to attend the University of New Mexico on the G.I. Bill. His natural inclination toward anarchism led him to study philosophy, but after earning an M.A. he rejected academic life and worked off and on for years as a backcountry ranger and fire lookout around the Southwest. His 1956 novel The Brave Cowboy launched his literary career, and by the 1970s he was recognized as an important, uniquely American voice. Abbey used his talents to protest against the mining and development of the American West. By the time of his death he had become an idol to environmentalists, writers, and free spirits all over the West.

An Abbey "Must Read"

Mesmerizing. For whatever reason, I have been on an "Abbey Kick" recently, and Jack Loeffler's portrait of the irascible anarchist/philosopher/writer/friend was a welcomed addition to the total picture of this remarkable man. All other considerstions aside, the thing that will stick with this old man forever was the deep-seated friendship among Abbey, Loeffler and Doug Peacock. Simply amazing and oh-so-refreshing. Abbey fans, read this more than once.

Undeniably Written by a Friend

I knew going into this book that the author, Jack Loeffler, was Abbey's friend. It became clear after reading Adventures with Ed just how close of a friend Loeffler was to him. I mean these two guys seemed to spend a considerable amount of time hiking, drinking beer, and discussing the meaning of life. And without a doubt, it's reflected in the second half of the book.

The first part serves as a solid biography of Abbey's childhood, short tour in the military during WWII, academic wanderings, and general carousing around for women. Loeffler does his homework and provides key points along the way that help the reader understand how Abbey's early searching shaped his philosophy. Abbey's strong embrace of anarchism, for instance, rooted early and grew stronger during his UNM days.

The last half of the book, or the post-meeting-Jack Loeffler period is an intimate look at Abbey the writer and friend. Loeffler's fondness for Abbey is strong and comes through on these pages. The reader gets to tag around with Jack and Ed on a number of extended outings into the high-desert wilderness.

Overall, Loeffler provides a unique, insider's portrayal of one of the most out-spoken and influential writers on protecting and embracing the wild characteristics of our nature world.

Good reading for the Abbey fan, but not great

Among the pictures included in the book is one of Loeffler and Abbey side by side, with Loeffler's arm around Abbey's shoulders, apparantly trying to pull himself up to Abbey's tall stature. That picture sums up my impressions of the book. Although it gives some rare and quite special experiences which show private sides of Abbey's character and personality, I couldn't get past the impression that Loeffler is using Abbey as a platform to legitimize himself--imagine the nerd in high school who dotes over the quarterback, making sure that everyone knows that they're friends.

I think that the best parts of the book are in the second half. The first half is a badly organized lesson in anarchy, and a poorly veiled attempt to establish Loeffler as a legitimate anarchist philosopher. The second half provides insights into Abbey's persona, and Loeffler does a pretty good job at painting a believable picture of Abbey, one that I hadn't seen before. I really liked the story of the death and burial, and the road trip along the river in Texas where Ed wanted to "go for a swim."

Overall, I'd give it a 2.5 star rating, but rounded up to a three because it does provide some good insights into a person I find increasingly fascinating. Sorry Loeffler, it's Ed, not you.

Advice from a Pastoral Mentor

Lutzer writes this book from his years of pastoral experience from a heart of a servant seeking to faithfully love and encourage other ministers.

This makes the book a great starting point in approaching pastoral issues that frequently arise in ministry.

In this book, Lutzer presents a helpful and concise resource for pastors and those who feel the Lord calling them to pastoral ministry. Every pastor needs mentors, and Lutzer provides some helpful mentoring through Pastor to Pastor.

Lutzer takes a fatherly approach to some key issues in pastoral theology. Some issues addressed include dealing with congregational expectations, surviving church disputes, dealing with problem people, dealing with church politics, restoration of fellow ministers, and burnout. If you're a younger man serving as a pastor/elder or have a desire to do so, I would encourage you to read this brief, but worthwhile, book.

THE UPS

First, Lutzer's advice is level. He demonstrates wisdom and humility in his discussion of these issues and encourages the same approach in the reader. His insights are beneficial for a younger generation of ministers.

Second, the book is both concise and profound. Chapters are roughly four to six pages in length, but contain a cogent handling of the topic addressed. All of this while having a warm-hearted, devotional tone.

THE DOWNS

First, several points seem to reflect the moralism that seems to fit so comfortably in the cultural religious right. Along with this tends to come a short-sighted ethnocentricity which is, regrettably, the case in this book.

Second, an unfortunate number of problematic cliches make an appearance. For instance "forgive and forget" and referring to Arminianism as Armenianism.

CONCLUSION

Not a perfect book, but an excellent tool for those seeking wisdom on some of the trickier aspects of serving as a pastor/elder.

As a lay leader in a local church and active in missional activities, I have close contact with Pastors. Sadly, many of them feel like they are the proverbial "Lone Ranger:" suiting up every day to feed their flocks, hearing the worst their congregations can dump on them, writing and delivering engaging, exciting, truthful and helpful lessons every Sunday; and counseling those for whom life has become not worth living. A piece of my past

I grew up in Mexico and I grew up reading this book. To revist its light prose, delicately drawn village and carefully delineated shadows was an incredible pleasure. I'm so glad I have this copy in my possesion, I've missed it.
I wish I knew more about Josephina Nigli, though.

It's wonderful to read the comments here, I personally think Niggli was an outstanding writer, ahead of her time! for those interested in her life, I recommend by critical biography on her, published by Univ.of New Mexico Press.

Wonderful!

A wonderful, enchanting book.Characters are strongly drawn, the descriptions of people and places are almost poetic, but never florid. Each of the ten chapters is a self-contained story but there are various threads that weave their way thru all the stories and bring together in surprising ways. There are surprise endings in some stories, and endings that leave the reader almost breathless because of how perfect (and unexpected) they are. I grew up in Mexico and so much of what Niggle writes rings so very true. The most enjoyable book i've read in years—I was sorry it ended.

About the Author
Robert P. Lightner (Th.B., Baptist Bible Seminary; Th.D., Dallas Theological Seminary; M.L.A., Southern Methodist University) is Professor of Systematic Theology Emeritus at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught courses in biblical studies and theology for thirty years. Excellent overview of basic theology.

While not as detailed as other books, this is an excellent starter for a person interested in knowing the basics of Christian theology. I especially like the format of each chapter. Professor Lightner offers a brief summary of the topic, then he gives the historical perspective, from there he talks about the agreements held by orthodox Christians, then the areas of disagreements some may take (for example in the chapter "God the Holy spirit" he sites the areas of disagreement whether the miraculous gifts are still for today or if they were only for the early church just to name one example) He finishes out the chapter with a conclusion and questions. It is worth noting he makes his views quite known but is very charitable to those holding different viewpoints. In an age where many want a more "Seeker Sensitive" or "User Friendly" church and sound teaching has taken a back seat, this book is an invaluable resource for the instruction of solid Biblical doctrine to lay persons.

Excellent handbook on Systematic Theology

Dr. Lightner's clear, concise presentation of the classical dispensational position makes this book a must have for any Bible Teacher's library. He does and excellent job of presenting historical and biblical background as well as differing opinions to each of the major areas of the Christian Belief.

Excellent textbook for basic theology

Lightner presents the basic points for premillennial dispensationalism in an easy-to-read style. He covers much ground offering the reader a synopsis of 2000 years worth of orthodoxy. While not as voluminous as Grudem or Erickson, the book nonetheless helps the layman understand various issues of popular debate in evangelicism.

About the Author
Paul Yoder, PhD is a Professor in Vanderbilt University's Department of Special Education. As the past director of the Observational and Quantitative Methods core for the Kennedy Center of Vanderbilt University, he has consulted for numerous single subject and group design researchers for over 20 years. He has conducted methodological studies and written methodological and measurement articles and chapters for both single subject and group design literatures. Among these are 3 simulation studies relevant to sequential analysis. He currently teaches a recurring course on observational measurement for doctoral level students at Vanderbilt and is frequently asked to provide workshops on various aspects of observational measurement, including sequential analysis. He has been and continues to be an active user of observational measurement in his research on early communication in children with disabilities.

Primary research activities of Frank J. Symons, Ph.D., are supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and they focus on improving the assessment and treatment of severe self-injurious behavior among individuals with developmental disabilities and pervasive developmental disorders. Dr. Symons was a research scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a postdoctoral fellow at the John F. Kennedy Center at the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He is the co-author of Behavioral Observation: Technology and Applications in Developmental Disabilities (Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2000).

This publication is a seminal and much needed text in observational research. It has succeeded in putting together all important aspects of observational research that were previously only in research articles or researchers' heads. Observational research at large will be better for it.

I've used this book for a few years now on a project using behavioral observation. It's been the go-to reference for us, and one I keep on my desk and use often. I have the paperback and Kindle version, and like being able to access chapters that I need when not in my office. Would highly recommend for anyone doing behavioral observation. This was my first time using this method, and it was great for me both when I was starting out and just learning, and later in the project when I needed more technical advice.

Finding a Voice in the West

A moving critical study on those silences that confronted women artists in the West, focusing on professional, non-professional, and traditional women artists' struggles to find voices and to cope with markets for their work. Jensen discusses several artists whose careers were shadowed or distorted by husbands, some of whom were themselves artists or collectors. She also treats extensively the history of a Native American basket maker's struggles with market forces, traditional cultural artmaking and art-using practices, discrimination, and family forces. Covering late pioneer days through the rise of Hollywood and spanning painting, photography, literature, dance, and crafts, the book surprised me with its concise and compelling portrayals of many societies and art worlds. Jensen communicates immediate and personal interpretations of the "lifeways" of silenced and near silenced women artists, as well as some who succeeded--at their great cost--in finding a voice.
