An extremely fun and useful book
By Raphael Lasar
First published in 1974, this book is a great collection and introduction to old-time and bluegrass tunes for guitar. It includes a number of standards such as Blackberry Blossom and the Sailor's Hornpipe, as well as lesser known tunes such as Weave and Way (on Norman Blake's Back Home in Sulphur Springs).
It is full of music that is quite beautiful and fun to play, but which also serves as exercises for building hand strength, fingering technique, and speed. The versions as written out are fairly basic - some tunes include variations - which allows for both learning the songs and developing ones own take on them.
While all of the songs have been recorded - some dozens if not hundreds of time - it would be nice to have this updated with a CD sometime.
Aside from that this collection is ideal as a reference source for those interested in this style of music and as a learning tool. I'd highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in country, folk, and bluegrass guitar.

Font is wrong for tabulature and ruins the book.
By invisible
This is a nice little book except for one major problem. The font is wrong for tabulature numbers so that the 0, 3, 6, 8, and 9 look too much alike when they are obscured by the lines.
This isn't as much of a problem for songs you know but is extraordinarily annoying for learning new songs. So until you learn the song you'll find yourself having to stop and cross reference with the musical notation to make sure that squiggle is a 3 and not a 6 or 0.
For learning the slower songs you can of course write in the correct number. But that just slows you down learning the runs. Imagine trying to actually read and interpret your corrections while getting up to speed to play eighth note runs in 2/2 time and you realize just how much of bother this simple stupid error by the printer has become. An easier way of fixing things rather than writing the numbers is to color in the 0's with a pen so they are black dots and adding a tiny tail to 6's and 9's and a line under 8's, leaving the 3's to be the original illegible squiggle.
Edited to add: For a fakebook which has clearer tabs of a different style and different font one might look at Guitar Pickers Fakebook: The Ultimate Sourcebook for the Traditional Guitar Player, Contains over 250 Jigs, Reels, Rags, Hornpipes & Breakdowns from All the Major Traditional Instrumental Styles by way of comparing the appearance.

Very enjoyable book!
By Doc Holiday
I bought this book when it was first published and I was trying to keep up with my brother who makes fiddles and plays skillfully. Its full of great ideas for licks and many of the arrangements sound great. They were clearly arranged by a master flatpicker for players ready to jump out of the rhythm backup role into playing leads along with banjo, mandolin or fiddle.
I agree with the criticism that a companion CD would be a great asset and since several other great books with cds have been subsequently published, this one is a little outdated. (There were no cds in 1974 when the book was first published). A second criticism might be that many of the tunes are stripped-down, meaning somewhat simplistic. Still, that has its advantages in that one will soon find they have a lead line or two to add or enjoy and it leaves a lot or room for the guitarists' personal style to shine through with the melody lines.
All that having been said, the book contains some really fun arrangements; I love Soldier's Joy, Arkansas Traveler and Sailor's Hornpipe, all fun and manageable arrangements. Chicken Reel is both fairly easy to catch onto and absolutely hilarious. The Devil's Dream, Salt River and Blackberry Blossom arrangements alone make the thing worthwhile. I liked it enough to finally replace it. The original I loaned to someone a decade ago and never got it back. I recommend it to you heartily!
