I am glad that person is not my instructor because the fingerings ...

I am studying classical guitar in college and I picked up this book because I saw it in one of the instructors' offices. I am glad that person is not my instructor because the fingerings in here are very strange. One in particular, "Lagrima" by Tarrega uses a fingering that requires too much movement and is also not the composer's fingering. Tarrega meticulously noted the fingerings for his songs, so why would you change them other than to make them less complicated? Complicated fingering is not the mark of musicianship, it actually demonstrates a lack of technique. However, the printing and typesetting are very nice, so it looks very attractive and could be useful as a starting point for instruction, just make sure to check the fingerings before using the book.

I love this book!!! Perfect for beginners/hobbyist!

I bought a lovely guitar and wanted to really get into classical guitar. I knew very very little about it. All I knew was that I sure do enjoy listening to it. With this book I have been introduced to the master composers. With college classes before...and a busy work schedule now. There is very little time for me to get really good at music reading. The tabs help me to warm up to it. Everyday...before I head out the door or after I come home from work I open this book and play a few peices. I have many many favorites but I don't limit myself to the favorites. There is so much music this book has kept me busy for several years now. I enjoy playing so much!

Great for beginners

If you've never mastered any audio before and want to know what it is, this book will give you a great start. The best part of the book are the audio files. Mr. Anderton takes one of his songs through the mastering process step-by-step. After each step is a separate audio file so you can hear the difference each step made. If you already have audio editing software, you can try to duplicate what he's done to make it a more hands-on book.
The next best thing about this book are the references to software out there that are available for beginners. iZotope's Ozone, for example, is a standout.
I only have two gripes. The first is the song used for mastering is techno and I'm more of a hard rock guy. Of course this is very subjective. The other gripe is the exact setting on some of the mastering steps wasn't specified. This would've made it easier to try and duplicate the steps.
Overall, I highly recommend it to those wanting to start with audio mastering.

Too small and basic

Despite the price, this book is tiny. It is only 41 pages and has an insultingly large typreace. This would be a great book for about $.... It is more like a children's coloring book.
For anyone who has ever used audio software, bypass this book. The information is very basic. Opening a plug-in and playing with different parameters will provide more information and knowledge than is offered in this book. Quoted directly from page 21, "If the bass isn't loud enough, boost the low frequencies." Or from page 24, "Compare your work with something that sounds great, and come as close as you can." Thanks for the insight.
This is a perfect example of he perils of buying a product via the internet. If I had seen the book in a retail store, I could have passed and found a book more suitable fo me.
This may be a good introduction for someone who's never done any audio work but it doesn't justify a $... pricetag. It should be a low priced pocketbook, at best.

Missed the Target

It's basic. No, I mean *really* basic. I'm not sure who the target audience for this book is. Maybe folks who might be mastering an audio project, but who don't know what the audio spectrum is, or how parametric equalization works, or exactly what a compressor is. To be fair, it does bill itself as "The
absolute beginners guide...", but frankly I have a hard time understanding how anyone could get to the point where they have a CD to master without a better understanding of audio concepts than this book gives. I read the whole thing (48 pages) in one sitting, without straining, and did get a few tidbits that will help me, but in my opinion it largely missed the mark. The whole book might make a good basis for a chapter in an absolute beginner's guide to digital recording. I know Craig Anderton can do better than this.
Wishing I'd bought something else...

GREAT BOOK

I am getting ready to take my first travel assignment as an ICU RN and this book has really helped me organize all the paperwork I need for traveling. It has some great information about contracts, taxes, what to expect, how to interview and pick the right assignment for you. Very easy to read and interesting stories from the writer's personal travel experiences. This book has all the information that anyone will ever need about traveling without overwhelming someone taking their first travel assignment. I really enjoyed reading this book and would reccommend it to everybody looking for a great travel assignment.

Lots of info, helped me decide it's not for me

what a crazy world nursing is. Sure there's a "shortage" but what they don't tell you is that there is a glut of nurses looking for work, and a shortage of hospitals willing to fork out the money to staff the hospital correctly. Which is how I ended up considering doing travel nursing.

For over a year I was being courted by an agency, and everything was in place. When I left the last staff position I had, I began to look at what they had available, thinking it was a good way to transition to my next hospital.

What I found instead was a sort of high-pressure, used car sales type tactics. The recruiter was always really keen on this "great opportunity" or other, always not quite what I had asked for (a little too far of a commute, the pay wasn't enough, there was no support, etc, etc)

I once did find a slot that seemed like it might be good, but before I could ask anything about the position it had been snatched up.

So, this book did a lot of good in pointing me toward the types of questions to ask, the things to look out for, what to make sure I get in writing up front. I think I might have taken one of the positions, but because I was well-prepared by this book, I didn't fall for some "great opportunity" that would not have been right for me.

These recruiters get a huge bonus for signing you on, and getting you into a slot--but it's YOUR back, and it's YOUR license, so be careful. You need to read this book to learn what to ask, what to look out for, and never be rushed into an assignment that isn't right for you, simply because of their pressure. You are the talent, and they need you, not the other way around. In the end, I got fed up with the high-pressure baloney and submitted a few more applications and found a job that is perfect for me, right near my home, awesome commute, more than double what I would have made through the agency, and I can't be happier.

I'm still glad I read this book, and I think it should be a mandatory read by all nurses, not just for those considering travel, but for anyone going on any interview. I have applied the questions to permanent job interviews with great success.

The info in this book would be something I referred back to if I had taken a travel assignment--all that stuff like taxes and moving and paperwork and forms...it's all here.
Worth the price I paid for it.

Excellent

I really liked this commentary. The author had some excellent analogies and stories that I used while teaching through James. He was also good at breaking out the Greek meanings behind certain key words in the epistle. Lastly, he brought out things that were not in the other commentaries that I read. I highly recommend this book.

A worthwhile addition to the shelf

Exploring the Epistle of James is a volume in the John Phillips Commentary Series. For clarity's sake, it is written by John Phillips. Dr. Phillips was long a part of the Moody Network, helping teach others the Word of God. The entire series is available from Kregel.

James is written as a section-by-section commentary. There is an outline that breaks down the whole book, and then each segment is given individual attention through the remaining 200 pages. These comments focus more on the practical implications of the passage than the linguistic or cultural markers behind them, but the historical issues are not left out entirely.

Overall, James does not lean too heavily on digging back into the Greek language. Instead, the primary focus is drawing on the New King James translation that is used throughout the work. Phillips makes his commentary accessible in this manner, as anyone can use it.

Further, the outline of the book is straightforward. This runs counter to some attempts to make James more complicated, and instead develops linear thoughts from the text. This also becomes an easy borrow for teaching and preaching.

While the practical outlining of James makes Exploring James helpful, there are some shortcomings that drive the reader to need an additional James resource. First, there is very little discussion of the background issues of James. It is assumed that James was the brother of Jesus and the first author of a New Testament document. Further, the introduction makes several assertions which, while they are possible, are not certain. The serious student is advised to consult an additional resource to consider whether or not Phillips has filled in the blanks properly.

My largest concern is with the heavy assumption that Phillips makes in Exploring James regarding the legalism of James himself. While it is certainly plausible, it is not necessitated by the text and should at the least be treated in discussion rather than assumed.

One other question regarding Exploring James is the inclusion of an essay at the end as an appendix. The essay addresses some issues with Martin Luther, the Reformer. While Luther will long be connected to the Epistle of James due to his dislike for it, the essay does not address Luther's opinion on James. Rather, it treats Luther and Zwingli's clash over the nature of the Lord's Supper. This is fascinating--but wholly unnecessary. It's inclusion has no real bearing on the remainder of the text.

In all, I have only a few volumes on James on my shelf, but this will remain there as a helpful resource.

Excellent commentary!

The John Phillips commentaries are excellent. Mr. Phillips approaches Scripture literally, and provides historical background to the passages, and a great deal of insight. I only wish that his commentaries were longer and more detailed.

Well worth the money!

About the Author
Though raised as an evangelical Christian in North Africa, Dr. Raouf Ghattas has been deeply influenced by Islam and the Qur'an. A native speaker of Arabic, he is able to teach Christians about Islam and the Muslim worldview from primary sources. Dr. Ghattas served for more than twenty-five years as a missionary to Muslims across the world and earned his doctorate in Muslim evangelism from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Carol Ghattas began her work in the mission field in West Africa before returning to the United States to earn a Masters of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has served alongside her husband in the mission field for more than seventeen years, living in Muslim countries throughout North Africa and the Middle East. She has also studied the lives of Muslim women and, under a pseudonym, has authored several books about the difficulties Muslims face in coming to Christ.

This resource fills a unique niche in Muslim ministry writings. It is a sura by sura analysis of the Qur'an from a Christian perspective. It compares the theology of the Qur'an to biblical theology and notes bridges for communicating the truth of the gospel which may be present in each sura. It is quite practical for anyone seeking to enter into constructive spiritual discussions with Muslims and also as a companion to reading the Qur'an in preparation for Muslim ministry in general. It is comprehensive yet concise. I can thoroughly recommend this resource to anyone wanting to share spiritual truth with Muslims.

New Mexico, isolated until 1878 when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad laid the first span of track in the territory, in just thirty months had over 1,000 miles of rail line. Soon trains of freight and passenger cars, the marvel of the industrial age, crisscrossed the territory delivering eastern fashion, settlers, and tourists and hauling away lumber, coal, silver, and cattle.

The great railroad-building era in New Mexico ended with World War I, when eleven common carriers operated 3,000 miles of track. The subsequent history of New Mexico railroads is one of persistent struggle, slow eclipse, and corporate consolidation. But as this volume reminds us, steel rails, roaring engines, and clattering cars will always be a part of New Mexico’s heritage.

A fantastic survey

This isn't a long review, but I simply couldn't let the only review sit here at a 1-star rating when the review wasn't even on the book. The review was of Amazon's service.

This is a fantastic survey of New Mexico's railroading history, loaded with many photos and covering everything from the famed railroads such as the AT&SF to the A&SM (Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain) railroad whose trestle is famously still seen on a drive up to Cloudcroft, NM.

Exellent treatise on New Meixco railroads

David F. Myrick is the definitive historian on so much of the Southern Pacific operations: a three volume work on Nevada, five volumes on Arizona, and this, on New Mexico. This is his usual excellent work, that somehow keeps getting updated - and I've picked up each of the updates, religiously! Not quite as thorough as the Nevada and Arizona books, but really good and there just isn't any other work like it out there. Can't go wrong on it.

New Mexico Rails -- and a Little More

This book contains detailed information which is well organized and well illustrated. It exceeded my expectations with over 250 pages and over 200 photos.
The author extends his subject area some by including street car systems in New Mexico, railways which connect into West Texas, and both railways and street car systems in El Paso and Juarez. He even includes photos of a collection of 14 old railroad passes.
Throughout the book, he includes information about the economics involved -- not just where the lines were built, but also how and why routes were built and why many were eventually merged or abandoned.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of New Mexico and anyone interested in railroad history.

It is what it says

The book is okay - it is what it says: "A beginner's guide". The instructions are simple and easy to follow. By using drawings, they were able to emphasize things that pictures wouldn't show. Because a harmonica's holes are numbered, they were able to use a system of notation (similar to that used on stringed instruments) meaning you don't have to read music to play the songs. And the progress throughout the book is natural: starting simple and getting slightly more complex as you go. But I want to repeat: this for definitely a book for beginners. If you have even a little experience playing harmonica, this book will be too basic for you.

A Must For Learning To Play The Harmonica

There are a plethora of books out there on how to learn to play the harmonica. Jon Gindick, one of America's best harmonica teachers has written a book that will definitely set you on the right track for learning how to play this wonderful little instrument.
The book is divided into sections that will walk you carefully through the first steps of learning about the harmonica. These sections are broken into smaller, easier-to-digest pages which will make is simple to understand the basic concepts of playing. By the time you have worked your way through the book you will have a solid foundation in the instrument and will be ready to play with other musicians or to work on more complex forms of music.
Either way I found this book enjoyable to read and would even suggest that more experienced players go through the lessons in order to hone their basic skills. This book is a definite must for any harmonica player.

Sometime in the mid-80's, I took a delivery job with a small company. I had alot of time on my hands between deliveries; to break the tedium, I decided to learn to play the harmonica. Fortunately, I came across "The Natural Blues/Country Harmonica". Of all the books for beginner harp players, this is by far the best. Without taking himself too seriously, the writer lulls the student into a calm, relaxed approach to playing the harmonica, which is perfect for this instrument. With the helpful illustrations and clear instructions, students new to the harmonica will find they can play with confidence before they even realise how much they have learned. This is a must buy as a gift for young harpists, or if you are giving a beginner their first harmonica.

I adore this slice of life on the eastern New Mexico plains, the Llano Estacado. Cabeza de Baca is an amazing lady, and her childhood remembrances are well worth reading for history buffs, who've probably already enjoyed it, as well as for people who just like to know how people lived on ranches in this era.

This is one of the better books I have read on Northern New Mexico history and culture....This book is FULL of phrases and definitions...Most of the stories are either first hand or oral history passed down to Fabiola..If you want to get a feel of life in New Mexico back in the day..This is a GREAT book....It aslo has a good chapter on Vincent Silva and his criminal ring..Very interesting....I'm going to get Fabiola's book on New Mexico cooking next!!.......Green Chile......mmmmmmmm

I am a first generation Coloradoan. My family is from New Mexico. I grew up with stories from my family when they grew up in New Mexicon. These stories have been passed on from generation to generation. We could never convince my father or his family to write these stories down, but they are commited to memory. Books like this are very nostolgic to me and my family. It was worth the purchase.

Susan Masino has been a rock journalist for twenty-nine years and is the author of Famous Wisconsin Musicians and Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy: My Life and Times With AC/DC, Van Halen and Kiss. She pubished her own music newspaper Rock Central, for siz years and has written for WI Music News, a monthly music news column, since 1991. She created a radio show for 94.1 WJJO in Madison, WI, which she produced and hosted from 1997-2004.

Solid Effort and Fair Overview for an Unauthorized Biography

This book is really more of a tribute than a real biography. Ms. Masino is clearly a serious AC/DC fan and her effusive enthusiasm for the band leaches through in almost every paragraph. In my view, this is a good thing. It takes a real fan to do justice to a band like AC/DC; any author only mildly interested in this type of music(e.g., Springsteen or Bjork types), or, more likely, anyone biased by envy, could do a tragic disservice to those of us interested in learning about this legendary rock and roll institution. Ms. Masino is interested in only telling the real story, a story which has some up and downs but is none the less one of the most majestic and awe-inspiring stories in the history of music. Her admiration only fuels our own as she reviews the evidence which supports the proposition that this is the best rock band in history....or at a minimum is matched only by the Beatles, The Stones, and Led Zeppelin for both album sales and mythological intrigue.

A few frustrations surface, however, as you read this tome. First, there is lots of tour data, and reading it is mind-dulling. "Two dates in Holland and then three in France and then back to the UK to record and then on to some barn to write new tracks..."--stuff like that. Endlessly. But I guess that is the price you pay for reading a bio about a band that has toured incessantly for going on four decades. And, due to her efforts, I was able to nail down the probable dates in the late 70's when I saw Bon-era AC/DC at two Days on the Green, and a Brian-era show at the Cow Palace. That was fun to do, as I didn't keep good records as a teenager and I thought I'd never excavate that information. But it was in this book.

Another frustration is that Ms. Masino paints a picture of the band members which is woefully superficial. I was really hopeful to gain better insights as to the thinking and personalities of these guys, especially Angus and Malcolm. I've spent over 30 years in awe of these gentlemen from Down Under, and when I use the word "Mythological" I am not exaggerating. At 5'2", and all sweaty and pimply, Angus is still larger than life. He's up there with Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Churchill, Howard Hughes, Hefner, Mick & Keith, John & Paul, Bruce Lee, Ronald Reagan, Jack London, John Muir, John Wayne, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Evel Knievel, Vincent Price, Michael Caine, Clint Eastwood....you get the idea: The Full Pantheon of World-Altering Revolutionaries. Angus is on that list, and towards the top in my opinion. I really wanted to know all about him. Where does he live? What does he smoke? Drugs? Children? Does he have other hobbies, or does he live only to burn incredible riffs into the fabric of the Universe with his SG? How did he get so good on the guitar?

We have a few of these questions obliquely answered in this book, but the picture is thin at best. Angus paints, he has a place in Holland, he drinks some tea, he is really funny, he has a wife named Ellen. He treats all the crews with respect, and although an ultimate superstar, there is not even a hint of arrogance in his bearing. He is a solid man in terms of meeting his commitments to labels, venues, and fans. I already knew that last fact, as does everyone who ever saw them in concert. AC/DC delivers the goods.

There is another part to that which makes Angus so amazing. It is not just the great music, the primal riffs which are so mathematically perfect and neurologically affecting. There is another dimension to his appeal. Angus represents a man who has found his Ultimate Calling, his pre-destined mission in the Universe. Having found that mission, he applies 120% of his energy, day after day, year after year. He is the ultimately fulfilled individual, he has met his true love and he is sweating all over her, and her six strings, in a city near you as I write this, just as he has for the last four decades. It is perhaps this aspect I wanted to learn more about. Was he born with This Calling, or did he just fall half-arsed into it? He's a lucky little fella regardless!! Ultimate fulfillment.

Ms. Masino has a little bit of connection with the band, but not really a whole lot . It does not appear that there were any interviews with the band which were conducted by her for this book. She mostly quotes them from various guitar magazines, and then she quotes a lot of peripheral players from the crew and other musicians who knew the band in their earlier days. There are some really weak simulated hand-written letters from a road-crew guy who corresponded with Ms. Masino for a few years. I think it would have been more effective to simply quote him rather than "reproducing" his letter in faux handwriting. Ms. Masino does recall some of her rather fleeting interactions with the band at post-concert meet-and-greets. These interactions don't add much to the picture, but to her credit it does not appear that she embellishes at all, because these are really minimal encounters, the type of which AC/DC probably has with thousands of journalists and fans every year. Overall, it was like she was trying to make herself part of the AC/DC story, and it appears that she clearly is not part of the story in any significant way.

Ms. Masino also inexplicably starts writing in italicized print at various points. I could never quite nail down her methodology in using this technique. Are the italicized portions her inner thoughts, her whispered confidences, or are they personal asides? Oh well, I guess it visually made the page a little bit more interesting. One final criticism: sometimes incomplete sentences work, and sometimes they don't. Ms. Masino ought to stick to complete sentences. I found her intermittent sentence fragments really distracting.

In the end, though, I found myself really liking Ms. Masino. She did roll up her sleeves and work hard on this, and given the constraint that she did not have access to the band for interviews, I think she still did a good job. And there is zero gratuitous dirt, which would have been sacrilege in my view.

As I initially mentioned, her biggest credential for doing this book is her love of the band and her appreciation of their musical style. I really enjoyed her description of when she first saw them. She had met them upstairs at a club, and she presumed that they were mere mortals. She then saw their set, and by the third song she realized they were of divine inspiration. I appreciated her reaction, because it was similar to my own when I first saw them. And, since then, every band has paled in comparison. Metallica, Springsteen, Roth-era Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Rage Against the Machine, U2, and so many others. No other band comes close. It takes a few days to emotionally recover from an AC/DC concert; they are just on that amazing level where you know you are peeking through a crazed "door of perception" when you watch them play.

The book does a nice job on Bon and his legacy. It probably covers Bon better than Angus. You do come away feeling like you know Bon, and of course you like him even more for what you have learned.

Finally, there are some nice photos in the book. I had never seen most of them and they are worth having. The hardback version of Ms. Masino's book is very well made: it's cloth-covered hardback, which you don`t see often nowadays. Omnibus Press is to be commended. This is a book you may want to keep in your permanent library, and so I recommend getting it in the hardback version.
