Meet Louie Mendoza, a jazz musician who likes to talk--who can't seem to stop talking for the life of him, in fact. It's 1973, the comet Kahoutek is coming, and the world may be about to end. It doesn't quite end for Louie, but the morning hours find him at San Francisco General Hospital, telling his tale to a stranger while he waits to hear the fate of his lover, La Mollie. As Louie recounts his journey from her apartment to his gig in the Mission District, a shooting, a broken leg and his frustrated efforts to find his way home, he lets us in on what's brought him to this place, this moment, and his love for this woman.
"His characters, funny and serious, switch from the desert to the city, from rock to mambo, from tears to laughter. He captures the expansive spirit and capacity de su gente."--José Antonio Burciaga
"Reveals new dimensions of Islas's talent: his ear for the street and his gift for comedy. Delightful."--Diane Middlebrook

This is the chronicle of one horror-filled day in the life of Louis Mendoza, saxophone-playing San Francisco hipster, Chicano philosopher, and lover of an Anglo pseudointellectual. Speaking from a hospital bed to an unnamed listener, Mendoza talks about his life and discusses his newfound respect for Shakespeare. Part of what makes the book work so well is Islas' ability to make Mendoza charming and insightful enough to arouse sympathy even if he's barely removed from the raffish-ridiculous Beat generation. Many of his similes are quite original: "That's how it is with memory, man, it's sneaky like the border patrol, waiting to pull you in just when you think you're free." And Islas' re-creation of early 1970s San Francisco, including its adventurous gay nightlife, is wonderfully provocative. Throughout, Islas' style and storytelling abilities are dynamic enough to turn what could have been the most hackneyed situations into truly engrossing novelistic incidents. Tragically, Islas died of complications from AIDS in 1991. This posthumous novel indicates his career was moving in a promising direction. Aaron Cohen

This is a wonderful book. I think it's the best one by Arturo Islas, even though a friend (Paul Skenazy) had to synthesize it into existence (due to Islas's death from AIDS before he could do the job himself) but in keeping with the direction he received from Islas. The self-educated, financially challenged sax player Louie Mendoza is a wonderful character who falls for this super hyper highly educated and well-off Anglo woman he calls La Mollie, which creates all sorts of cultural and class-related firework. The novel is Chicano literature and to some extent gay lit (Louie's brother Tomas is gay and Louie moves in and out of his world), and not to demean either, but it's much more than that. It crosses all sorts of boundaries of geography, culture, class, education, race, and spirituality. It's hard to get into the novel at the beginning, but once you fall for Louie, you won't be able to put it down. The social satire and satire related to the church is spot on, at least in my opinion. Consider this observation, made in Louie's characteristic, down to earth voice that gets right to the heart of the matter: "When I look at those white adobe buildings [the Spanish missions in California]. all I can think of are all the Indians who got whipped and killed putting em up just so some Spanish monk could lord it over em all humble-like and superior and get made a saint for doing it." The book is full of gems like this. Louie's place may be at the bottom of the social ladder, but the wisdom he acquires from all of his experiences put him near the top. And if you like Shakespeare (yes Shakespeare!), you'll also love this novel. It so rich in content that I plan to read it again.

This book was a nominee for the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association (BABRA) Fiction Award. La Mollie is a surprising gem of a book. If only Mr. Islas were still alive to write some more...
