In this warmly witty account, Joel Vance re-creates what it was like for a city kid to have his life changed almost entirely when he is transplanted from his Chicago birthplace to his father's home country in rural Missouri—where basketball was the major social event and a night out might be a trip to the burger joint in town.

While Vance writes about his relatives and their roots in Missouri and Wisconsin, his focus is on his growing-up years in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The anguish of adolescence is detailed, but lightened with Vance's special skill for humor. Dating, French kissing, drinking, hog castration, and vocational agriculture are just a few of the experiences that Vance recalls. His comical encounters with the local citizenry, his social misadventures, and his fumbling exploits on the high school basketball and baseball teams are interwoven with reflections on weightier matters, such as the mismanagement of the Missouri River and its wetlands by the Corps of Engineers. He shares his emotions, his dreams, and the realities of his high school days, capturing the essence of the experiences of many who lived in the Midwest at midcentury.

Sounding a little like comedian Jeff Foxworthy, Vance (Billy Barnstorm, The Birch Lake Bomber, and Grandma and the Buck Deer) writes of moving from Chicago to rural Missouri when he was 13 and growing up there in the Fifties. "If you're nostalgic for the good ol' days, chances are you never experienced them," he says, though he is saddened by today's complacency. He touches on important issues, such as the loss of wildlife habitats, the Army Corps of Engineers' mismanagement of rivers, big business farming, and race relations. He also recounts personal experiences, like the first kiss he gave a girl, just as she turned her face: "My lips made a horrible slurping sound and I left a wet trail like a garden slug." Whereas baseball was king in Chicago, it was basketball that ruled in rural Missouri, and Vance distinguished himself by shooting at the wrong basket, having forgotten that the teams switched ends of the court at half-time. Home was the town of Dalton, Missouri, where Vance and his^B parents moved from an apartment on Chicago's South Side in 1947, when he was 13. They lived in this town of about 200 people through most of the 1950s. Vance's father had been born in rural Missouri, and many of the author's relatives lived there. They moved so that his father could supervise a 960-acre farm that he and his two partners had bought several years before. Their home was a former hotel--17 rooms without running water or an indoor toilet. Vance remembers listening to their big Zenith art deco console radio (to Walter Winchell, the Carter Family, Amos 'n' Andy, and the Grand Ol' Opry), drinking beer, smoking, dating (his fear of girls made him feel "like a stray dog that desperately wants affection but is spooky about asking for it"), and playing on the high-school basketball and baseball teams (though he was "a quintessential benchwarmer"). Great Fun

This was a fun and nostalgic read. Although Vance is "just a little" older than I am I sure experienced some "blast from the past" type feelings as I read the book. Vance has a real way with words, descriptive and informative. It was a little sad to remember how it was growing up in the 40s and 50s and knowing it will never be as innocent as it was then, whether you lived in a big city, small town or a "really small" town such as he did. Basketball was king in much of the Midwest and social events were pretty tame. And most of us had similar relationships with our parents . . . they were the adults and we were the kids and never the twain met yet there was enormous unspoken love that crafted us into who we are.

A book worth buying!

I really liked this book! Joel Vance writes stories in a way that makes you feel he was sitting in the same room telling it out loud. Some of the funny things that happened to him growing up have happened to me too, even though I grew up in a way different time. I bet you will find some parts that fit your history too! It's hard to put down, because you know there is another chuckle around the corner!

About the Author

Arthur Freeman (EdD, ABPP), is visiting professor in the Department of Psychology at Governors State University, University Park, IL, a clinical professor in the Department of Psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Director of Training at Sharidan Shores Care and Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. He is a Distinguished Founding Fellow at the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Freeman has published widely in CBT and has lectured internationally. His work has been translated into twelve languages. He holds diplomas in clinical, family, and behavioral psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and is a Fellow of APA. Springer Publishing Company has published numerous of his books, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Nursing Practice, co-edited with Sharon Morgillo Freeman (2004), Cognition and Psychotherapy, now in its second edition, coedited with Michael J. Mahoney, Paul DeVito, and Donna Martin (2004) andBorderline Personality Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide to Comparative Treatments, coedited with Mark Stone and Donna Martin (2004, paperback 2007).

Mark H. Stone, PsyD, is a member of the Doctoral Care Faculty and a Distinguished Service Professor at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Stone earned his BA and BM at North Park University, his MM at the Chicago Musical College, and his PsyD in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology. He is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Professional Psychology and School Psychology and of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists. He is a Certified Supervisor and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) counselor for Community Services for Drug and Alcohol Abuse (CSADC). He teaches courses in research methods, statistics and psychometrics, assessment of dementia, and other neuropsychological topics. His additional interests include Rasch measurement, data analysis, attention and memory, treatment of sex offenders, psychology supervision, and organizational counseling.

Donna M. Martin, PsyD, is an instructor and director of the academic support program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she received her doctorate in clinical psychology. In her present position she works closely with medical students and graduate students to enhance both their successful performance and to remediate problems that arise in the graduate student population. She is currently involved with institutional outcome research to measure the effectiveness of this program's, and the school's other various interventions, on success in the first year of medical school. Dr. Martin is also manager of the Center for Brief Therapy, the PCOM training clinic, and is involved in the supervision and training of psychology practicum students and interns. She has sat on the board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Dr. Martin has published several articles and chapters, and has edited and co-authored a chapter in the second edition of Cognition and Psychotherapy with Arthur Freeman, EdD, Michael Mahoney, PhD, and Paul DeVito, PhD. About the Author
Mary Ann Dutton, PhD, is a clinical psychologist specializing in family violence and other forms of victimization. She received her doctorate from the University of Utah and is Professor of Clinical Psychology at Nova University, where she also serves as the Director of Clinical Training. Dr. Dutton's research and clinical interests in the area of victimization have come together in her specialty program within the Nova University Community Mental Health Center. She is the Founder and Director of the Family Violence Program, an applied clinical research program that offers services to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, which also providing training to doctoral and post-doctoral students. In addition to being the author of numerous articles and book chapters on battered women and post-traumatic stress responses, Dr. Dutton's expertise has provided her with many opportunities to become involved with the legal system. She frequently conducts forensic evaluations and provides expert witness testimony in criminal and civil cases involving domestic violence and other forms of intimate victimization.
