About the Author
Kathleen Mackay is a journalist and author who has written widely on arts and culture. Her articles have appeared in Time, People, Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and other publications. She has co-authored four books, including contributing an essay to The Anne Rice Reader (Ballantine) about her lifelong friendship with Anne Rice. A graduate of Harvard, she lives in Concord, Massachusetts with her husband, David Garcelon.

Oh no, not another bad book about Bob Dylan

Where do I start about how bad this book is - maybe on p. vii in the Foreword where the author states "As fascinating an autobiography as Chronicles is, however, it does not provide great illumination of Dylan's character, his likes and dislikes, his personality..." My Lord, was the author reading the same Chronicles as I was? And on p. 4, the author travels along Rt. 2 in Western Massachusetts, saying, about the town of Erving, Mass., "Erving's small commercial area features the predictable Wendy's, McDonald's, and the occasional gas station." Well, as someone who travels Rt. 2 everyday, I can tell you there is NO Wendy's or McDonald's in the little blip of a town that is Erving. So, dear reader, you may go on at your own peril. This book is NOT for anyone who may know anything about Bob Dylan. It may be geared towards elementary school children. But then, that would be a travesty, because why should they be reading inaccuracies? The writing is third rate, the "research" is 95% from other sources, and it sadly becomes another Bob Dylan book that he would shake his head at and cringe.

Not worth the money

Sure, there's some "intimate insights" about Bob Dylan in this book, but not much that we haven't read before in other books. However, my primary issue with this book is that there is WAY WAY WAY too much written about the people who are the ones giving the information about Dylan. I mean if you're really interested in the history of "Peter, Paul, and Mary" and if you really want to know how the "Band" got it's start and if knowing trivia about Liam Clancy, Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson and others, then this is the book for you. If you want insights about Dylan there are a lot of books out there with MUCH more information. Again, if you're wanting to know more about Bono, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, then I'd suggest buying this book.

Decent basics, but focus is on Christian church boards.

Base content is OK. However, be aware that this book is geared towards the selection of members for and running a Christian church board. Very frequent biblical references and text such as "a godly life, Bible knowledge, spiritual maturity and discernment are primary qualifications" (for serving on a board) undermined the usefulness of this text in preparing a guideline report for the non-religious not-for-profit I work for.

Best in the genre

Other reviewers criticize for narrow scope. It should be expected, given the author and publishing house, that the slant would be toward Christian non-profits (but not just church boards). Having said that, it's the best I've read on the subject. Clear, concise, to-the-point--no fluff!

Still valuable information

I had the honor of meeting Ms. Brody right after she first published this book. She was attempting to provide long-distance caregiving to her mother at the time- from the opposite coast. I found her to be a very approachable person. I admit to hero-worship as I was then in the midst of my grad school career and it seemed that every other article on aging issues was quoting her at that time. I just purchased this updated edition. The concept is the same---- as women we bear the brunt of the caregiving tasks and it isn't easy. I see a few men taking on the task in my work environment and I wonder how they have managed to overcome the conventional women are the caregivers ideology?

Before 1865, slavery and freedom coexisted tenuously in America in an environment that made it possible not only for enslaved women to become free but also for emancipated women to suddenly lose their independence. Wilma King now examines a wide-ranging body of literature to show that, even in the face of economic deprivation and draconian legislation, many free black women were able to maintain some form of autonomy and lead meaningful lives.            The Essence of Liberty blends social, political, and economic history to analyze black women’s experience in both the North and the South, from the colonial period through emancipation. Focusing on class and familial relationships, King examines the myriad sources of freedom for black women to show the many factors that, along with time spent in slavery before emancipation, shaped the meaning of freedom. Her book also raises questions about whether free women were bound to or liberated from gender conventions of their day.            Drawing on a wealth of untapped primary sources—not only legal documents and newspapers but also the diaries, letters, and autobiographical writings of free women—King opens a new window on the world of black women. She examines how they became free, educated themselves, found jobs, maintained self-esteem, and developed social consciousness—even participating in the abolitionist movement. She considers the stance of southern free women toward their enslaved contemporaries and the interactions between previously free and newly freed women after slavery ended. She also looks closely at women’s spirituality, disclosing the dilemma some women faced when they took a stand against men—even black men—in order to follow their spiritual callings.            Throughout this engaging history, King underscores the pernicious constraints that racism placed on the lives of free blacks in spite of the fact that they were not enslaved. The Essence of Liberty shows the importance of studying these women on their own terms, revealing that the essence of freedom is more complex than the mere absence of shackles.

Strickland Distinguished Professorship in African-American History and Culture. Good documentation women's roles in the history of the national parks

This book is an essential reference if you are interested in the role of women in U.S. national parks, especially in those years when it was unusual for women to work for the NPS. While most of the book focuses on individual women, the later chapters of the book start to discuss broader women’s themes such as pay equity, gender roles, or the nature of the work environment.

Unfortunately, Kaufman does not spend much time theorizing about how gender matters. For example, she sometimes struggles to distinguish between things that happened *because* the people involved were women, and those that were essentially the same things men were doing. The volunteer work done by rangers’ wives is clearly gendered. So are the many women’s clubs who served as advocates of parks from Mesa Verde to Mount Vernon.

However, consider some other cases. Did Mary Meagher’s biological research in Yellowstone depend on her being a woman? How did it affect her impact on park policy? It would be better if Kaufman would engage these questions and make the case that there was a distinctive woman’s voice in such cases.

The book also tends to be a bit uncritical about what women have done. Though she documents all the things that women have done for the parks, Kaufman does not criticize any of those things. America’s national parks have seen a lot of criticism over the years – for politicized wildlife management, for errors in historical restoration, for telling biased stories and excluding some groups, among others. In this book, women were not part of any of those things.

That said, it’s a go-to reference if you want to know things like, “what have women done in Chaco Canyon?” It will also provide a starting point for your own investigations into broader themes.

Polly Welts Kaufman is one of my heroes, and a colleague, but that aside this book is "the book" on women in the National Park Service. Guess what? We weren't always welcome! Polly tells some wonderfully inspiring stories in this book, and her career-long devotion to and knowledge of women's history really shines here.

1) As one would expect from Tony Trischka, the tabs are accurate.

2) The lesson progression is logical, but also permits an experienced player to dip into specific topics and expand skill sets.

3) The tabs themselves are VERY clear and readable, one of the best printed examples of tabulature I've come across.

4) The physical binding and paper quality is very good. The publisher did not stint on putting out a quality product that will last, even with regular handling.

All you need to know to play great banjo

I have personally taken lessons from Mr. Trischka. His knowledge of the 5-string is remarkable, and his skill is highly refined. He is versatile in many styles and his 2007 IBMA Banjo Player of the Year award is a testimony to his career.

Somehow, Tony managed to pack the essence of his understanding of the banjo into this book! If you want to be a "complete" player, someone who plays great AND understands what they are doing, not just replicating something you were shown, this book will get you there.

Best Banjo Book

I am taking group banjo lessons and was told to buy this book. Unfortunately I have not been able to attend all the sessions. The book is so explanatory that I can keep up by practicing at home. I am not saying that it isn't better to have a real person help also, but this book is about as close as it can come to learning the banjo on your own.

Excellent collection

As noted, this is a colleciton of mandolin tab, not standard music notation. If you can read standard notation, you're better off with any number of fiddle books (including the Fiddle Player's Fakebook from the same publisher) but if not, this is a great reference. I read for guitar and bass, but not mandolin, so I've gotten a lot out of this book.

This series concentrates on traditional and old time music, which suits me perfectly as that's what I play on mandolin and banjo. (I also have the Banjo Player's Fakebook, which has most of the same songs- though not all- in frailing and clawhammer styles.) Just about every classic old time song, and a lot of the popular Celtic songs can be found here- Shady Grove, Little Beggerman, Joe Clark, Sleepy Maggy, etc. If you're an ear player or tab player just starting out, this book is a great place to learn a lot of the tunes played by string bands.

a useful intro, but it has problems

If you can't read music, this is great-- any idiot can read tab-- and it's a musical smorgasbord of Euro and N.American trad so you can learn a variety of things.

However, some of the arrangements (esp. for the non-improvisational genres, like Irish and Scottish) are way off. Bluegrass and country are open forms, where the musician improvises withon a framework, and the tunes are "outlines" of chord progressions. Irish and Socttish, ont he other hand, are closed forms, where the tunes are played straight up, no improv. You can go anywhere int eh world and hear irish trad an play along...and Brody's book has some of these arrangements wrong enough to jar the ear.

The Irish musician should get O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland if s/he wants to be serious; this book is useful, but only as an intro. And if you read music and don't want to bother with tab, get the fiddler's verion. Same tunes etc just written in standard notation.

nice, but not mandolin-specific at all

"The Mandolin Picker's Fakebook" contains a nice collection of pieces notated in tablature and it contains indeed an extensive discography.
However, the only things specific to mandolin seem to be: the tablature notation, a list of eight recordings which are of specific interest to mandolinists (half a page, while all the rest seems to be folk fiddle) and some extremely thin introductory material which seems to be mostly copy-and-paste from the same author's "Fiddler's Fakebook", no information on picking-technique at all etc. When copy-and-pasting, they didn't even bother to change the word "fiddling" into "picking" or similar.
All in all: a nice collection of tunes. Good discography. Just be aware of its limitations for mandolinists.

Excellent Book by Noad

This guitar book by Frederick Noad is good for both instruction and performance. The book is laid out in a logical, easy to follow manner. The musical pieces progress from simple to more complex as the book goes on. At the beginning of the book, Noad explains the ornaments and notation of the Baroque style in simple language. All of the pieces are written in modern notation with helpful explanations of the origin of the composition, guidelines for playing, and composer backgrounds. I've had this book for five years, and I still am enjoying it. It's wonderful resource. If you are a guitarist wanting to get into the Baroque style, this is the book!

A good resource for the classical guitarist.

Most every classical guitarist should own at least a couple of the famous Noad books. "The Baroque Guitar" is one of my favorites, because of the composers and materials chosen for the book, particularly the Bach and Sanz pieces. As another review stated, this book is good for both instruction and performance, as the pieces in it are certainly worthy for the stage, and the duets are a nice touch, too.

Any classical guitarist that goes through this book will definitely have a good knowledge of the great classical repertoire that is available, and to have it all in one book is a nice feature. Noad's books are always well organized, however I frequently do not agree with his provided fingerings, as there are other fingerings that would make more sense, but that is a minor issue. The tunes included make up for that. One of my absolute favorites to play is the beautiful Bach "Sarabande," originally written for violin, but reproduced here in accurate fashion. Other tunes to check out in the book are the Bach "Double," Sanz's "Canarios," and the featured duets for two-guitars.

Overall this is a great book and is highly recommended. The only thing I would suggest to the buyer is don't be afraid to figure out and try some alternate fingerings.

The Baroque Git-box

I purchased this at a book sale in downtown Ithaca recently and it is worth its weight in halibut. The descriptions that accompany the pieces are a resource that will make you perform the piece better. Quality is evident on every page, Noad did his homework and if you ever come across this book I recommend you buy it. Something in here for everyone, sight reading pieces, concert pieces, guitar duets, vocal/guitar arrangements, you name it I'll play it. Keep those nails in shape g's and gents.

A great resource and learning tool

I'm about half way through this book and am finding it very helpful and educational. (Note that I did not get the book through Amazon, but usually shop here, so I thought I'd post a review.)

The book presents 11 key arguments for and 10 key arguments against God and Christianity, so I'm learning a great deal about the different philosophies and worldviews involved.

Argument diagrams are new to me, so it took me a little time to "get" them. For my purposes, the diagrams have provided an overview of the key premises, objections and rebuttals for each conclusion (e.g. Christ rose from the dead).

Following the diagram, there's an explanation for each conclusion, premise, objection and rebuttal. I haven't found the need to bounce back and forth between the diagram and the explanatory text. For me, after getting the big picture diagram view, the explanations have been the most interesting and helpful to me.

I'm reading this on my own, but can also recommend it for group discussions and students. (Each chapter includes discussion questions and suggested assignments.)

I appreciate that it argues both sides. I am a Christian, but I hate when others have a confirmation bias towards their beliefs, Christian or not. This book gives both sides of the argument and makes it clear how to argue either side, and leaves it up to the reader to decide the truth.

Like reading a bus route map for a city you've never been to

Sorry, but I will have to declare myself one of those for whom visual diagrams are just confusing. Not so much the diagram itself, which you can follow the arrows.
But the pages explaining the arguments in paragraphs aren’t really useful unless you are going back and forth to the diagram. Even then you can get lost in whether you are following a path that leads to .there is no god’ or one the ends ’so God exists’.
Worse, the paragraph describing the symbol step along the way are way too short. You are almost better off just reading the page of symbols than the paragraphs as it is clearer and less confusing.

Spans a great career

Paul Simon is one of the worlds greatest musicians. This book shows a three decade career at it's best, the book includes a good number of the hits as well as the not so well known hits. The only bad thing I can think of to say about it is that it came out before Rythm of the Saints did so therefore it didn't have songs like the Cool Cool River, obvious Child, or Born at the Right Time. Overall for any musician who wants to be able to play the songs of one of the worlds greatest musicians, get this book
