Between Two Worlds

Between Two Worlds by LeAnne Hardy is about a girl named Cristina, a missionary kid (mk). Her family serves God in Brazil. She's trying to fit in. She loves Brazil, and can't let go. She thinks her family doesn't care about her.

I enjoyed this book because I can relate to her. My parents are missionaries to Eurasia. I can understand the hard times she went through. I enjoyed her character. She liked to have fun and to hang out with friends.

I believe that LeAnne Hardy is sending a message of faith. Faith in people, faith in God, and in yourself. We all go through hard times. The author probably wrote this because of hard times. She is a missionary. Her kids probably go through the same things. It does feel weird to be different. Growing up in one place, then moving to a different country is hard.

I recommend this book to anyone who needs a shoulder to lean on. Anyone who is desperate for God. Anyone who fels like crying for hours. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a little faith. Again faith in themselves, people and God. This book was touching. It was so good I couldn't put it down. I do believe it was good from beginning to end.

A book that shares the heart of Missonary Kids....

When I read this book I felt like re-lived some of my own transitions to the U.S. as a fellow Missionary Kid from Brazil. It spoke truth about both the joys and the frustrations that comes from being bi-cultural. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is an MK or cares about MKs and their lives. Enjoy!

Lister's view of the past is not rose-colored. She recalls an early advisor's suggestion that a woman marry an archaeologist if she wanted to pursue the profession. Pots - bones of civilization - and the lucky finders

Potsherds, it seems, are as important to archeologists as bones to anthropologists. They both last. They both tell part of the human story. Somewhat in the tradition of Osa Johnson's famous chronicle, *I Married Adventure* of the previous generation, Florence Lister takes the reader along with her family through five continents and many years in search of ceramics, ancient and colonial.
Florence and her husband Bob, both archeologists, with their two young sons in tow, pursued pothunting in such diverse places as Glen Canyon in the American Southwest before it was inundated by Lake Powell and the Aswan High Dam area in Africa before it also went underwater. From the 1940s to the 1990s, they did a great deal of contract archeology, i.e. investigating areas such as dams, highways, pipelines and the like that contain historical debris such as potsherds, bones, tools and tiles before they are swept away by modern civilization. The Listers contributed considerably to the body of knowledge about connections between pueblo Indians of the American Southwest and those of Mexico and Mesoamerica as well as trade routes that brought colonial pottery from Spain and Italy to the Americas. The hard science is made more lively and interesting by the personal details.
For example, the JFK assassination occurred when the family was in Wadi Halfa in Africa. Their Nubian servants insisted on sending a cable of condolences to Mrs. Kennedy, who had played an active role in the "Save the Monuments of Nubia" campaign. Near Escalante in Utah, they uncovered more evidence about the disappearance of Everett Ruess. They discovered dishes Cortez used and roofing erected by Columbus' party. They found Genoese pots in Spanish ports, investigated porcelain in Japan (at the "climbing kilns"), T'ang pottery in China, amphorae in Greece and, like detectives, discovered old paintings depicting pottery that had found its way from Seville in Spain to the Americas.
This book sort of grows on you. At the beginning, the language is a bit stilted and self-conscious, but after the author gets into the groove and finds her zone, you begin to participate in the exciting life the family led (not without some danger; they got mugged in Jamaica and got into another tight spot in Morocco).
If you're at all interested in archeology (incidentally, the American spelling is "archeology" and the British is "archaeology") you'll relish this account and remember both scientific conclusions and personal anecdotes. If you're not at all interested in the subject, you won't even be reading this review anyway. But for the former group of people, it's a good, informative, and exciting read.

CD only has 15 of the 200+ songs

I purchased this book hoping to learn what these classical pieces sounded like before attempting to learn them. There are over 200 songs in the book, I assumed a sound track for each ... lots of listening. Only 15 songs are recorded on the CD. The book is full of classical music which is no longer copyrighted ... I'm not sure if this is a gret deal or not. The book is laid out well and has a plastic comb binding for easy, durable use. Good buy if you want to have all the music it one place,do not buy it for the CD.

Greg MacGregor spent fifteen years on this project, photographing the traces of the mid-19th century Emigrant Trail, which saw some 500,000 Americans set out in covered wagons from starting points like Independence, Missouri, toward California and Oregon. The routes taken by these wagons were so fixed that there are indeed ghostly wheel ruts in the solid rock and faint but indelible marks of human struggle across the American deserts. MacGregor includes pictures of pioneer graveyards and views of sites long paved over, their history resonant only in the extant diaries of those who made the journey. Extracts from such diaries and anecdotes about the places in the photos make an excellent supplement to the photographic document.

Computers/Internet coverage a disappointment

This review will seem unnecessarily critical, but I want to do what I can to help churches avoid wasting money -- there are too many folks with no scruples about charging a church whatever they will pay. I do some pro bono computer consulting for my parish (Trinity, Lime Rock, CT), and bought this book in hopes it would get me current with specific uses churches were making of the Internet. Sad to say, the book's coverage of computers and the Internet was minimal. The chapter entitled "Computers -- An Effective Tool in Ministry" covered pages 203 - 210 inclusive -- out of a total of 287 pages. Of these seven pages, two were glossary. Although I did like one metaphor -- "E-mail is the FAX machine of the '90s" -- and will probably use it elsewhere in my practice -- there was little other information of use to me. I noted a piece of misinformation. On page 204, the average cost to have a web site hosted was identified as $100 - $150 per month. Last evening, while looking for web hosting for a commercial client of mine, I found at least 50 companies who would host a site of some sophistication for $10 or less per month. Indeed, I found very few that charged more than $75 per month! I also noted the description of the church with its own server and eight modems (each with a phone line) to accomodate an on-line prayer circle. While this may have been both innovative and cost-effective when set up, the same functionality (on-line conferencing) is available today via any of the "Instant Messenger" services on the Internet for FREE -- no server, no modem pool, only the Internet connection for each participant. To move away from defects, I suspect this book will be of much use to people involved otherwise in church communications. Even the short chapter on computers may be of some use in introducing a non-computer-literate rector or pastor to computers and the Internet in a non-threatening context. But be aware: computer/Internet costs can be FAR lower than the book suggests. And, if you're already computer-literate and looking for specifics on how to apply computers and the Internet to communications in your parish, you can safely drop the price of this book in the collection plate instead of buying the book.

Although this paperback has a modest price, its 300 pages add up to a valuable resource -- a pearl of great value -- for ministers, staff members, and other persons with varied leadership roles in local churches. The book shows how to develop an overall plan and provides ample examples of ways farsighted churches are communicating effectively with their members and ways they are reaching the unchurched. It gives solid advice on advertising, media relations, and use of websites, e-mail and other offspring of electronic technology. Contributing to the five-star quality of this book are its checklists and forms to keep track of progress.

Not my theology

Although this author presents several good ideas and helpful information, his theology is too different from mine for me to recommend this book. He differentiates between "the saved" and "the unsaved" in his ministry, and his church board does discipline reviews of members on certain issues. If your theology is like the author's, then this book will be okay for you. Otherwise, choose a different book on small church ministry.

Excellent motivation for studying piano after 40 year absence

About one year ago I purchased both volumes 1 and 2 of Library of Easy Piano Classics - they have been inspirational to me as a returning student of the piano. I studied for 10 years as a young adult, then dropped it for 40 years and decided to return a year ago at age 70. My fingers felt like lead, I could barely read music, and I almost gave up. With the help of my piano teacher, I am re-learning the piano and studying the usual exercises (Hanon, Czerny), but the best part is learning to read music again and practicing these beautiful classical pieces in an "easy", shorter format. These books inspire me to take on the original compositions. I am gaining speed and dexterity practicing the abbreviated easy versions of classical music - and believe me, they are not the usual kindergarten variety of "easy" - they do challenge me but they don't tire me out as I regain my skills. One year after resuming my lessons, I am playing original Chopin and Beethoven pieces, but I also study many pieces from these easy volumes as an adjunct to the more difficult original pieces - just for pure pleasure, enjoyable, and fun. I recommend both these books to beginners and those who are re-learning the piano - you and others will love to hear you play ; these books will motivate you to not give up as you build your skills and eventually take on original works. This set of books is for my piano teacher, at his request, who will use them for students of all ages.

Not for beginners, but simplified and diverse.

Easy is not entirely accurate, but certainly far easier than the unaltered version of classical piano pieces. Nice selections very diverse. I do wish there were more Chopin nocturnes. Probably suitable for a 2-5 year student, depending on skill and talent.

Library of not soo easy classics transcibed for piano

There are lots of nice music in this compilation, but in my opinion the title and descriptions is somewhat misleading.

First most pieces are not piano classics but all kind of classics, from opera to orchester works, transcibed for the piano. E.g. the pices by Beethoven includes themes from three of the symphonies. The emphasis is on well known classical themes and well known composers, not on pieces originally written for the piano. Most of the music is thus arrangements and not originally written in this form by the stated composer.

Neither did I find the pieces easy. This is of course a matter of skills. There are collections of classics easier than most of these, where all pieces are originals as written by the composer. To give an indication of the level required: Saties Gymnopedie no 1 is included in the volume, and it is not among the more difficult in this volume. It is definitely not for the beginner.

Personally I would have preferred more original piano work, not arrangements of orchestral works. I'd also like more of the easier pieces. On the other hand, there are lots of pretty pieces for a low price, hence the three stars.

Very small print

An excellent book, as most of Erwin Lutzer's books are. He writes beautifully--one of the very best Christian authors.
Unfortunately the print in this book is very small, and thus hard to read. It's small enough so it strains my eyes.
I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known the print would be so small.
