About the Author
John R. Cionca is the executive director of Ministry Transitions, Inc. He also holds the position of professor of ministry leadership at Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Cionca has served in full-time capacities as a youth pastor, minister of education and senior pastor. He has written four books, coauthored three books, and served as contributor and editor for two other books. He has ministered in many churches as an interim pastor and transitions coach. John is also a ministry spouse; his wife, Barbara, serves as a children's pastor in the Twin Cities.

Great resource whether you're moving or staying put.

This book was helpful on several levels:
-for the pastor questioning whether or not to leave a current ministry.
-for the pastor who is eager to make changes within his/her current ministry.
-for those who've recently arrived to a new ministry and need a healthy start.
-for those looking to assess their effectiveness in their current ministry.

A very practical guide for more than just "moving." In fact, it is worth reading well before you're considering a move.

If your in discernment process - a very good read

I especially liked the early chapters that try to guide you through the different aspects of discerning how things are going in your present situation and if it is time to move on. The "tests" to try to objectify the process were much too simply. The chapters recognized the complexity of these kinds of situations and really helped me think further about my situation. The second part of the book talks about different kinds of moves - into different kinds of ministries or even out of "paid" ministry. If you are in the middle of this discernment process then this book can really help to bring things into better focus.

I buy for all of my interns

I order this book and give it as a gift to all of my interns. I work as a youth pastor and was given this book in seminary. Despite the great education that I received while in seminary it was so helpful for me to have a book that walked me through the interview process, and I have found that many of my interns just don't know what questions they should be asking to figure out if they should say yes to a position, or just to give them insight into a church's dynamic and history. I can't say that I have moved at all in my position, so my evaluation is based on giving new pastors resources for thinking about when they might move. The way this book is written it is also very user friendly. "Practical" is the best way to describe it.

Dan Phillips (MDiv, Talbot Theological Seminary) has taught seminary and college classes in New Testament studies, Hebrew, and Old Testament theology. He has preached and presented seminars on Proverbs and the Sovereignty of God, written biblical newspaper columns and tracts, and hosted a radio talk show. With an ongoing conference and pulpit ministry, Dan is most broadly known for his writing on the Pyromaniacs blog, with Phil Johnson and Frank Turk (teampyro.blogspot.com), and at his own blog, Biblical Christianity (bibchr.blogspot.com). Dan pastors Copperfield Bible Church in Houston, Texas, where he lives with his amazing wife, Valerie. They have four children and five cats.

Genre-Tilting Book

Do you know someone who consistently talks in "Christianish" terms, but who you suspect doesn't actually know what it means to *be* a Christian?

Or someone who is sort of "floundering" spiritually, perhaps due to some fuzzy theology?

Or even a pastor, whose eyes are atwirl over the latest "thing" in church ministry?

Would you put *yourself* in one of these categories?

If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, this is a book you and your friends must read, and then discuss.

The World-Tilting Gospel is another book in the growing genre of books attempting to explain the orthodox Christian gospel for a new generation. Not Orthodox in the Greek or Russian sense, mind you. Phillips is an unashamed Reformed Evangelical Christian with an unusually broad pedigree. He holds an M.Div. from a namebrand evangelical seminary, and has held various positions in vocational ministry. But he currently works a "secular" job while writing regularly at several highly trafficked Christian blogs. His writing there attracts an eclectic variety of readers, both Christian and non-Christian, from a broad range of backgrounds

It's the combination of those two sets of credentials that makes Phillips' first book unique. Its structure is simple, pursuing answers to the four questions he argues must comprise a complete and Biblical worldview: Who Are We? What Has God Done For Us? How Do We Get In? How Do We Get Going? But the content is rich, and relentlessly "Bibley". Each chapter is replete with applicable texts in both contemporary translations and even his own translation of the original.

Phillips style is both winningly personal and pastoral. Phillips is not another nerdy theology geek trying to show off how much Hebrew he knows. He doesn't take himself seriously, but he really takes Jesus seriously, and he wants his readers to, also. There were many moments when I laughed out loud at his turns of phrases, others where I thought "Ouch, that'll leave a mark", and still others where I shed a tear as he fiercely and earnestly proclaimed the unique and, yes, world-tilting gospel of Jesus.

The book is not utterly flawless. Phillips' writing style is dense (in content, that is). Commas are his constant, necessary friends. They're absent in a few places, and that occasionally forced me to read sentences two or three times to get their full meaning. The editors also seem to be inordinately fond of underlining the chapter headings. Call m a pomo formatting nerd, but all the excessive underlining creates the impression that this might be a more sterile, scholarly treatise, which it certainly is not.

There's also a structural "quirk" in that Phillips waits until almost two thirds of the way into the book to lay out the critical role the Holy Spirit plays in regeneration, as well as in sanctification. Earlier in the book, he does an excellent job defining total depravity, but it's so convincing that when he beings talking about the kind of faith that really saves, you find yourself in that inevitable quandary about how a dead person can have that kind of faith. It's only later on, in the "How Do We Get Going", that those questions get answered. The chapter on the Holy Spirit is excellent. I just wish we'd had a little introduction to Him earlier.

Editorial quirks aside, this could be the work that all others in the "What is the Gospel" category will be measured against. Get it for your struggling pastor, your coworker with the fuzzy testimony, your brother with no testimony, and get it for yourself.

"The World-Tilting Gospel: Embracing a Biblical Worldview & Hanging on Tight" (Kindle edition) by Dan Phillips is a book worth reading. One does not need a PhD or MDiv to understand what the author is putting forth. Mr. Phillips backs up his writing with Scripture and encourages the reader to have his/her Bible near to hand to look up the passages for himself/herself.

Rather than being a dry, scholarly tome, this book is for both the lay Christian who wants a deeper understanding of the faith and for the "seeker" who wants to know what this "faith thing" is all about. Mr. Phillips lays it all out from the beginning of his book with "In the beginning..." and systematically demonstrates that saving faith begins and ends with Jesus. This book is also a handy tool for sharing the Gospel message for those of us who may not be quite so eloquent.

I will recommend this book to everyone I know.

Dan Phillips has written a witty, highly-readable and well-researched presentation of the Good News that turned the early church upside down and that is still guaranteed to upend today's world just the same. Recommended for all readers - from those who are new to Christianity through veteran faith warriors who want to bolster their faith and be encouraged.

About the book
Like primordial glue, the content of this book pulls together four essential Biblical truths that together answer life's most important questions: who we are, what God has done for us, how we may come to Him, and how we then live. This book is like a satisfying meal that sticks to your ribs and sends soul-lifting, truth-telling endorphins to your cranium. Totalling just over 300 pages in all, its weighty material is easily consumed in a few sittings by the average reader.

Who are we?
Following John Calvin's formula from The Institutes, Phillips begins with self-image and sets forth several examples of how holding wrong answers about who we are causes great damage in our lives. Through the examples of three specific faulty views, he show us how we need a whole-Bible view of ourselves, and not just a slice of scripture that supports our pre-conceived notions. He has creatively devised three characters that are representative of our typical false positions about man (which invariably lead to false views of God).

Phillips deftly deals with God's overarching plan of salvation in section two by beginning with a glimpse of the holy, covenantal God who has planned our ultimate "Rescue Operation". He then unfolds that great plan by showing how God's rescue mission is executed by sending Jesus Christ, who conquers our enemy for us.

How do we get in?
In Section three, Dan covers what he terms the "Two Towering Truths" of how God deals with our record of sin and our sinful nature. When we are saved God deals with our "record" through the atonement, which can only take place by God's power of regeneration -- a complete reorientation of our nature and will.

How do we get going?
In part four, Phillips tackles some difficult areas of application and practical theology. I thoroughly enjoyed this section of the book, especially the sections where he deals with understanding what the scripture means by "the flesh"; how the Christian's biggest problem isnt' external; and the critical role of the Holy Spirit in regeneration and sanctification.

In addition, he deals with some typical gospel errors, such as: misunderstandings of grace and obedience. He illustrates three faulty views of sanctification that are prevalent today by creating corresponding caricatures: the gutless gracers (who basically see Jesus as Lord as optional), crisis upgraders (who come up with quick fixes that don't exist), and muzzy mystics (who limply let go and Christ do the living).

This is probably a good time to mention the only thing that I would consider a possible negative about the book. While I am in agreement with the author's content and assessment of the prevalent faulty views, I am concerned that other readers who may have been persuaded by his work may instead be put off by these negative labels. "Gutless Gracers", "Crisis Upgraders", and "Muzzy Mystics" are colorful descriptions that could do as much to alienate the reader as they do to help portray particular views of sanctification. What is perhaps worse from my perspective is when Phillips actually ascribes names to the faulty views in part one of the book: Bud Goodheart, Lodo Legup, and Misty Call. Personally, I don't mind the use of this device. I'm just concerned that non-Calvinists might see the labels and names as too divisive. (Back to the rest of the review).

Chapter 14, "Culmination" is not just a conclusion, a summary, or an effort to avoiding ending the book on an unfortunate chapter number "13". His culiminating section outlines nine ramifications of the world-tilting Gospel:
- God over everything,
- Sin is a universal massive factor,
- The world does not define its own significance,
- Meaning and fulfillment cannot be found within the world,
- What we see is not how God wanted it to be,
- We are being restored to our intended being through Christ,
- Jesus is the most important person in all history,
- We have been given everything we need for godly living in Christ through the cross, and
- God's provision for us in Christ allows us to live to His glory.

A lot of readers will want to jump right to the fourth part, which contains the application or "so what" portion of Phillips' book. Unfortunately, too many of us, myself included, see the doctrines of grace laid out in parts one through three as dessert or the icing on the cake, when in reality these doctrines are our sustenance. They are the engine the makes practical theology possible. Without the doctrines of grace (who we are, what God has done for us, and His plan for rescuing us), practical theology is impossible. And I am extremely grateful for Phillips' contribution in all four parts.

About the Author
Mary Joy Quinn, RN, MA, has been the Director of the Probate Court of San Francisco Superior Court since 1989. Prior to that, she served as a conservatorship investigator for 12 years. As director, she supervises probate court investigators and examiners and coordinates the activities of the Probate Department. Prior to joining the Probate Court, Ms. Quinn served as a public health nurse and as the director of a psychiatric day treatment center for older adults. Her education includes a BS in General Nursing from the University of Oregon and a MA in Psychology focusing on gerontology from the University of San Francisco.

She has contributed to other publications focusing on elder abuse and neglect, conservatorship and guardianship, undue influence, and remedies for elder abuse and neglect with the civil and criminal courts. She is currently coordinating a state grant that focuses on access to the courts for elders, especially those who have been abused. She is a member of the California Judicial Council Probate and Mental Health Advisory Committee and a commissioner with the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. She is also a board member of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

The majority of USCT regiments were made up of freed men who viewed the army as an escape from slavery and a chance to take up arms against their former masters. The men serving in the 5th USCT, however, were freemen who were raised in a northern state and saw serving in the army both as a way to gain equal rights under the law and as an opportunity to prove their worth as men.

Because historians have written little on this subject, many Americans believe that African Americans simply received their freedom with the Emancipation Proclamation. They know nothing about the struggles these courageous people endured to gain their independence. Now, by incorporating personal documents, letters, diaries, and official records, Eagles on Their Buttons sheds important new light on this unfamiliar aspect of the Civil War. Versalle Washington shows what caused the soldiers in the Fifth USCT to join their regiment, what sort of men they were, and how they fought and lived as African American soldiers under white officers. He discusses the regiment's service, addressing its role in the siege of Petersburg, the battle of Chapin's Farm, and the capture of Fort Fisher and the port of Wilmington. Washington also looks at what effects the soldiers' service had in terms of societal changes following the Civil War.

Execellent book

This is probably one of the most thourough and Biblical books ever written on this subject. Not many people today take time to study the typology of the tabernacle, but anyone who will study this will be immensly blessed. Those who prefer their own form of doctrine will not enjoy the study of types, as the study of types makes clear what the true form of doctrine is. I highly recommend this book to all who desire a more complete understanding of the word of God.

About the Author
Bob Grant is a member of the Austin-based trio the Bad Livers (who have recently signed a deal with Sugar Hill Records), and has also toured and recorded with Rounder recording artist Slaid Cleaves. He founded the Metropolitan Bluegrass Authority, an umbrella organization for bluegrass musicians, in New York City. When he's not touring with the Bad Livers, Bob lives in Manhattan where he plays with his band Drinkin' & Cheatin'. Bob is also a graduate of Boston's Berklee College of Music where he earned a B.F.A. in Film Score Composition; in addition, he is currently recording the soundtrack to the film, "The Newton Boys."

Rockin' Mandolin

I am an intermediate to advanced player but I think that this book would be a good addition to any mandolin player's library. The CD is especially helpful and although some of the rhythyms are a little awkward to pick up between the text and the CD one can learn quickly.
There is only weaknesses that found was that the CD could use some more narration. A brief description by the author up front of each section would help. A little more descriptions of how to apply each rhythym and where they work best would help as well.
Overall I highly recommend this book.
