About the Author

Irvin S. Schonfeld, PhD, is Professor of Psychology, City College of New York (CCNY) and Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). He is also Professor of Educational Psychology, CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of over 50 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles; his research has been published in a wide range of journals in psychology, psychiatry, education, research methodology, including American Psychologist, Journal of Social Behavior and Personality, Journal of Occupational Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Child Development, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Teaching and Teacher Education, Psychological Medicine, Journal of Trauma and Dissociation, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, and Organizational Research Methods. Dr. Shonfeld has received research grants from National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Centers for Disease Control (on the effects of job stress on teachers), and the National Institutes of Mental health (on families of suicidal adolescents). He is the Founding Editor of the Newsletter of the Society for Occupational Health Psychology. He regularly teaches courses in Occupational Health Psychology, the Psychology of Youth Violence, Child and Adolescent Development, Experimental Psychology, Statistics, and Research Methods at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Konstantin P. Cigularov, PhD is Assistant Professor, Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Occupational Health Psychology, Old Dominion University (ODU), Virginia. He has published his research in such peer-reviewed journals asJournal of Safety Research, Accident Analysis and Prevention, Work & Stress, Journal of Business and Psychology, Psychological Services, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior. I have always loved this book. It has pieces for beginners up to early advanced players. My favorites are Chopin's waltzes and June Barcarolle by Tsaichovsky. Good for leisurely playing, and for some challenging pieces. No modern pieces here, though.

This collection sounds a lot easier than it really is. If you can really play the pieces in it, you're probably not a "student" anymore.

Since the terms "easy" and "difficult," when applied to piano literature, are recklessly applied to widely disparate material, the only objective anchor I can give you is this: Do you know the Alfred's Adult Piano course? These are fabulous..how to apply Christian principles to ordinary life situations. Don't expect flowery, pie in the sky, rhetoric...this is a "mean & potato" Gospel preacher/farmer; who tells it like the Gospel truth, that it is. He sticks to "The Word" and doesn't apologize for it. He's not some hard-hearted fella, who's never admitted to needing God's help..he's a real guy, who had trouble with his temper, relationships and over-all behavior; before being transformed, by God's Grace, at a revival meeting and has spent his life, learning and living the Biblical principles, in real-life applications, ever since. Both, the men and the women, I've sent these to, have enjoyed them. Gives men some actual guidelines, on how to become "real men", who aren't bullies; but command respect from everyone of all ages. What's not to like about that?

Great stories that truly show the bi-cultural perspective

In Iguana Killer there are several stories of young boys and the growing up they have to do usually without too much financial security and the constant challenges that they meet in a bilingual as well as a bi-cultural setting. Rios has a gift for interpreting what goes on in young boys minds, and the stories themselves make for very good reading.

A Much-Needed Comparison

Evangelical Christianity's fascination with eschatology shows no signs of waning in the near future. Major political and social events continue to fuel the interest in "end-times" speculation, whether the Persian Gulf War, 9/11, or the war in Iraq. A significant indicator of evangelicalism's interest in eschatology is the infamous "Left Behind" series of books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. This series of books has become something of a phenomenon in the publishing industry, and their popularity has not been limited to the evangelical world.
Through this series LaHaye and Jenkins have helped popularize an interpretive theological system known as Dispensational, and an eschatology of Pretribulationism. This eschatological framework undergirds the fictional story of the books, and may represent the "end-times" views of a majority of conservative evangelicals. Indeed, many of them have never heard of any other option, and those that have may likely consider other eschatological options as heresy!
_The Tribulation: Past or Future?_ provides a helpful introduction to another view of eschatology known as preterism or moderate preterism. Kenneth Gentry presents and defends the view that the events described by Christ in Matthew 24 are an example of fulfilled prophecy through the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Gentry looks carefully at the internal evidence of this text (and others) in an attempt to practice genuine hermeneutics rather than forcing a particular interpretive scheme upon the text. Ice presents and defends the futurist view, particularly Dispensational Pretribulationism, arguing that the events described in the Olivet Discourse are yet future and unfulfilled. The format of the book is a back and forth presentation and response by the authors that allows them to both build the strongest case for their views, and to respond to common criticisms.
Written on a popular level, the reader need not have any formal theological training prior to engaging the text. Even so, this book can also serve as an introductory textbook in systematic theology at Bible colleges. Readers will find this book a helpful resource that provides food for thought in today's popular "end-times" speculation. Those who enjoy this volume will also benefit from a review of Gary DeMar's _Last Day's Madness_ (American Vision, 1997), as well as R.C. Sproul's _The Last Days According to Jesus_ (Baker, 1998).

A Remembrance of Things Past

The recent flurry of books containing debates in print is welcome, and refreshing. Nothing gives the reader a better introduction to a controversial subject than two scholars hashing it out under one cover. With the phenomenal success of the Jerry Jenkins/ Tim LaHaye prophecy novels, a layman-friendly defense of preterism is long overdue. (Preterism is the belief that much--NOT ALL--of Matthew 24 and the book of Revelation was fulfilled in AD 70.) Dr. Kenneth Gentry is one of the most eloquent and intelligent proponents of preterism currently publishing. Dr. Tommy Ice is a well-known dispensational author and speaker. Dr. Gentry carefully and persuasively makes a water tight case for preterism, leaving Dr. Ice to melt in a puddle of twisted Scripture, illogic, and unfounded supposition. Dispensational theology, with its harmful hermenutic and execrable eschatology, has dominated the thinking of the church for far too long. If you want to see why Hal Lindsey and company are constantly scrambling for credibility, read the first half of this book (Dr. Gentry's contribution.) If you still aren't convinced that LaHaye and Jenkins are publishing gross error, you weren't paying attention.

An excellent presentation of the subject

Regardless of your current thoughts on the subject, this book will help you tie together any loose ends. It represents a very clear and easily-readable presentation of two opposite views of eschatology: futurism (dispensationalism) and preterism.

Like most evangelical Christians today, I grew up learning and teaching dispensationalism. Many studies in Daniel meant I had the images and calculations down pat. However, there was a nagging doubt involved in stretching the 70th week out for over two thousand years. Suddenly -- and recently -- everything is falling into place.

If you are unfamiliar with any other view of the end times, do yourself a favour and get a copy of this book. Both sides are very clearly presented. Read them and make up your own mind.

Excellent value

This is a great collection of Renessanse pieces.

I am an intermediate guitar player (say, five years of playing) and the easy pieces are just immediately playable, intermediate are "browsable" (e.g. I can easily walk through them to get the idea) but would require a week or two to play smoothly, and "advanced" are hard, yet doable (I could probably take one as a 3-8 months project).

For a beginner it might be a good book as well, just make sure you're familiar with music notation already. This is a nice collection of pieces with fairly thoughtful fingering and advices about difficult parts. This is not a self-help guitar/music text book, and it doesn't have tabs (I am so happy about that, tabs would probably make it twice thicker).

Fingering is very good, and very thorough, sometimes with thorough right hand fingering. I disagree with fingering in some cases, but in any case, the proposed variant is at least "very good" if not "excellent".

RE CD. I am a little bit disappointment, CD alone would get maybe "3 star". It's OK to illustrate pieces, it's done by a professional guitarist, but it's definitely far away from a "world-class concert level performance". E.g. the last few lines in Mudarra's Fantasia where bass line is main melody and upper voice is accompaniment: bass line is not emphasized (it's quieter than the accompaniment) and it's not at all smooth.

Another of the Great Frederick Noad Titles

As far as guitar sheet music/song books go, Frederick Noad was and is a name to be trusted. This collection is no different from his others. A first rate compilation. I rarely have problems with his fingering suggestions. The selections are top notch and always include a few surprises! Mr. Noad was truly one of the finest classical guitar teachers of the 20th century (and a top flight guitarist to boot). His legacy lives on in his songbooks. I own everything he published and recommend him most highly to beginner, intermediate and advanced students alike.

Variety and value

I see that everyone else has covered the ground pretty well, so I'll just add two things:

Firstly, that I agree with the reviewer who thought that the pieces should be arranged for 3rd string to F# (as in Nº 52), to simulate lute-tuning: using normal tuning just creates problems for yourself, in all but a few cases¹. Still, the fingering is generally easy enough to change, so it's still a good book.

Awesome book for those wanted to clear away evangelism folklore

There are human additions to evangelism which have accumulated over the centuries which are not Biblical. Mostly they tend to be works based which being saved is clearly not. Good read for folks involved in evangelism. This includes all Christians!
