Better Books Out There

This will help you learn how to sing. It contains info on how to breathe, how to sing vowels clearly, etc. But the info it gives are all too short, sometimes only half a page on a subject.

I'd suggest Singing for Dummies instead. It has a lot more information, lots more details, lots and lots more practice and it also comes with a CD that will warm-up your vocal cords and make it stronger.

Why am I giving this book 2 stars instead of just 1? Because at least it contains some sheet music, like Scarborough Fair, etc.

If you do get the other book instead of this one, you can always purchase your own sheet music The Best Broadway Songs Ever (The Best Ever Series).

Learn to Sing in Two Hours or Less!

YOU CAN SING is a book that packs a lot of basic instruction about singing into a wonderfully concise format. Anyone who can read will finish this book in two hours or less -- honest! It has just enough text to do the job. By the end of those two hours you will know your personal range, how to enunciate vowels and consonants for best effect, and how to put expression into your voice. You'll also learn about breath control, posture, and warmup exercises.
The text is supported by the included CD. The focus here is on pop, country, jazz, or theater singing rather than classical. As one who had private voice lessons in college and recorded two albums, I can testify that you can learn all the basics from YOU CAN SING. I find it a handy reference even now.

GREAT BOOK FOR VOCAL STRENGTH AND STYLES

This is a terrific book. The exercises provided with the CD will quickly build one's vocal strength. I started to notice a big difference in 2 weeks only. The exercises are a lot of fun and I no longer tire out anywhere near as quickly as I used to. Mr. Stone is an engaging author, and his book is informative about different singing styles. For people who want to do musical theater, he explaings "belting" in a way that will avoid harming one's voice. He also gives good information about singing falsetto. Overall, Mr. Stone's method combines intelligence and fun and will be of great benefit to anyone who uses it.

A Powerful Revision of Amerindian/Xicana Women's History!

Massacre of the Dreamers is Ana Castillo's transdisciplinary book about the deconstruction of Mexic pallocentric "pyramids," as she herself puts it. By re(w)riting history, Castillo reconfigures the role of the Amerindian/Xicana/Mexican woman, allowing her to draw strength from Mesoamerican female goddesses. In this remarkable text, furthermore, Castillo employs her "own raw materials" (104) as an antidote to male-centered cosmic consciousness that operates in binary frames of dualisms, dichotomies, and schisms. In resurecting her spiritual mother goddesses, Castillo, like Anzaldua and Cisneros, reinserts "the forsaken feminine into our consciousness" (12). By exposing the manner in which the xicana has been "gagged" for hundreds of years, Castillo rejects colonization and mapps a xicana history with a difference that allows the Amerindian woman's various selves to coexist simultaneously, reinforcing her identity

Ana Castillo is an inspiration/orguyo to all Latin women. A role model for the latin women, who still fined them selves confined to their social imprisionment and traditional impairment. In this book, Ana Castillo through a collection of essays touches on a wide range of controversial issues, which many Latinas-surprisingly-will fined they relate.Castillo writes on topics; such as, Machismo, a women's sexuality and lesbianism. Castillo also writes about her experiences and struggles with society's exceptances in the oppression of the Latin women. Trough her struggles, she stays true to her values and never conforms to social pressures.Castillo a true woman in every senses of the word, resilient, bountiful, and amorous. There is no doubt in my mind the Castillo intended this book to give voice, strength, and hope through her words of inspiration and examples of triumph. To those women not yet free, because of their social and religious imprissonment to submission.I recommend this book to any women who wishes to be enlightened, inspired and empowered by Ana Castillo's ideology.

Xicanisma (pronouned Chi-canisma)

It would be impossible to tell what this book did for me, especially during my days in law school. As a Chicana I felt isolated. I was often made to feel intellectually inferior. Castillo's brilliance soared like a flame to rescue my quickly freezing soul. If it weren't for this book I think I would have not survived that alienating environment bound to make me fail. She is not rhetorical but driven with reasoning. When women of color explain themselves we are dismissed as simply bitter. This book explained why I would have the right to be bitter and anger but why I must push forward. It saved my life.

Very helpful

I'm a bit mystified by previous low reviews and their take on the message of the book. As someone who is tackling the safety and security issues in my own church, I found this book to be extremely helpful in writing policy and establishing safeguards. Sadly, the author is quite correct when illustrating the often head in the sand attitudes of church staffs/boards today. If you are someone attempting to protect the children in your church, I would highly recommend this book. To clarify legal questions, I would advise as I will do, either talking to the district attorney's office or your church's legal counsel.

Church Pedophile Protection!

I dare say your church has insurance for fire, flooding, theft, and a host of other things, but I dare say you don't have insurance for reputation! I don't think you could find some if you wanted. I know if you will put into practice the steps in this book you will have the best insurance again'st loss of reputation, because of a pedophile there is.

This is an EXCELLENT book that NO PASTOR OR CHURCH SHOULD BE WITHOUT. Attorney Glover is a highly experienced and successful Christian attorney who has a long and admirable history of calling out Fundamentalist Christian leaders on their known sexual abuses & philanderings. Unquestionably, some of these Fundamentalist miscreants have sought revenge through some otherwise inexplicable negative reviews of a phenomenal and invaluable text in an age of rampant ecclesiastical abuse that they continue to deny and even condone through their debased religious brand of man-centered hero worship. Very clear for the beginner. An absolute must when just setting out with a new instrument is the music book with the beginner's palate! Very helpful in taking the mystery out of the mandolin for me!

Not for absolute beginners

I hope no absolute beginner tries to use this book. I'd call myself an advanced beginner, and this book seems pointlessly difficult. The photos aren't particularly helpful, and unlike in most other beginner mandolin books I've used, there's not a progression of skills. The variations on scales were interesting, and I picked up a tip about picking I hadn't encountered elsewhere, but this is not a book for an absolute beginner.

Beautiful Music on the Fly

Easily 5 stars, this book is an unregrettable buy for students and teachers (especially) alike. However, it should be noted that books like this are dangerous because they can catch you in a loop of non-progression. Because the pieces are of the beginning levels and because the volume is so vast one can easily cease to challenge themselves progressively. Do not think of this book as a substitute for learning complex pieces but instead as a recipe book for beautiful music on the fly. Even for the well learned pianist it is invaluable for being able to produce enjoyable music for yourself and others without intense study. Still, I certainly recommend not allowing it to replace Anna's Notebook or the Well Tempered Clavier. Remember, transcriptions to a single instrument will not be as complex as an entire orchestra anyway, so there is no shame in using this volume- just so long as you don't limit yourself to it! That said, I have to also say that the composition has been well thought. Fingering is provided. And perhaps most importantly the library is vast, varied and popular- Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, Joplin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky are only a most popular fraction of this volume and are provided at an unbeatable price. Also, thankfully, the book is plastic comb bound so the pages will stay open at the piano and can be easily laid flat for scanning and are removable.

Great for the price

This is a 350+ page book containing a lot of beaultiful songs. Although the arrangement isn't exactly the "easiest", many of them can be managed by beginners.

And it's spiral bound, making it so easy to use!

I've been playing piano for only 1 year, and I can play many of the pieces in the book. There are alot of familiar classics, and many unfamilair ones that are easy enough, and enjoyable enough to figure out.

everything you need to know - except the songs

This book is good if you just want to learn basic little guitar tricks, which are easy enough to learn for anyone with half an ear for music. You don't need this book for that, though, even though that's about all this book could possibly offer. Maybe it's my own musical ignorance, but I was only vaguely familiar with about 4 songs of the 20 here. Isn't this book supposed to be for beginners? . . . If you don't have a guitar teacher to play them for you, then prepared to be lost. This book is almost completely useless to me because I have no idea what most of these songs are supposed to sound like or how they're sung (and I don't particularly want to bother with reading from the scale for my voice). I'm not a complainer, but I thought a word of caution was necessary for this particular book. I bought it because it was Amazon's top ranking bluegrass book, but don't make the same mistake I did. Hold out until you find one that comes with a CD.

Start soloing in no time

Even the absolute beginner can start using this book and learn how to solo. This method is so user friendly and easy to understand. You start out learning each scale or arpeggio by playing it with whole notes over the backing track on the CD. From there you move on to half, quarter, and eighth notes. As you learn each scale you're reinforcing your technique. After you get your chops going and patterns memorized you learn how to play over changes and then eventually over a 12-bar progression. Also includes sections on turnarounds and how to create a solo. At the end you get to play 5 cool blues solos using the techniques that you've been practicing.

This book/CD method is fun and easy and perfect for anyone new to blues playing.

Not of any use

The print is too small to use the book as a tool to practice with. The examples are extremely simple but it would be hard for the average person to memorize them, then play them. I did not open the included CD because my immediate response was to return the book.
Had the print been large enough to read from a few feet away allowing the student to hold a guitar and play along, it would have been a great book.

About the Author
H.A. Ironside (1876-1951) was an internationally acclaimed Bible teacher and preacher, as well as the author of more than sixty books. His writings include addresses or commentaries on the entire New Testament, all of the Old Testament prophetic books, and a great many volumes on other biblical topics. For eighteen of his fifty years of ministry, Dr. Ironside was pastor of the historic Moody Memorial Church in Chicago, Ill.
