In Methodists and the Crucible of Race, 1930–1975, Peter C. Murray contributes to the history of American Christianity and the Civil Rights movement by examining a national institution—the Methodist Church (after 1968 the United Methodist Church)—and how it dealt with the racial conflict centered in the South. Murray begins his study by tracing American Methodism from its beginnings to the secession of many African Americans from the church and the establishment of separate northern and southern denominations in the nineteenth century. He then details the reconciliation and compromise of many of these segments in 1939 that led to the unification of the church. This compromise created the racially segregated church that Methodists struggled to eliminate over the next thirty years.

During the Civil Rights movement, American churches confronted issues of racism that they had previously ignored. No church experienced this confrontation more sharply than the Methodist Church. When Methodists reunited their northern and southern halves in 1939, their new church constitution created a segregated church structure that posed significant issues for Methodists during the Civil Rights movement.

Of the six jurisdictional conferences that made up the Methodist Church, only one was not based on a geographic region: the Central Jurisdiction, a separate conference for “all Negro annual conferences.” This Jim Crow arrangement humiliated African American Methodists and embarrassed their liberal white allies within the church. The Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision awakened many white Methodists from their complacent belief that the church could conform to the norms of the South without consequences among its national membership.

Murray places the struggle of the Methodist Church within the broader context of the history of race relations in the United States. He shows how the effort to destroy the barriers in the church were mirrored in the work being done by society to end segregation. Immensely readable and free of jargon, Methodists and the Crucible of Race, 1930–1975, will be of interest to a broad audience, including those interested in the Civil Rights movement and American church history.

Essential history for Methodists

This excellent book is about the the long and difficult battle to do away with the Central Jurisdiction in order to integrate the Methodist Church, at least at the regional and national levels. The Central Jurisdiction had been established in 1939 when northern and southern Methodism --split in 1844 over slavery-- were reunited. It was an organizational and structural device designed to keep the Methodist Church segregated, so that no white pastor would be under the authority of an African-American bishop and so that no white church would be assigned an African-American pastor. Once established, the Central Jurisdiction was almost impossible to do away with, even when the larger society was rapidly moving beyond Jim Crow.

The book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the United Methodist Church and for those who are interested in the history of racial integration in the US.

Shooting Polaris

A very sensitive and intelligent writer, Hales painted an honest and compelling story of an important time in history for a young college student. His description of his work, the land, and his discovery of self cause a reader to reflect on experiences that lead to finding meaningful life work. I recommend the book.

A young man struggles to find direction.

I was given this book as a gift from my wish list. I placed the book on the list for several reasons. I heard the author read from it at a surveying convention at my alma mater, CSUF. I was once a practicing surveyor. I have taught a course in celestial observations to college level, surveying students. And, like the author, I left surveying after obtaining an advance degree in another field.

I recall my own struggle with identity and a life's path as a young man. I thought the story of his struggles was well told. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Southern Agrarian finds sympathetic contemporary

Mark Royden Winchell, the leading scholar of the Southern Agrarians of his generation, studied under the last of the Agrarians at Vanderbilt, and was thus perfectly suited to prepare this outstanding bio. Sadly, Winchell died on May 8, 2008 at the young age of 59. This work will stand as a testament.

A fine biography; a necessary rescue

The lack of attention Donald Davidson has received since his death is scandalous. No doubt it stems in part from his racicialist views and resistance to the civil rights movement. Well Davidson was a flawed man--but to call him a "Racist" ( His old friend Robert Penn Warren's daughter says that his name was never spoken in their house on that account--I find it hard to believe) is simply to miss the measure of the man. He was a fine poet (just a notch below Robert Penn Warren and John Crowe Ransom) and a brilliant literary critic and teacher. His "Attack on Leviathan" is essential reading for those who confuse conservatism with Newt Gingrich, and his poem "Lee in the Mountains" is a tribute not only to a lost cause, but to all lost causes, and should therefore resonate with all but the incurable narcissist. Winchell has done us a great service by presenting the man warts and allto us. If we ever get beyond the name calling that passes for political and literary judgement these days it will be due in large measure to books like this one.

A fine writer on a fine man

This is a superb biography. Mark Royden Winchell's admiration for Davidson is clear, but it does not lead him to overestimate Davidson's achievements or gloss over his faults. The book, based on painstaking but lightly worn research, is just the right length, and the text, written in economical, elegant prose of which its subject would doubtless have approved, is complemented by sixteen pages of valuable photographs.

Winchell furthers our understanding of a fascinating part of America's recent literary and social history. But he also gives us a sensitive portrait of a man possessed of the kind of dignity that, like much that Davidson loved, has largely disappeared from most of our world -- but which, thanks in part to Donald Davidson, survives and prospers among the inheritors of the Southern Agrarian tradition.

An excellent method for clarinet students

I teach private lessons on clarinet and saxophone, and for the past ten years I have been using A New Tune A Day books for both my clarinet and saxophone students. These books are really excellent. They provide very clear instruction and good music, and a well made accompaniment CD as well. I used to use the Rubank Elementary Method for my students in their first two years, but now I use this one (book 1 followed by book 2) and am very pleased with it.

Excellent Beginners Book

My daughter has been using this book this summer to learn clarinet so she can join the school band in the fall and it's working out very well in combination with the Rubank Elementary Method. The other kids already have a year under their belts, so she needs to catch up to them over the summer. This book is great because it gets the students playing familiar tunes right away, and it appears to be well paced for a student working with a private instructor. The play-along CD has demonstration tracks so the student can hear what a good clarinet tone sounds like, as well as background tracks that the student can play alone on. Duet pieces are also included so the student can play with the CD or a teacher. The one thing the book doesn't have much of is basic technical exercises for scales, rhythms, etc. That's ok because the approach of this book is to learn by playing tunes. The Rubank book complements this book well because it provides the other piece that this book doesn't have. Students often don't care for the beginner Rubank books because they are dry and don't include many familiar tunes. But using these two books in combination offers the best of both worlds so students can build both their technique and their musicianship.

I usually teach advanced saxophone students, so I had to do some research into which books might help get a beginner clarinet player up to speed quickly. I've found that the band method books most of the schools use aren't well-suited for private lessons. However, if you have a student who is getting the basic technique from the school band method book and school lessons, New Tune a Day is still a great supplement if you have a child who loves the instrument and wants to play other things.

Excellent instruction!

I purchased the clarinet book, Saxophone 1 and 2, and the Performance piece book for Saxophone. Each book comes with a CD. I'm not as impressed with the CD as a parent because the musician plays quicker and not necessarily the same notes that are within the book. However, my child enjoyed playing along with the songs on the CD. It gave her the feeling of being at a concert. My daughter was already experienced when she went to her new school and the band teacher had to adjust what to teach her. Instead of using a book that was set up for another school that appeared to have songs that weren't challenging or fun, she chose to use these series of books to teach her. The teacher was very impressed with the entire set. A few minor errors were in the books but she said they weren't a big deal. My daughter then moved up into a different grade and had these books still in her bag. The new teacher at the new school saw these books and loved them so much that he's considering the idea of using them for the entire school band next year. This is a great testament to the written content and music that's included. I would definitely recommend this to anyone learning an instrument.

About the Author
Doris Gazda is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Penn State University. She played violin professionally with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and as a free-lance musician in the Washington, D.C. area. She also taught strings for many years in the public schools of Montgomery County, MD and most recently served as a Faculty Associate at Arizona State University, where she taught string methods classes.
