A great collection of background stories...

I'm a big fan of stories behind songs, but most books that seem to be out there only deal with the older hymns and not stuff that has been written in the past few decades. Thus I'm greatly pleased that someone took the time to collect this information before it became lost, for often the background of a song helps augment our appreciation to a higher level. Well written, small chapters help to encourage one's faith in God, almost like a devotional and, if you love singing like I do, will make you want to sing the songs anew after reading their back story.

This is a good reference book. I don't think it's much beyond that since you'll have to look elsewhere for the actual music. You do get the words and chords for the songs.

great little folkin' book

this is very good book to have around for players of all levels, provides chord charts and lyrics to a ton of popular folk songs. It is small in size , perfect for travelin'. My only complaint is the book is hard to keep open and play a guitar at the same time...wish it was bound another way

Toxic things & public policy

Chuck McCutcheon is an old classmate of mine, but I have to say that I found this to be a fine work. His book is direct and forceful in presenting the lengthy story of the creation of a facility to house radioactive waste. The author almost never bogs down in the technical or mundane even as the people he is writing about are doing exactly that. There's a lot to be learned from this book, namely, how Americans deal with periodic reminders that the unpleasant (or, in this case, deadly) byproducts of our military and technical might need to be dealt with, someway, somehow, somewhere.

One of my favorite books to share with my kids

This is just a great book to help you share your Christian faith with your children or other young people. The book shows a school-age boy named Erik who actively prays in different ways every day. Erik prays for his friend when she falls and skins her knee, he prays for the boys in his class who make fun of the teacher, he prays for guidance when his friend's dad loses his job, he prays for help when his friend's parents get a divorce, etc. The text also explains that you can pray in different ways: with your eyes closed or open, for yourself or others, etc. The illustrations in this book are wonderful, and my children are always taken with the emotion that is shown in each scene. Plus, Erik has a pet friend that you can look to find on each page. The text is easy to to follow and not so long that younger children would get bored. We read this book about once a week, and my children have easily picked up on Erik's prayer habits. Often, instead of getting angry with someone, they will ask me to help them pray for their friend, or pray for themselves to calm down. How wonderful! I love to give this book as a gift. Probably age-appropriate from 3-10 years old.

If she could have saved the last page for an older audience

I absolutely love this book. I have used it a few times even with kids up to 11 years old for its simple examples. It starts the conversation on what prayer is, who it is for and how do we do it. The only draw back is on the last page.
"I thank God for all my friends every day. I tell Jesus I want them to ask him into their hearts. I think that's the most important thing I pray, bc accepting Jesus is the only way they can get into heaven. And I sure want them all to be there with me...even Todd."
Adults struggle with this idea and what it means...its simply not appropriate for young kids unless you want them to learn they are better than others or give them axiety about their friends going to hell.
Some are very comfortable with this idea however and this book will work for them. I just don't read that one part. We will get to it as they get older.

If you are looking for an excellent book on the Candomble Orixa Worship of Brazil, then this is the classic. The book as the title states is of the power of the Brazilian Priestesses of the orixas, also known as orisha. Mai De Santos, or Priestesses of Orixas are as powerful, and as highly respected as the Babalawos of the Ifa and Babalorichas of Lucumi. I highly recomend this to all Voodoo Mambos, Santeria Santeras, and all Woman of the world, who believe in the power of Woman.
From a man's point of view this is a brilliant and inspiring work, and should be read buy all who honor the Ancient African Gods.

This is one of the great classics of anthropology and Latin American studies. Largely ignored during the rush to make anthropology a science of culture, this is a description of Candomble and the women who led the spiritual life of Bahia in the thirties. Good to see that it is now available in this format.
