Corzine (D -NJ) signed a law requiring all new mothers to be educated and screened for postpartum depression. This law is the first of its kind in the country, but many states and federal advocates are proposing similar laws. The motivation for states and the federal government to adopt education and screening program is high and may soon be a federal mandate. But a major barrier to successful implementation of such programs is the lack of available resources to train healthcare professionals in this specialty.

is a Clinical Psychologist licensed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Dr. Menken developed a specialty in Maternal Mental Health and is the co-founder of The Pregnancy and Postpartum Resource Center at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in the department of Behavioral Medicine. She is an instructor in Clinical Psychology in the department of Psychiatry at Columbia University and an Assistant Professional Psychologist at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Menken serves Postpartum Support International as a current board member, the public relations chair, and she is their coordinator for New Jersey. Dr. Menken has a private practice in Montclair, New Jersey, where she treats women with disorders related to reproductive mental health.

A Must-Have for All PPD Providers!

Postpartum depression continues to splash the headlines with dramatic impact. The upside to this is that it significantly increases public awareness, which is always a good thing. The downside is that media exploitation often leads to the perpetuation of misinterpretations and misunderstandings, which can impede treatment and recovery.

Although the availability of PPD self-help books and moving personal accounts continues to expand, books that address issues crucial to healthcare professionals who treat postpartum women has been lacking. Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, a pioneer for support and legislation within the postpartum depression community for some time, and Alexis Menken, PhD, another great PPD authority, provide a solid foundation for a book that fills this critical gap in the literature. This is an excellent book. Mental health professionals, OB-GYNs, women's health nurses and others don't get near enough training on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Susan Dowd Stone's book provides the kind of research-based knowledge needed on order for healthcare professionals to provide the proper support to women who may be going through antepartum depression, postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis and related illnesses.

About the Author
H.A. Ironside (1876-1951) was an internationally acclaimed Bible teacher and preacher, as well as the author of more than sixty books. His writings include addresses or commentaries on the entire New Testament, all of the Old Testament prophetic books, and a great many volumes on other biblical topics. For eighteen of his fifty years of ministry, Dr. Ironside was pastor of the historic Moody Memorial Church in Chicago, Ill.

This commentary was awesome! You will not be able to stop reading it, and then, you will have to read your Bible because it will help increase your knowledge of the Word of God a thousand fold! About the Author

Lenore E.A. Walker, EdD, ABPP , is Professor, Nova Southeastern University, Center for Psychological Studies, where she is also Coordinator of the Forensic Psychology Concentration in the doctoral program and Director of the Forensic Psychology M.S. Program. Additionally, Dr. Walker teaches in the Behavioral Science Track of the Criminal Justice Institute. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical and in Couples and Family Psychology. Dr. Walker pioneered the use of Battered Woman Syndrome in the criminal courts with women who killed their abusers and then adapted the self-defense data to civil and family court matters and broadened it to include impact from other gender violence issues. Author of 20 books and over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including three editions of the Battered Woman Syndrome, she has trained psychotherapists, forensic psychologists, lawyers, judges, and advocates in numerous countries around the world in assessment and intervention in gender and family violence. Dr. Walker has participated in the trials of several high publicity cases as an expert witness and consultant. Together with her students, she authored the evidence-based Survivor Therapy Empowerment Program (STEP) program, originally designed to work with battered women and now adapted for abused men and children.
