Rockin' Mandolin
By Han D.
I am an intermediate to advanced player but I think that this book would be a good addition to any mandolin player's library. The CD is especially helpful and although some of the rhythyms are a little awkward to pick up between the text and the CD one can learn quickly.
There is only weaknesses that found was that the CD could use some more narration. A brief description by the author up front of each section would help. A little more descriptions of how to apply each rhythym and where they work best would help as well.
Overall I highly recommend this book.

Aldo Leopold's Southwest, by Neil B. Carmony

First published in 1990 and now available only from University of New Mexico Press, this volume collects twenty-six of Aldo Leopold's little-known essays and articles published between 1915 and 1948. Leopold worked for the United States Forest Service in New Mexico and Arizona from 1909 to 1924. While employed as a forester in the Southwest, he developed his ecological ideas in articles written for newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and journals. Hitherto unavailable to the general public, these pieces show that Leopold was not born an ecologist. On a daily basis, the young forester grappled with concrete ecological problems and groped for practical solutions. He made mistakes and learned hard lessons from them. The sum of his experience is the ecological wisdom of his classic A Sand County Almanac, first published in 1949.

The volume editors have arranged this collection to show Leopold evolving from a naive forester to a mature professional and finally to a passionate environmental advocate. They follow each article with useful commentaries on its significance to the development of Leopold's philosophy.

Learning about Leopold
By John Alcock
This book provides an excellent chance to learn more about Aldo Leopold, one of the most important conservationists ever. The editors have assembled a highly instructive sample of Leopold's essays and articles written throughout his career. The essays provide insights into Leopold's development from a predator-destroying wildlife manager to world-class conservationist. The editors' introductory essays to sets of Leopold's writings are themselves first-rate. Brown and Carmony provide the reader with the historical context for understanding the significance of Leopold's essays as his career unfolded. Highly recommended.

Early thoughts from a master
By Daniel F. Styer
Aldo Leopold was a master in the science, practice, and philosophy of land conservation and appreciation. He grew up in Iowa, studied in New Jersey and Connecticut, but had his first lasting and significant encounter with wild nature in the Southwest of the United States. He went to Arizona before it became a state in the Union. The stories and lessons from his time there remained with him for his entire life. (As did his wife Estella, who also came from Arizona.) The most moving essays in his masterwork "Sand County Almanac" are set in Arizona and New Mexico.

The essays collected in this volume come from his early years in the Southwest rather than from his later reflections. They are full of enthusiasm and critical thinking, but they lack the splendid evocative writing of his mature style.

A special treat of this book are the brief notes on each essay by editors David Brown and Neil Carmony. In an essay, Leopold might make a certain deduction concerning some facet of land use. Brown and Carmony then remark on whether additional research has supported or overturned that deduction. Leopold might make a certain policy recommendation. Brown and Carmony tell whether the policy was adopted and whether it had the desired effect. The editors admirably resist the tug of hagiography, and give frank assessments of Leopold's shortcomings as well has his foresightedness.

I'll be straightforward: I loved this book. But I'm a Leopold fanatic -- I'd love anything he wrote. If you're not yet a fanatic, I recommend that you start with "Sand County Almanac", then move on to either "River of the Mother of God" or "For the Health of the Land". Once you're hooked, you'll enjoy this volume as much as I did.

A Commentary on Exodus (Kregel Exegetical Library), by Duane Garrett

A thorough exegetical and homiletical analysis of each passage of Exodus

The true fountainhead of Old Testament theology, Exodus illuminates the significance of the name Yahweh and introduces the title I AM. It tells of Israel’s formative historical event, the exodus, as well as the making of the covenant at Sinai. It includes the first code of the Law in the Decalogue and Book of the Covenant. It details Israel’s besetting sin in the idolatry of the golden calf episode, but it also describes Moses’s intercession and the great revelation of God’s mercy. In its display of the Tent of Meeting, it presents the theology of the priesthood, the sacrifices, and the central sanctuary. A Commentary on Exodus explores all of these events with a view toward their significance both for the meaning of the Old Testament and for the message of the Christian church. Exegetically deep enough to satisfy the scholar and logically organized to meet the needs of the pastor, Garrett’s commentary promises to become standard reference material in Exodus studies.

• Every verse is given a fresh translation with copious explanatory notes, and particular attention is given to the poetry of Exodus, which the author demonstrates to be more abundant than previously believed.

• The commentary also helps to dispel much confusion about Exodus by introducing the reader to Egyptian history and by carefully analyzing questions about the date of the exodus and the location of Mount Sinai.

The Best Conservative Commentary on Exodus
By Daniel Pandolph blogging at danielpandolph . com
A Review of "A Commentary on Exodus" by Duane A. Garrett
I'll admit I'm biased. Since I first encountered Kregel Exegetical Library's Old Testament commentary set, I have liked them a lot. I am also biased toward Duane A. Garrett who I think is one of the best conservative OT scholars alive. So when I heard that the two had teamed up to write a commentary on Exodus (one of my favorite OT books), I was hooked. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I am going to go make a very bold statement up front: I think that Duane Garrett's commentary on Exodus is the best available conservative commentary on Exodus right now.

Let's begin with the structure of the series. Each section of scripture is outlined in Hebrew with plenty of textual footnotes. Then, commentary is provided on the actual text. Finally, each section is recapped with a theological summary of the text. The typeset of the work is attractive and is altogether NOT like the WBC series which is a strain on the eyes.

On to the work itself. After an extended introduction (coming in at a whopping 150 pages), Garrett begins to dissect the text. I could cover a myriad of issues here but I will just give you one example where Garrett does a fine job with the text.

Exodus 4:18-26 is an extremely odd and baffling text. Why was God seeking to kill Moses? Why did Zipporah say, "You are my hatan damim?" There is unquestionably a lot going on here. Garrett devotes 12 pages to this issue. He (rightly) points out that the Hebrew does not specify that God was seeking to kill Moses but rather "him." He further points out that damim has nothing to do with murder but simply blood ritual in circumcision. To summarize, Garrett states, "We might, therefore, suggest the following reconstruction of the story behind this text. Moses and Zipporah set out for Egypt. Along the way, their son suddely became deathly ill. Zipporah recognized that the boy needed to be circumcised, and she did the act with a flint knife...After the removal of the foreskin, she ritually touched the boy's feet (or genitals) with her hand or the flint while saying, 'You are hatan damim to me' (a member of my community by virtue of the blood of circumcision." (pg. 230)

How one might apply this text in preaching is probably even more baffling. Thankfully, Garrett gives us a way forward in his theological summary section by connecting it to Christ (no weird typology here) and to spiritual wisdom and being a part of God's people. There is nothing forced here (I won't give away how he connects these ideas together) and it really does give us a beautiful picture of Jesus.

Overall, I cannot recommend this commentary enough. It is worth the price and is a fine commentary and the best conservative commentary on Exodus.

Another Great Addition to the Kregel Exegetical Library
By Chris Woznicki
I have worked my way through several of the Kregel Exegetical Library Commentaries in the past few months – this time I turn my attention to Duane Garrett’s commentary on Exodus. Garrett is a pretty well known scholar who teaches at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He specializes in OT interpretation and has written quite a bit on Hebrew grammar and historical background.

This commentary is aimed at pastors, though its not without its benefits for those who have a scholarly bent. He provides a verse by verse exegetical and theological study of this immensely significant book. As it is well known, Exodus serves as a major foundation for Old Testament (and New Testament) theology, perhaps it even serves a more significant role than even the call of Abraham or any other event in Genesis!

There are already several good commentaries on Exodus, so what makes this commentary stick out? First off, he spends a lot of time (though he calls it a short amount of time) giving the reader an introduction of Egyptian history, culture, language, and geography. Second he focuses on the state of scholarly arguments regarding historical questions. For instance, the dating of exodus, the genealogy of Moses, the location of the Red Sea, and the Location of Sinai. Third, he pays extra attention to the poetry found in Exodus. Fourth, he writes in such a way as to make this commentary useful for pastors and Bible teachers. This is especially evident in how he breaks up the commentary (Translation, Structure, Commentary, Theological Summary of Key Points). Finally, he writes this commentary from the position that Exodus is Christian literature. This might be controversial in some circles, but its part of our Christian canon, so it’s appropriate to read it that way.

I really appreciated the structure of the commentary section. The highlight for me was the Theological Summary of Key Points. As someone who preaches, I naturally gravitated towards these sections.

However this commentary is not without its drawbacks. He spends nearly 130 pages on historical background. Garrett concedes that most critical scholars tend to dismiss such historical issues as meaningless for the interpretation of Exodus. Now I don’t want to go that far, however I am a firm believer in the belief that our commentary should try to stick to the canonical form of the text and not get bogged down on issues behind the text. We should focus in on what God is saying through the words he has revealed to us, and not hang on the shifting sands of historical scholarship.

Despite, what I believe is an undue emphasis on behind the text issues, as opposed to textual issues, I found this commentary to be useful in helping me understand this significant biblical book. This book just confirmed for me that the Kregel Exegetical Library is a commentary set that is really worth collecting.

(Note: I received this commentary from the publisher in exchange for an impartial review.)

Excellent for Pastors and Teachers
By Armando Valdez
Exodus is fascinating and important in the narrative of the Bible. God revealed Himself and through it the Israelites knew sovereignty and majesty, in addition to the goodness and holiness of God. The Mosaic law is given by God to His people to legislate in order to live as a Theocratic people of God. Great stories in this book is known by children and adults. Teach and preach on this book can be fascinating yet challenging. And it's a blessing to have resources to help us study it. A Commentary On Exodus by Duane A. Garrett ( Professor of Old Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is a recent 750 pages publication by Kregel. This joins the other similar publications on Psalms, Judges and Ruth. A series that looks interesting.
A good commentary begins with a good introduction to present the overview and interpretive challenges of the book and its historical context. And this commentary has a 140-page introduction, which is a plus. The author shows in the introduction, information about Egyptian culture both language and geography. Basics such as authorship and date on which was written the book (very informative). The book is divided into 7 parts. PART I: Until Moses (1:1–2:10) PART II: An Unlikely Savior (2:11–7:7) PART III: The Twelve Miracles of the Exodus (7:8–15:21) PART IV: The Journey to God (15:22–19:25) PART V: The Sinai Covenant (20:1—24:11) PART VI: The Worship of God (24:12–31:18) PART VII: Sin And Restoration (32:1–40:38). The author analyzes the Hebrew text of Exodus in a exegetical way, making this book a true exegetical commentary; also providing a translation of the text by separating the prose with poetry and Hebrew sources; thus giving the reader a greater understanding of language. Copious notes footnotes are included, which I especially like not having to move to the end of the book for the notes. The author's knowledge of Hebrew, culture and exegesis, make it a very useful tool for the serious Bible student and pastors and teachers. If you have very little knowledge of Exodus, his background and message, this commentary can be of much help in understanding. I highly recommend it.
I received the book for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

At the End of the Santa Fe Trail, by Sister Blandina Segale

Originally published in 1932 and long unavailable, this memoir by a strong-willed and resourceful nun is a valuable addition to the story of women in the West. Sister Blandina (1850-1941) served in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico from 1872 to 1894 as a member of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. She possessed a singular determination to get things done, as in 1876 when she demolished a dilapidated building serving as a school. Having no funds to replace the structure, she declared, "Our assets are good-will and energy"--and her example inspired artisans to volunteer in building a new school.

Sister Blandina dedicated herself to teaching Hispanic children, tending the sick, visiting prisoners, assisting orphans, and raising money to further missionary activities among Hispanics and Native Americans. She quickly recognized the essential injustice of the settling of the West and observed that the Native Americans' "right to the land we call America is unquestioned."

The foreword by Marc Simmons includes a biographical sketch, and an afterword by Anne M. Butler addresses the historical contributions of nuns such as Sister Blandina.

History in the Making
By Arletta Dawdy
This book is a unique examination of Colorado and New Mexican history through the eyes, prejudices and religions beliefs of a dedicated Sister of Mercy. She knew many historical figures from Archbishop Lamy to Billy the Kid as she became an historic figure herself, building schools, medical care and musical programs with little in the way of money. Sister Blandina's twenty year journal of letters to her sister is filled with intriguing political maneuverings, tales of discrimination and exploitation of "natives," both Indian and Mexican, as well as her special gift of calling on the generosity of others. A rare and useful look at history in the making.

It's thrilling to read a first person account of early New Mexico and thank you for publishing it. On the down side, there are so many typos that it isn't possible that an English speaking/reading human proofread this book. This book was not "meticulously reviewed."

Great book about the courage of the early pioneers settling in the West. Sister Blandina was remarkable in her efforts to spread the word of God under very trying circumstances. It's no wonder that she is up for sainthood.

Odd system (not tablature) Spends lots of time telling you it's important to practice. leaves it to you to figure out what key accordion is used. mostly very simple but toward the end, when finally showing interesting adornos he switches to musical notation or tells you to use your ear. I gave up on the book and decided to go with "Aprende Ya!" series and Youtube

The "BIBLE" Of The Three-Row Diatonic Button Accordeon - EXCELLENT !!!!
By CapnJ
Any experienced Music Teacher (on any Instrument) can take one look at this series of three Books/CDs & see just how well these are thought out & written for the Student of the very complex 3-row Diatonic Button Accordeon. I am so impressed (the Diagrams are fantastic) with these books, in my opinion they are the very best out there. Because this particular "Old School" type of European Accordeon is not straightforwardly laid out like the "newer" "modern" Piano-Key Accordion which results in the same note sounding per key on both the push & the pull of the bellows (Unisonoric), the Diatonic Accordeon sounds a different note per button on both the push & pull (Bisonoric), therefore resulting in a much more complicated system - difficult to understand how it's laid out without such an excellent Instructional method as these three Books/CDs. The benifits of learning this type of Accordeon are great, as because of its special system, one can play many licks, phrases, etc. faster & much more obtainabe than on a regular Piano Accordion (in addiion to the many different Musical styles this little Accordeon is so well known for). The only reason for deducting one Star instead of giving all five is the recordings of the book's examples seem to be in "Midi"-sound & not that of an actual 3-row diatonic button Accordeon. However, it really doesn't matter as the recorded notes faithfully represent the book's content throughout. My great respect & regards to the Author of this outstanding Resource. Now, if I only knew how to read in Spanish LOL. However, because of this I guess I will finally be forced into learning & with my deep interest in this subject, I can stand to learn a lot about the Language as I go through these books.

An Indispensable History Of New France
By James Gallen
"The Canadian Frontier" is an excellent exposition of the story of the interface between Canadian and native civilizations from 1534-1760. As the Canadian frontier included much of the Midwest, this book is a good choice for both American and Canadian readers with an interest in the history of New France.
Prof. Eccles makes the point that the Canadian frontier is conceptionally different from the American frontier. The American frontier was a geographical concept, the line where settlement gave way to wilderness. The Canadian frontier, by contrast, was a series of settled islands in a sea of wilderness at which civilization "did business" with native cultures.

One test of a good historical book is whether it changes the reader's view of history. This one passes that test. I had always viewed the competition between the French, British and Indians in North America as being based on basic nationalistic and tribal rivalries. Prof. Eccles explains the rivalry in terms of an economic competition over the fur trade. The roles of the Indians was to supply the furs. The locations of the trade shifted over time between the eastern settlements, western trading posts and in Indian villages at which traders visited. Traders competed in goods offered, while tribes competed, at times by war, to control access to traders and their goods. Middleman profits were often at stake.

The economy of New France is contrasted with that of the British colonies. The economy of the British colonies was largely based on farming while the economy of New France was, primarily, extractive, based on the fur trade and, to a lesser extent, fishing. Farming in New France was, initially, merely to supply the settlers. As population increased and the fur trade declined, New France evolved from a trading to an agricultural colony.

The trading pattern of New France determined land use practices as well as relations with the Indian tribes. I had always thought of low populations of New France as a reflection of the unwillingness of the French to migrate to North America. From this book I learned that low population density was indispensable to a fur trade based economy.

Like the Spanish to the West, and unlike the English to the south, evangelization was a major part of the interaction on the Canadian Frontier. Much of the exploration and development was instituted or accompanied by missionaries.
Over time, the Canadian Frontier was changed by tribal wars which determined the access of each tribe to western traders and their wares. Although Indians are often portrayed as victims of white aggression, the truth is that they acquired a dependency on European goods which contributed to their own downfall.

The military aspects of the North American wars are interesting in that they relate the relative contributions of the Regular forces, the militia and the Indians. Another of my conceptions which was changed by this book was that the outcome of the French and Indian war was dictated by the colonial population imbalance. Prof. Eccles makes the case that the fighting qualities of the French militia made them dominant over the English militias and that it was only the skills of the British regulars against the bungling of the French regulars which won the war for Britain.

Ultimately, the world in which the Canadian Frontier arose and prospered changed and the Frontier disappeared. The French and Indian War restricted the numbers of voyagers to a handful. The vision of the French habitants changed from that of an open continent in which to trade for furs, to a river valley in which to farm and sell their produce. The leadership of the fur trade changed from French entrepreneurs to British businessmen. The British, who fought to wrest the Ohio Valley from the French, tried to close it to their own colonists. Ultimately, the colonials who fought to take the Ohio Valley from the French took it from the British with French aid. The Indians who had tried to play one power against the other, found that, in contributing to the downfall of the French regime, they had traded a benevolent, cooperative colonial power for one which would take their land and destroy their culture.

Professor Eccles has told the early history of much of our continent with insight and a skilled writing style. The supporting notes and bibliography guide the reader to sources for further research and reading. "The Canadian Frontier" is a must for anyone with an interest in the history of New France.

The Canadian Frontier
By Lisa Hendrickson
W. J. Eccles did a phenomenal job in covering the history of New France. I was expecting a dry history. I didn't get one. What I got was a story of men and a few women.
This book is a facinating account of the settlement of Canada under the French. For a history book, it was hard to put down. Eccles brought the problems of starting and maintaining a colony to life. He presents historical figures like Frontenac and La Salle as real people who made real mistakes without excuses or whitewashing.
I would recommend this book to anyone doing any type of research into New France.

French Canadian History
By R. St Mary
"The Canadian Frontier" is a good overview to French Canadian history. I got this because I was interested in what day-to-day life was like for my ancestors in Montreal in the late 1600s. It does a good job explaining what it was like... but can be a little dry at times. But, overall worth the read if you are interested in the subject.
