For obsessive fans only

This book's contents are so exhaustive, containing such a wealth of information, much of it rather insignificant in itself, that only the most obsessive of Dylan fans would ever buy it, much less slog through its voluminous contents. Needless to say, I bought it and did so. If you are truly interested in Bob Dylan, in a scholarly and historical sense, not just as a fan of his music, then you will serve yourself well by getting this book. If you are not, however... well, let's put this book into perspective:
What this book purports to be is a chronicle of Bob Dylan's life -- not an autobiography, but, rather, a listing of each day of his life, from the day of his birth up until the year this book was published (1997); as short pre-history is included, as well. Now, as you probably assumed, the book is not exactly this: Dylan is, and always has been, a mysterious, aloof, and reclusive character, despite his great fame. Consequently, long stretches, often encompassing months at a time, are missing from this chronicle. Still, what is here is amazing. Documented herein is a record of every recording session, rehearsal, and tour that Dylan had done up to this point. Heylin tells you what songs were played, how many times, what the arrangements were, if there were any changes from their original incarnation, what musicians played on them, etc. Also documented are most of Dylan's interviews -- where, with whom, and about what. These kinds of details form the vast majority of the book; needless to say, the more personal aspects of Dylan's life are as unknown to Heylin as they are to the rest of us, and probably always will be. Examples of the other kinds of information that he manages to include are such things as Dylan's travels, public appearances and events, and the like.
As one can see, this is not a book for the casual Bob Dylan fan. If you are looking for a biography, stay far, far away from this; Heylin's own Behind The Shades is a good place to start for that type of tome. On the other hand, if you are a Bob Dylan fan who is truly interested not only in the man's music and life, but in the historical and scholarly aspects of his work, then this is a book that you will want to eventually pick up. Due to its lack of brevity in information and the level of obsessiveness in its detail, however, this is still a book that you will want to pick up later, after your collection already includes numerous other Dylan books -- biographies, lyrical analyses, etc. -- before you take on this daunting volume.

MUST HAVE FOR ALL DYLAN FANS

This excellent book documents every concert, recording session and personal appearance that Dylan has ever done. Includes T.V. and radio appearances as well as unrealesed recordings. The book is laid out by each year and tells what Dylan was doing on a particular day of that year. Incredible and exhaustive research which makes one believe that Dylans every move has been documented by someone and all that info has been gathered in this stupendous edition. Out of the many Dylan books I own , this is without a doubt the one I turn to the most. INVALUABLE.

Nice job: blanced, infomative and objective

This was a really nice effort on Stacey Luftig's part. Joni has been the object of fascination and scorn for several decades, it's nice to have a compendium of sorts where the full picture emerges of a Canadian farm girl transformed into a folk singer, rock star, jazz dilletante, all the while maintaining her artistic integrity. She has left such an indeligible mark on the history of popular music. One major slam, though: it's incredible to think in a book with this much obvious research that Rickie Lee Jones would be confused (in the photograph with Bonnie Raitt) for Joni Mitchell. For shame...

Just what I've always wanted

What a great idea to compile reviews and articles about Joni Mitchell! I've saved a pile of clippings myself, but none cover the breadth and depth of what this book does. It is truly an achievement, and I thank the author for doing such a fine job. I know Joni Mitchell's songs "inside out", and now it's great to know their background, as well as other people's views. I got lost on the guitar tuning section, but I'm sure someone out there will appreciate the information.

lord have mercy!

If you are going to be stolen by raiding Apaches, you'd better hope you are made of the same kind of mesquite and hickory as little eleven year old Herman Lehmann. This is one of America's wildest tales of hardship and adventure, and nobody can tell it better than the sufferer and endurer, Herman. By the time it is over, the multi-lingual Herman stands out as one of the most fascinating characters in any time or place- EVER. He adopts the Apache culture until he pretty much out-Apaches even the hardest raiders. A small miscalculation of liquor and temper and a well- or ill-placed blow set him adrift even from the Apaches, who give a whole now definition to the term "wild-asses." You'll never think of Plains Indians the same way again- its not a racist or cultural problem, it is just that the folks who capture Herman are just hard to imagine from where we are sitting now. His life with them (he became a fearsome raider, too), and then as a hunted outcast who finds refuge with his former enemies the Comanches after a truly Biblical sojourn absolutely alone on the plains, hiding, for over a year....and then-- goes back to white "civilization" and tells us the wildest tale of all- how he re-integrated and then led a pretty normal life (he was not somebody you'd want to talk ugly to in the local saloon, but hey).

This book is a thousand things, all of them astonishing. Let's just say, if you are a captive, and some scarred old warrior offers you the guts out of a baby antelope that has been roasted, whole and alive in a bonfire that might also be used to.... well, just do as Herman did and chow down with all the enthusiasm you can muster.

Captivating Story

This is a book about Herman Lehmann, who is a 3x great uncle to my sons. I first read this book 40 years ago. I'm so glad to have found that this true life story has been re-printed. It reads like the best of western adventure tales. Herman Lehmann was captured by a tribe of Native Americans when he was only 11 years of age. He lived with that tribe for a few years, and was included in all their rituals and training that a young brave would receive. He left that first tribe and lived on his own for about a year in the Oklahoma territory and Texas wilderness. He then joined another Native tribe. Adopted by Quanah Parker, Herman was found and brought back to his birth family, where he had to be taught how to conduct himself in that culture which he had totally forgotten. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the west, in Native American culture, and the settlers in Texas in the latter half of the 19th Century. Other books have been written about Herman Lehmann, I recommend A. C. Green's "The Last Captive," as an addition to this book in your library.

Beautiful and challenging but not impossible

I bought this as a gift for my piano-playing wife. It is one of my favorite piano pieces. I wanted something that would be challenging for her but not impossible or too monumental for her to tackle. This fits the bill perfectly, but I will warn you that someone with small hands will have difficulty playing this piece. If you are not familiar with this piece, it is very short (just two pages of music), so don't be surprised or disappointed with that.

A legend brought to life

Hudson Taylor is one of the most inspirational figures in the history of world missions. Forsaking the comforts of Europe and the opportunity to gain wealth and prominence, Taylor instead sensed a divine burden to bring the message of God's grace to the highly populated empire of China. He left for China in 1853 on the first of many missionary journeys to Asia and became the founder of China Inland Mission.

From the beginning, his life was one of hardship and deprivation. His wife, the love of his life, died. Several children died. He faced persecution, misunderstanding, difficulty, poor health, and constant social and political unrest in various provinces of China. At one point a Chinese empress ordered the death of all foreigners. Taylor's mission lost many to execution as a result of this decree. Yet Taylor persisted. During one particular phase he prayed and worked to see 1,000 Western missionaries enter China during five years--the actual total was 1,153 by the time the five years had passed.

Opponents who feared Taylor's Christian message dubbed him the "White Devil." Here, the graphic novel format is used to tell the life story of Hudson Taylor, drawing upon the biography written by Taylor's descendants. The authors were careful to preserve the text and events of that biography as they adapted the story to this format, adding well-drawn pictures and compelling graphics.

Fans of graphic novels will greatly enjoy this volume. Those who are already familiar with the basics of Hudson Taylor's story will find new details emerging, and known events coming to life by virtue of the excellent artwork.

This is an excellent workbook for students or healthcare professionals who are just beginning to interpret 12-lead EKGs. The book covers what is expected, but the manner in which it presents the material brings much clarity to the topic.

About the Author
Jacqueline M. Green, MS, RN, APN, NE-BC, is Supervising Advanced Practice Nurse, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick NJ, USA. Previously, she was Director of the Center for Nursing Practice and Education at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick NJ and also served there as the Clinical Nurse Specialist of Cardiac Services. Ms. Green is certified in Adult Critical Care Nursing by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and as a Nurse Executive by the American Nurses Association. In addition to co-authoring 12-Lead EKG Confidence: A Step by Step Guide (Springer Publishing Company, 2010), she co-authored Breaking the Fall (2011). Anthony J. Chiaramida, MD, FACC, is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, USA, (UMDNJ) and Director of the Division of Cardiology at the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy, NJ. Dr. Chiaramida is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. He is certified by American Board of Internal Medicine and is Board Certified in the Cardiovascular Disease Subspecialty. Dr. Chiaramida holds licenses to practice medicine in New Jersey, New York, and Georgia. He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in his specialty area in JAMA, J of CV Pharmacology Chest, The Lancet, and the NE Journal of Medicine. He has conducted Grand Rounds on cardiac-related topics, including CHF, AFib, Acute MI, Unstable Angina and Non ST Elevation MI, and Endocarditis. He has presented papers at GA Heart Association Annual Meeting, and the ACP Conference, NJ Chapter. His research areas have included Controlled Clinical Trials for Digitalis, Infarct Survival, Prevention of Events with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibition and others. Excellent EKG learning guide, walks you through the process...

This is an excellent book even for beginners. It is very plain and walks you through the steps of reading and interpreting 12-lead EKGs. There are lots of illustrations and exercises and much hand-holding in the text.
