Read this and be open to transformation

I have purchased a total of three copies of this book and am on my second read-through with close friends. Ms. Hougen's little book is both simple and profound. It is easy to understand; it is grounded in reality, yet points us to the bigger reality of God pursuing a relationship with us. She invites us into a life of contemplative spirituality that "assumes with both head and heart. . .that if I am in Christ, God is already fully present." But there's more: "Being present to God is not just having ideas about him but soaking in God's love and mercy for us as our sole means of transformation and carrying that Presence, that love, into our day."
Read this book, more than once, and then cooperate with God as he transforms you into who you were created to be!

A life-changing Primer

Hougen's insights reveals the games we play with God and ourselves, especially our false selves and delves into the vagerities of our self-defenses and constructs that prevent many Christians from experiencing intimacy with God. In many ways Hougen takes the wisdom of St John of the Cross and applies it to a conservative evangelical context in the 21st century.

amazing!

This is the BEST book that I've read during my seminary education in terms of spiritual development/ Christian formation. Hougen poignantly speaks about the lies we (often unknowingly) believe about ourselves. Not only does she articulately expose what so many of us struggle to maintain as our identities (having it all together, being the responsible one, always being the good example, or even those of us who've given up out of frustration) in attempts to build self-confidence and competency, and even to earn God's approval.
Hougen has the gift of not only helping readers realize all the dark, sticky and not-so-pretty junk in our (perhaps subconscious) lives, but she does so in a way that feels deeply freeing and soothing. Probably half of my book is highlighted, as it seemed like every page I'd have several "Ah-Hah!" moments before reaching the bottom.
A MUST READ for anyone seeking to go deeper with Christ, and ABSOLUTELY a must read for those feeling BURNT OUT, EXHAUSTED, or DESPERATE.
