A wonderful portrait of a great American Artist

I was searching for my copy of this book and it appears to have disappear! I used to just have a wonderful feeling just touching the book and have recommended it to a number of people who apreciate art and that of Miss Okeeffe, especially. I find such stories of how the author, Ms. Patten would encourage Miss O'Keeffe to assist her as she made them bread and the pleasure the artist got from doing that simple task. I also found it very interesting the method O'Keeffe developed for her daily walks --- carrying stones in her pockets that helped her know how far she had walked. And the precision with which she requested her simple clothing be laid out! I do think the book was one that show the love the author developed for Miss Okeeffe and that the author also saw how destructive some of the artists so called friends treated her in the last months of her life!

Why Not?

I have read the Greek New Testament for over forty years. When I took First Year Greek and learned the vocabulary in Machen, we made our own flash cards and memorized them as we walked the sidewalks and stood in line for lunch. It wasn't long after that when someone printed the flash cards. When someone purchased those, he was really cool! Then came the cassette pronunciation programs and on and on it has developed. At one time, we wondered who could afford the cassette programs, because you had to own a cassette recorder! Then the flash cards went on video, and you had to have a video player. Now, to use this program, you must have an iPod. But if some stodgy old prof complains about this, then he needs to look around campus and see how many of his students already have an iPod!
And even if your parents have not yet given you one of these amazing things, you can install the program on your computer!

The first strength of this program lies in the pronunciations coupled with the visuals of both Greek and English words. Some purists will complain that it does not use the Modern Greek pronunciation. So make your own vocab program! We will still get by with old Erasmus! The second strength of the program is that it is tied to two widely used first year grammars - Mounce and Duff (one for the Yanks and one for the Brits?). But you can learn these levels of vocabulary in conjunction with any first year text. It takes you down to those words that appear 50 times in the NT and a little less.

It's a winner! But don't think it will work any "passive magic" on you! You still will have to remember what you see and hear and eventually write it down on a test or recite your translation in class. But look at it this way. Other students used to mock us Greek Geeks on campus as we walked around with our vocab cards. Now they won't mock you because it is all on a cool iPod! But who looks at their iPod when they are listening to it? Oh, well, maybe there will be another program to solve that problem!

Good, but could be better.

As a student of the NT who is terrible at remembering vocab i was excited to see this product. I have both Greek and Hebrew (and find the Hebrew a bit better). Mostly they are fine and the matching to given text books is very useful if you use those textbooks, but I have a few criticisms.
Firstly, whilst an auditory element is fantastic I think the pronunciation is awkward and not always accurate. It is very much an American accented pronunciation, which may be different to what others learned.
Secondly, there is a complete absence of accents! This is my constant frustration with NT Greek texts which also assume students of the NT (as opposed to Classicists) don't need to bother with such minor (not) matters. Give us accents please and make the pronunciation consistent with them.
Thirdly, it seems to me that a shuffle function is essential. The danger with any flash card system is that our brains remember the order of the English words. This product would be so much better if one could select to randomly shuffle, or to review only verbs, only prepositions, and so on.
On the up side, you can load them on your ipod/phone, not have to worry about carrying flashcards around with you, and look less dorky whilst riding the bus. I would recommend this product to beginners studying the NT, especially if you are being taught with the corresponding grammars.

Edith Warner (1893-1951), who lived by the Rio Grande at the Otowi Switch in northern New Mexico, has become a legendary figure owing largely to her portrayal in two books: The Woman at Otowi Crossing, by Frank Waters, and The House at Otowi Bridge, by Peggy Pond Church. Because she is famous for her tearoom, where she entertained scientists from the Manhattan Project, few people realize that Edith Warner was a serious writer. The book's title is taken from an autobiographical fragment published here for the first time. Also included are letters, essays published and unpublished, and journal entries (salvaged by various friends from the original, which was burned after Warner's death at her request). Thousands of readers have been fascinated by this modest woman whose friendships with Pueblo Indians and atomic scientists seem to epitomize the paradoxes of life in New Mexico. Fabulous book. I live in Los Alamos and have known several people who would go to Edith Warner's place for dinner. I drive by the old place almost weekly. The book captures the spirit of the Rio Grande, the canyon, the place... Such a wonderful read...

Because I visited Los Alamos, read a few books about the time of the Atomic Bomb, this little book was another side of the story. I enjoyed the human interest and the importance of Edith Warner in the overall story of this period of time.

The real Edith Warner

This is a beautiful book. I tried to read Frank Waters' famous book about Edith Warner and gave up before the end of the first chapter: though I didn't know Ms. Warner, I knew that Waters could not possibly have been describing this woman who had chosen to live in a primitive house by the Rio Grande at Otowi. Patrick Burns researched her life like a a true historian and has provided us with a clear picture of who Edith Warner was, how she experienced her life in Otowi, and how she thought. He has produced an utterly beautiful book filled with photos, reminiscences of friends, and Ms. Warner's own writings. Those acquainted with New Mexico will almost be able to see, hear, and smell the land as this modest and gentle woman experienced it, and all will enjoy numerous bits of trivia concerning Los Alamos, the Chile Line, and the San Ildefonso pueblo as well.

A wonderful and enjoyable little book!

The history of Western medical care on Navajo reservations in the twentieth century, however, demonstrates that the incorporation of indigenous healing practices did not come without struggle. The advent of American mass culture, urbanization, and other forces made it difficult for young Diné to learn and preserve the old ways. At the same time, non-Native medical providers, missionaries, and U. S. government officials sometimes hindered the effort of the Diné to use traditional ceremonies and medical care.

Focusing on the post-World War II period, Davies's detailed study begins where Robert Trennert's White Man's Medicine (1998), the only other general history of Western medicine among the Navajo, ends. Chronicling the advent of so-called "western" or "scientific" medicine in the modern era, including the development of indigenous healing traditions and such new institutions as the Native American Church, Davies shows the skill and adaptability of Diné in accepting the services of physicians while keeping the work of traditional healers among their health-care options. Davies also explores contemporaneous Navajo critiques of both "high-tech" and traditional health-care modes, detailing Navajo battles to integrate their healing practices into government and private health-care systems.

The will of the Diné people to achieve self-determination in health care--and, indeed, to view health and healing in a broad and interactive context--has been so resolute that both tribal leadership and federal officials have been forced to acknowledge and contend with the Diné insistence on shaping Western medicine to fit their way of life. "The Diné," one of Davies' informants states, "are learning to function in two different worlds," and, in so doing, are intent on seeking the best of both.

About the Author
Wade Davies is a professor of history, specializing in Navajo, American Indian, and modern United States History. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he earned his B.A. in History and Political Science from Indiana State University in Bloomington in 1991. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University in 1998. Currently, Dr. Davies teaches Navajo History and other classes at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico, located just east of the Navajo Nation.

The history is not always harmonious, but a gradual integration of the two main healing philosophies emerges. Author and history professor Davies highlights the determination and flexibility of Dine in "accepting the services of [Western] physicians while keeping the work of traditional healers among their health-care options."

"Healing Ways" adds to the previous work of author Robert Trennert's "White Man's Medicine (1998)," which singly covered the general history of Western medicine among the Navajo before World War II. Both histories add to the present picture of developing cooperative integrations and blendings of traditional Dine health practices into Western medical care systems. It also underlines the pervasive determination of the Dine to reshape their health care in an interactive model that both informs and educates, while preserving the best of both ways of life.

A well-researched scholarly study

This is a well-written study of a topic that really hasn't been dealt with in such thorough detail before. In fact, this is the only book I've been able to find anywhere about Navajo health care after World War II. I was impressed by the author's extensive use of interviews with the Navajos themselves for his research, in addition to the voluminous written records he used. It's only fitting, given the Navajos' rich oral tradition, that a study of their culture should draw heavily on firsthand, oral sources.
Prof. Davies' argument that both traditional Navajo healing and Western medicine have valid and valuable contributions to make is well supported, and the idea that each has something to learn from the other is encouraging not only for the future of Navajo health care but for all of Western medicine. Overall, this is a thoroughly professional study written in a clear hand that's easily accessible to any reader, not just professors and grad students.

Greater understanding between cultures

I found this book to be helpful in understanding cultural differences not just between Western society and Navajos but other cultures as well. As someone who works as a volunteer with refugees from several different countries, the information in the book has given me a greater incentive to be more tolerant and understanding with the reservations that people of other backgrounds have to some of our medical practices and government procedures. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes collected by the author of personal experiences and opinions of Navajos.
