Brillian Book on Female Candomble Religion, from a male

If you are looking for an excellent book on the Candomble Orixa Worship of Brazil, then this is the classic. The book as the title states is of the power of the Brazilian Priestesses of the orixas, also known as orisha. Mai De Santos, or Priestesses of Orixas are as powerful, and as highly respected as the Babalawos of the Ifa and Babalorichas of Lucumi. I highly recomend this to all Voodoo Mambos, Santeria Santeras, and all Woman of the world, who believe in the power of Woman.
From a man's point of view this is a brilliant and inspiring work, and should be read buy all who honor the Ancient African Gods.

A Great Classic

This is one of the great classics of anthropology and Latin American studies. Largely ignored during the rush to make anthropology a science of culture, this is a description of Candomble and the women who led the spiritual life of Bahia in the thirties. Good to see that it is now available in this format.

About the Author
Carol Hill is the author of scientific articles on the Grand Canyon published in Science, Journal of Hydrology, Geosphere, and other journals, as well as Christian apologetics articles for Perspectives in Science and Christian Faith. This is a very attractive work with full color photographs of the Grand Canyon on nearly every page and is written at a general level so anyone can read it.

The book deals with how the Grand Canyon came to be and looks at two basic positions: standard geology versus flood geology. Flood geology (which is a part of young earth creationism) is the view that most of the earth's surface is the result of a global, cataclysmic flood that occurred about 4,000 years ago as recorded within the pages of the Bible, specifically Genesis 6-9, and is also known as Noah's flood. Standard or modern geology sees the Grand Canyon rock layers as having been deposited at various intervals spanning over hundred of millions of years.

The book is divided into 5 parts and 20 chapters. Although this sounds daunting but it comes in at a little over 200 pages.

Part 1 consists of the first 4 chapters and outlines the two views, modern geology versus flood geology and delves into the time frames for each.

The chapters in Part 2 dive into the science of how geology works and covers sedimentary rocks, dating methods, the geologic column, plate tectonics, and how rocks can fracture, fault, and fold.

Part 3 tells the story of the fossil record of both plants and animals, and just as importantly, trace fossils. Part 4 is about how the Canyon was actually carved out. These chapters also show that each rock layer contains its own ecosystem, something that makes sense in light of modern geology, but cannot be explained in terms of flood geology.

The last part consists of the last two chapters which tie everything together. Chapter 19 takes us on a 7 mile hike in narrative form with lots of photographs and hits on the various details from previous chapters showing why and how flood geology simply cannot explain the many and various features of the Canyon.

Chapter 20 concludes with answering the question, is science and flood geology simply different worldviews or presuppositions when it comes to explaining how the Canyon came to be. The answer? Science is willing to follow where ever the data leads. And flood geology? It starts with the conclusion and seeks justification for its views. The data backs modern geology at every point.

This book, to the honest reader, is devastating to young earth creationism and flood geology and is highly recommended.

Flood? What flood?

I have been waiting for my copy of “The Grand Canyon Monument to an Ancient Earth” since I heard about it nearly a year ago. It arrived May 5th, and it was worth the wait. The first thing readers will notice is that this is a beautifully illustrated book. The efforts of Tim Helble and graphic designers Bronze Black and Susan Coman are proven on nearly every page. The second thing you will notice is that this book is an excellent short introduction to geology. This is true even ignoring the special focus on countering widely believed falsehoods about the Grand Canyon.

The principle authors are professional geologists, and most are evangelical Christians. Over the years they became increasingly concerned at the distortions, and outright lies that are spread by young earth, “Flood Geology.” This book’s title is in fact a counter to a popular creationist tract, “Grand Canyon Monument to Catastrophe” which promotes the absurd idea that Noah’s Flood deposited all the sediments, and carved the Grand Canyon in a single year just 4000 years ago. The authors show that this is not merely physically impossible, but that such an idea is unsupported by the Bible.

There are an estimated 40 percent of Americans today who are being fooled by outfits like Answers in Genesis, or the Institute for Creation Research. These people are the intended audience for this book. As the last sentence in “The Grand Canyon Monument to an Ancient Earth” says, “Truth always matters.”

This book is a monument to the clear evidence.

When we first met the Hills, they had been members of a church that had begun accepting the YEC teaching. They were torn between the simple facts of what they knew as scientists and told that to be Bible believing Christians they must accept the opposite in their faith. In other words, they must leave their brains out of their faith in the Bible, and their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. As I recall, we were teaching "Genesis", and we discovered that the Bible made no such claims as were being preached by Henry Morris, etc. In the years since, we have observed the Hills "up close" and shared many times the struggles related to sharing the Gospel with men and women of science, with a "second front" being fought from the side with the YEC movement. A few years ago, Carol told us of her project of writing this book. I've read some of her technical papers concerning caves and geology, and struggled with some of the terms, but was greatly educated by her knowledge.

Now, having read this masterpiece, I'm greatly impressed with the thoroughness of her work, and the work of the other authors throughout. It is very readable with easy to verify facts and illustrations. The photography is first rate, showing the beauty of the canyon while providing understanding to the evidence. Unlike what I have encountered with those of the differing views, there are no attacks and no name calling. (And I have personally attended and "endured" many hours in silence while listening to lectures from the opposite side . . . and discovered no humor when attempts were made to be at least friendly and cordial.)

Many years ago, our family attended lectures at a local church given by Henry Morris expounding on his views of the flood . . . let's just say that the evidence did not then, nor now, support Morris' teaching. This book clarifies the YEC views and puts each to the test of the demonstrable facts, in word, in illustration, and photograph, without being unkind nor insulting.

Recently, I purchased a second copy to loan out, not willing to lose our autographed gift copy. The first loan is to a friend that works as a researcher for the Park Service, and when offered, he immediately borrowed my second copy without hesitation. I'm anxious to hear his comments when he returns from a trip.

Prayer Takes Many Forms

In her charming new book How Did Bible Heroes Pray (Kregel Kidzone, February 2005, hardcover, 24 pages) author Mona Hodgson helps children explore the concept of prayer and how to integrate it into their own daily lives. Hodgson points to the heroes children may be familiar with in the Bible and shares how each of these special people turned to God in prayer. For each example given, the author cites the relevant scripture passage for further research and edification. As Daniel turned to God on his knees, children are encouraged to pray to God using this posture. As Samuel lay in bed listening to and conversing with God, children are reminded that they too can take quiet time in bed to pray.

Next Hodgson turns to detailing situations when children might feel led to pray. Jonah's fear, Job's sadness and Jesus' need for "alone time" with his father are all situations to which today's child can relate. Reminding ourselves and our children that facing moments of uncertainty or disappointment with prayer is a valuable lesson we can offer our families and students.

This book is geared at children ages five and up, as each page features only a few lines of text. A noteworthy contribution to How Did Bible Heroes Pray is the artwork of illustrator Hollie Gillett, whose delightful illustrations feature a broad cross section of ages and races on a pallet of beautiful backgrounds.

The Power of Prayer

HOW DID BIBLE HEROES PRAY? is a beautifully illustrated book written by Monda Hodgson and illustrated by Hallie Gillett, published by Kregel Publications. It is a children's picture book that illustrates all the different ways a child can talk to God/pray by using Bible heroes as examples. This would be a delightful bedtime story book read to calm young children and let them know God is always with them, and they can talk to Him at any time, even in their own bed at night, so they are never alone. This book can help teach children to pray at a young age, so that they will grow up with an understanding of the importance in and power of praying and grow up with a personal relationship with the Lord. The book could also be used by Sunday school teachers, babysitters, and day care professionals, as well as anytime an adult wants a quick read book to calm and settle a child. Young children who have early reading skills will be able to look at the beautiful pictures as they read the book independently. I highly recommend this book as a useful parenting tool to all parents.

Kenneth W. Osbeck (MA, University of Michigan) taught for thirty-five years, first at Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, and then at Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary. He also served as music director for Children’s Bible Hour, Radio Bible Class, and several churches. Go beyond praise and worship

When I first became a Christian about 8 years ago, I somehow got the idea that praise and worship music was the truly "spiritual music" - hymns were old-fashioned, and people who enjoyed them did so because they were hide-bound by tradition. If you're thinking this now, please listen to me.
A year or so ago I heard about well-known and respected Christians like John MacArthur and Joni Eareckson Tada talk about how the old hymns were so meaningful to them and really strengthened their faith. That got me thinking: so it's not just stodgy old 80-year olds who love those old hymns. Maybe there's something to them after all.
So I got this book. And I have been so blessed by it. God has shown me that true worship is so much more than just a feeling. He wants all parts of me - my body, my soul, and my spirit - to be involved in worship. So many in churches today are satisfied with getting only their spirits involved; some want their body involved too (lifting hands, etc.); but the truly mature (I am coming to believe) also get their souls (or minds) involved. Your mind doesn't get involved when you just repeat "Isn't He" fifty times; it does when you sing (and really think about) the wonderful words to songs like "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" or "Blessed Assurance."
Both these songs and many, many more are covered in this book. Get it, sing the songs, think about what Christ has done for you, think about the circumstances of their writing. And take your worship to another level.
