Samuel Rawet (1929-84) was born in a small Polish town near Warsaw that was eventually destroyed during World War II. He emigrated to Brazil at the age of seven and grew up on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in neighborhoods teeming with Jews and other immigrants. Known as the pioneer of Brazilian-Jewish writing, Rawet represents an artfully sensitive voice of the Jewish Diaspora in Latin America, especially Brazil, a country of more than 150 million inhabitants that today harbors nearly 150,000 Jews whose ancestry is primarily Eastern European.

As Nelson Vieira notes, the stories in this collection all relate to the vicissitudes of displaced individuals who are frequently trapped by society's rigid norms. Some, like the Jew with the white beard and the long black overcoat in the title story who steps off the gangplank, are entering a world that is no longer theirs. Old World characters enter a New World where they are not used to the language or the sun or "the frustration of not being able to explain." Other characters can't communicate even with those familiar to them; one woman describes herself and her sister as two strangers in a doctor's waiting room.

Rawet's characters eloquently embody exile, alienation, and displacement. His is a prophetic, solitary Brazilian-Jewish voice that Vieira has made available at last to English-speaking audiences. Writing in the 1950s and 1960s, Rawet knew first-hand that we all can be others and strangers, even in our own land.

An important voice in the Jewish literature of Brazil

"The Prophet and Other Stories," by Samuel Rawet, brings together 12 short stories by this historically important author. The stories have been translated from Portuguese into English by Nelson H. Vieira, who also wrote the introduction.
Born in eastern Europe, Rawet (1929-84) emigrated to Brazil as a child. Vieira calls him "the proclaimed pioneer of Brazilian-Jewish writing." Rawet's stories are moody and introspective. His stories often read like extended prose poems, and his language frequently has an odd, almost hypnotic quality.
Rawet writes about the immigrant experience, anti-Semitism, family conflict, and other topics. He takes a modern approach to a figure from Jewish folklore in the story "Johny Golem." Many of his stories are "metafictions" in which the narrator comments on his own work as a storyteller. If you are interested in Jewish literature or Latin American literature, give this short volume a try. I also recommend the novels and short stories of the excellent Brazilian-Jewish author Moacyr Scliar.

When the United States declared war on Spain in 1898, rumors abounded throughout the nation that the Spanish-speaking population of New Mexico secretly sympathized with the enemy. At the end of the war, The New York Times warned that New Mexico's "Mexicans professed a deep hostility to American ideas and American policies." As long as Spanish remained the primary language of public instruction, the Times admonished, "the majority of the inhabitants will remain 'Mexican' and retain a pseudo-allegiance [to Spain]."

This perception of Spanish-speaking New Mexicans as "un-American" was widely shared. Such allegations of disloyalty, coupled with the prevalent views that all Mexican peoples were racially non-white and "unfit" to assume the rights and responsibilities of full citizenship, inspired powerful reactions among the Spanish-speaking people of New Mexico. Most sought to distinguish themselves from Mexican immigrants by emphasizing their "Spanish" roots. Tourism, too, began to foster the myth that nuevomexicanos were culturally and racially Spanish. Since the 1950s, historians, sociologists, and anthropologists have dismissed the ubiquitous Spanish heritage claimed by many New Mexicans.

John M. Nieto-Phillips, himself a nuevomexicano, argues that Spanish-American identity evolved out of a medieval rhetoric about blood purity, or limpieza de sangre, as well as a modern longing to enter the United States's white body politic.

I read this book years ago when I was in graduate school. I am reading it again and love it. I received it very quickly from the seller and it was in great condition. Anyone interested in issues of racial formation in the southwest should pick up this book.

Do not buy digital version

This can really only be read in a physical copy, not a digital one. They have scanned each page, which means you cannot change the font size. I was trying to read it on a full sized monitor and can barely make out the text.

Using with Instructor

I'm taking weekly lessons and this is the book my instructor teaches from. The material is presented very logically and methodically. Over, the past 9 months of use, I can "see" the thought and effort that went into creating and organizing the material. I feel like I'm making progress yet am constantly challenged and engaged by the material. My teacher will also sometimes jump forwards and backwards in the material when he senses my eagerness and frustration, respectively. I will always recommend beginners study with a teacher, there's simply no better way to learn classical guitar IMO. But, if you cannot afford that luxury, you can't go wrong with this book.

So why only four stars then? Because music books should ALWAYS be spiral bound so they will lay flat on the music stand. Publishers take note: release a spiral bound version, and I'll happily buy this book again.

Great book to learn guitar fundamentally and classically

I played guitar before buying this book, but mostly chords and strumming with amateurish picking. I picked up this book to get a more fundamental and classical training with playing music on the guitar. If you are self-learning, you got to be aware of pacing yourself so that you can be adequate with progressing lessons.

The language is good but could be helped with a more detail descriptions with certain lessons or better illustrations. I found myself struggled more than once figuring out whether or not I'm following the instructions correctly. Other than that, it's a big book with songs that can keep you occupied and learning for years.
