Playing Hurt - A Call to be a Gospel-Centered Husband

Playing Hurt by author Brian Goins (Kregel, 2011) is, hands down, the best book of its kind that I have read. It is thoroughly biblical, Gospel-centered, and written from such a manly perspective you can almost smell the sweaty socks laying in the corner and see the underwear laying in the floor that didn't get picked up after the last shower (or maybe the one before last).

The book centers around Paul's well-known admonition to husbands in Ephesians 5:25: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her." As such, Goins shows that Christ is the ultimate example for Christian husbands to seek to emulate. Goins does not, however, simply encourage husbands to look at how far we are from Christ's example, and then encourage us to try harder to do better. Instead, he shows that we cannot live in this way without Christ's power and presence with us. As Goins says, "God's not looking for willpower and good techniques. He wants men brave enough to depend on His strength more than their own." (139)

The great irony the author points out is that the very one we have been called to love sacrificially, our wife, is the one who often "hurts" us, whether through unmet expectations, harsh criticism, or in some other way. It is at this point that many husbands go running for the bench, either by lashing out in retaliation, or by clamming up, going into silent mode. Goins shows how it is at these difficult moments that men must man-up, "playing hurt" rather than simply giving up and being content to sit on the bench.

Goins writes not from the perspective of one who has achieved the status of "model husband," but as one who is a fellow traveler. He shares personal examples where he has gotten it right, as well as instances where he has blown it. All along the way, he continues to hold up the example of Christ, never allowing husbands to settle simply for "the best I can do." And, like a good coach, he is constantly shouting encouragement from the sidelines.

While the book focuses on the man's role as husband, Goins takes a spiritually holistic approach to the topic by demonstrating the necessity of elements such as discipleship, mentoring and accountability. He also reminds us about the reality of spiritual warfare, and the booby traps of lust, pornography, etc. And, he manages to write a spiritually-challenging book by incorporating a great balance of strong biblical truth, real-life examples, and a healthy dose of humor (including his use of the "Black Knight" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!)

Men should buy this book and read it. They should encourage their friends to read it. Women should encourage their husbands to read it, and tell their girlfriends to encourage their husbands to read it as well. It will be required reading for any man for whom I provide pre-marital counseling, including my two sons. May God use this book for His glory as husbands answer the call to love their wives as Christ loved the church.

Love Your Wife

In Playing Hurt, Brian Goins teaches husbands about how men are suppose to handle their marriage. Men can play hurt in sports and still have the determination to get back up and get back in the game. But in marriage, Goins has seen men walk away and give up on being there for their wives. When men are hurt we incline to have our way. We want our wives to change but we often don't get to root of who we can actually change. Sometimes men tend to shrink back and play hurt when we get offended. It is imperative that men grow up and overcome their boyish ways. We don't always have to win the fights and we don't have to withdrawn from our wife when we become angry. Goins had a great point about remembering who our real enemy is. It isn't our wives but it is the king of lies, Satan. We are called to love our wife like Christ loved the church. One day we will have to hand our wife back to Jesus.

Goins has many role models in his life that he is encouraged by and challenged to become like. He isn't looking up to celebrities' marriage but everyday men who love their wife like Christ does. Goins shared Greg`s story that really jumped out at me. Greg takes care of his wife who is in a wheelchair. He loved her enough to help her in health and sickness. That is my definition of what marriage is suppose to be like. We can't give up and say it is too hard. Most of us choose to get married.

This is what we are called to do in marriage and in our lives:

"Jesus is a perfect God loving imperfect people unconditionally for a lifetime. The only thing greater than that would be if God's imperfect people loved other imperfect people unconditionally for a lifetime" (Page 137).

I would recommend this book to any husband and single men. If you are single don't wait until you're married to read this book you can start reading it now. Women can also read this book to help understand the inside life of a man and what we go through. I am currently single and not married yet. This book has helped me to prepare for my future wife. I must always remember that we are different. I have to express my love for my wife by telling her how beautiful she is every single day. Women need men to open their mouths and encourage them. It isn't always about providing and moving the grass. We have to verbally and listen to our wives. The key is communication and caring. God can help anybody to grow into the person he created them to be. If you are struggling in your marriage or just want to know how to love your wife better, I encourage you to read this book. Any marriage can be improved with God's intervention and his help! It is not too late!

Stay in the game

This book is great for men trying to stay in the tough game of marriage. It gives some practical insights but mainly level sets our job to a biblical standard and encourages us to not be so selfish. I'm struggling in my marriage and this inspires me to push through! In fact I bought copies for friends who are also struggling. I wish there was a version for wives!

I really enjoyed this book. While its topic is not exactly fishing, not exactly enviro, not exactly travel - Johnson mixes opinions, observations and facts on trout, politics, south west history, people, and a look at how one may live in a very elemental style. He writes well. I will read it again and the photos are fascinating. I hope Rex Johnson does more books as this, along with his guidebook on trout in southern new mexico, are very high quality........

A Refreshing Read

This is a fascinating exploration of a relatively unknown region of two countries. A study in determination and patience, Johnson's writing sparkles like the clear rills, pools and falls that I thought were gone forever. A refuge for survivors, from the Apaches to the rancheros, parrots and "narcos" of today, this is another view of the region Cormac McKarthy calls "not for old men". Complimented with great photography.

Good for an intermediate player to sight read and enjoy

Denes Agay has selected and edited a great collection of piano pieces that I, as an intermediate player can mostly sight-read. I have used these pieces in teaching dance by playing right along with my classes while teaching. I do this by sitting at the classroom piano placed on a diagonal slant from the front corner so I can glance at the kids while reading the music.

I think it is invaluable to have live music in the classroom while the students are moving. You can start and stop as needed; put emphasis where needed; combine phrases and pieces spontaneously; play softer or with more emphasis or gusto - whatever the class is needing at the time.

These pieces by the Mozart are unsurpassed for quality listening. The melodies are uplifting and full of phrases that are akin to the students' language lessons. Even being able to play the pieces for your students is more than listening pleasure - it opens their ears to the nuances great music provides.

One of my favorite pieces to accompany the students while they skip in patterns is Spring Song K.596.

About the Author
Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887, the second of seven children, and grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. By the time she graduated from high school she was determined to become an artist, spending the next few years studying art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York, and later teaching art in Texas, Virginia and South Carolina. In 1916, Alfred Stieglitz exhibited 10 of her charcoal abstractions at his famous avant-garde gallery, 291, closing the gallery the next year with a solo exhibition of her works. From 1918 on they lived and worked together in New York and Lake George. Three years after Stieglitz's death in 1946, O'Keefe moved to New Mexico, whose stunning vistas and stark landscape configurations had inspired her work since 1929. It was here that she painted her most famous pictures, working in oils until her eyes failed her in the 1970s. She continued working in pencil and watercolor until 1982 and produced objects in clay until 1984, two years before she died at age 98.

Charming and unusual

How charming and unusual to hear in O'Keeffe's own words the stories behind her early drawings -- from the time she stopped all art altogether for some time until she felt she absolutely had to put this on paper, and then see what it was; to stories of New Mexico antelopes, to a portrait, her words and drawings give an entirely new slant to the usual more familiar paintings and biographies.

A real treat for visual artists......

This is a very special little book probably will appeal mostly to visual artists.
As an emerging ceramic artist myself, coming from being a college professor,
I really enjoyed reading O'Keeffe's words while seeing the images she made.
It is a special treat! I found it first at the home of an artist friend of mine in
Woodstock, New York!!

This book is like a portal into Georgie O'Keefe's personal work. The book is rather inspiring and includes sketches and explanations from the author herself. It is a very intimate view of the artist. I bought this book as a gift to a friend who is a huge fan of the artist and she really enjoyed it. I thought it was an amazing buy.

About the Author
Doris Gazda is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Penn State University. She played violin professionally with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and as a free-lance musician in the Washington, D.C. area. She also taught strings for many years in the public schools of Montgomery County, MD and most recently served as a Faculty Associate at Arizona State University, where she taught string methods classes.

Through the festival, Jocoteños address their collective identity, the preservation of their folk culture, and their relationship to the social-political power structure of Jocotán. I Needed More Stories Behind the Stories...

My parents were born & raised in New Mexico, so I have a fascination with the Southwestern state. I was hoping for a bit more in these stories though. It was fun reading family names that I could relate via my own family (Garcia, Leyba, Lucero). Abe Pena seems to be a talented writer but I found the excerpt story on the nun, Sister Lydia, most interesting (and wished there was more). I would almost like to read a book simply focused on Sister Lydia's life, thoughts, feelings and emotions. That would be fantastic! A lot of the stories were simply 'informational' with a lot of boring statistical facts (dates & names) that bored me. I simply needed more stories behind the stories. There were a few interesting facts that I could relate to, knowing that my ancestry descended from Spain. It was an okay book...but I hope the author will next time focus on one story, sharing more family secrets, troubles, etc as per the literary classic, A Death in the Sanchez Family (which I plan to read next).

Pena Brings New Mexico Ancestors Into Focus Today.

Abe Pena is my uncle(his wife, Viola, is my dad's sister). I have visited the ranch in Grants and seen the areas and heard some of the stories in Memories Of Cibloa. His gift to all of us in the family (and to any reader) is the detail in which he descrbes the times and traditons of his life and of Northern New Mexico in general. He is also able to describe New Mexican life early in this century in a way that relates to those interested in New Mexico and Southwestern life today. -Mike Cisneros

Very good history lesson on NM Land Grants, west of the RG.

Abe is a reletive of mine and he did a very good job researching for the book. I was born and raised in Seboyeta, NM. This book was a good lesson for me on my recent past, and tought me some lessons on the history of the Spanish Land Grants in that area of New Mexico. It also brought back some very good memeories from my childhood. I am going to make sure my three sons read this book so they can learn about their ancestry. Very well done Abe ! Louie Jaramillo Jr.

Richard Crashaw (1612/13-1649) has been one of the most neglected, misunderstood, misread, and unappreciated of the so-called major metaphysical poets. Roberts is Professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia. he is the author of John Donne: An Annotated Bibliography of Modern Criticism, 1912-1967, John Donne: An Annotated Bibliography of Modern Criticism, 1968-1978, Richard Crashaw: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism, 1632-1980, and George Herbert: An Annotated Bibliography of Modern Criticism, Revised Edition, 1905-1984, all of which are available from the University of Missouri Press. He is also general editor of the commentary for the forthcoming variorum edition of the poetry of John Donne.

If anyone ever reads this review, I will be shocked.

These "new perspectives" on Richard Crashaw are already over 20 years old...
yet they are still cutting edge scholarship and the best out there.
I don't think it's too much to hope that somebody else somewhere still
cares about this truly amazing metaphysical poet...After all, scholarship
on John Donne is still going strong, including a widely-reviewed (and widely
available) recent biography...Why should there be no interest in a 17th
century English Catholic poet whose work still has the power to shock,
enchant, and inspire?

Thankfully almost none of the essays in this book are at all dry -- many of them
point out the "Protestant" bias against Crashaw that has affected literary views
of his poetry throughout the centuries. Perhaps the best essay begins with
a Crashaw epigram that readers have always found both mysterious and disturbing:

Suppose he had been Tabled at thy Teates,
Thy hunger feels not what he eates:
Hee'l have his Teat e're long (a bloody one)
The Mother then must suck the Son.

The analysis provided of this poem is both subtle and clarifying. Anyone with an
interest in the greatest of English poetry -- or interested in the Catholic faith
in England -- will be glad that they managed to track down this book and this
wonderful poet who still deserves to be read with understanding and delight.
