Assumptions were made...

Oddly, no one previously has made a constructive review. Yep, it was an early effort and apparently not much out there to compete with this book.
It is not really in a progressive order: subsequent tunes do not rely on command of a previous tune.
First couple tunes use double stops right away and do not differentiate when notes are, for example, played against an open A string or whether an A is held down on the D string. Not always an intuitive solution and thus requires close observation of a YouTube performer.
The beginning section contains instructions for a complete beginner which seems out from left field. If a book is going to immediately contain difficult tunes in the early pages, was this necessary?
The historical background and comments before a tune are quite helpful and presented as interesting stories.
Other sections are quite organized. A classical player will appreciate this; well, so will "fiddlers". Sections focus on various keys and related techniques required.
The first thing I always do with a book that does not just flop open is to take it to Staples and coil bind it.
I was hoping for a larger repertoire but the supplementary stuff makes up for it. See Duncan's collection for a huge alphebetized collection.
Now there's a constructive rev... Well, never mind.

The First and Classic Book on Bluegrass Fiddle

Bluegrass Boy Gene Lowinger wrote this book in the 1970's, when it was the first of it's kind. It is still a classic; well organized, insightful and well written by someone who knows. I'm surprised how well this book has aged. I have many of the more recent bluegrass fiddle books, including the excellent Stacy Phillips books, but I keep coming back to this one. Should be in the collection of any bluegrass fiddler.

Absolutely the Best!

This book presumes that you already play fiddle/violin, hopefully double stops too. Starting from there its full steam ahead. Learning songs, licks and fills. Also turn-arounds and transitions to the next chord/key. Its the best book I've seen- if you can play at this level. Also shows chords, a little. Not a long book, but packed with great instruction. A good book for making the transition from violin to fiddle. Add this one to your fiddle library.

My favorite Dulcimer book!!

I bought my copy in the late 70s, and still rely on it constantly. This is THE best dulcimer book to get, as a first book and as one you'll return to again and again. In it Jean Ritchie, who is pretty much the mother of the last 20 yrars of the dulcimer revivals, explains how to tune the dulcimer for all of the various modes, not just the 2 or 3 most common ones. She also has songs using each of the modes, ones simple enough for beginners and interesting enough for experienced players. This is traditional dulcimer playing, using a noter for melody & the open strings as drones. For detailed information on chording, check out other books. But if you want to know how to play those songs that are in other keys/modes than mixolydian and ionian, and/or want a good, complete, basic book (for learning and for reference), this one is it! Jean's book include pictures, history and other information too, print is a comfortable size & the music is written out large enough to see & read easily while playing.

Not the best to start out with, but a must-have

To start out, about a year ago, I did a school project where I built, taught myself how to play, studied the history of, and did a presentation on the Appalachian dulcimer. This was one of two books that I decided to get. The other book was Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer by Madeline MacNeil, which I went through first. I would recommend that as the one to start out with, and when you're done to read this one.

The primary difference is that this one is much more traditional, and Madeline MacNeil's has a much more well-rounded assortment of styles. However, the traditional style is something that you need to have an understanding for.

This book starts out by talking about the instrument, and it's history, before you learn anything about playing it. I think that's good, especially if you do what I did by first going through Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer by Madeline MacNeil. I already had a pretty good understanding of how to play it. Some people would say that it was important to learn the history first. However, I feel that it's good to know at least a little bit about playing before learning the history. This book, to me, is like a continuation of Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer by Madeline MacNeil, but it's a great book.

Clearly written

Clearly presents the three main views regarding the source of the materials. This fills a void in background understanding regarding inspiration, and the effect of that view on the interpretation of a passage.

Most commentaries, Bible handbooks, and theologies written in the last 100 years fail to include this explanatory material. While each is written from a particular point of view, most do not clearly state what that view is. This volume fills that void and makes it easier to discern the biases of commentary authors.

Untangle the synoptic problem

A major debate in New Testament studies over the past two hundred years is the "Synoptic Problem." This problem observes the differences between the three Synoptic Gospel (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and seeks to reconcile them. There are three categories where variations often occur: wording, content, and order. "Wording" refers to the specific Greek words chosen by each evangelist. "Content" refers to the thematic "pericopes" (literary units) that each author chose to include or exclude. "Order" refers to the specific sequence that Matthew, Mark, and Luke elected to arrange their Gospels.

Differences in these categories have great significance because they affect our view of Scripture in vital areas such as biblical inspiration, inerrancy, and perspicuity. They determine precisely who Jesus is and what words He spoke. Furthermore, they shape one's entire method of interpretation of the Synoptic Gospels. In short, the Synoptic Problem strikes at the very heart of the Christian faith, reflecting what we believe about God and His Word. "In large part, the answers to who Jesus really was depend upon how one approaches the first three Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke - which in turn depends upon how the three books came into being" (13).

So how should these differences be reconciled? In this book, the three most common views are articulated and defended. Grant R. Osborne and Matthew C. Williams join forces to present the "Two-/Four-Source View." John H. Niemelä advocates the "Two Gospel View." And F. David Farnell heralds the "Independence View." Thomas, as editor, presides over the discussion by offering a basic introduction to the subject and concludes with a summary of all arguments and responses. He states that the overarching purpose of the book is to "help individuals sort through issues and controversies that relate to the first three Gospels" with the ultimate goal of "strengthening the body of Christ" (18). In my estimation, Farnell makes the strongest case.

This is a helpful book on a complex subject that really helps untangle the synoptic problem. One unfortunate aspect is that the authors do not have an opportunity to rebut their opponent's responses, leaving some arguments unanswered.

About the Author
Viggo Olsen was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. He took premed studies at Tulane University and graduate studies at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. After receiving his medical training, he moved to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and founded a medical missions work in the Chittagong District where modern medical care was unknown. Dr. Olsen is now retired and living in California.

A World at Change!!

The man of the hour, Dr. Olsen, is remarkably used of God to bring many to Christ in the country of Bangladesh in the 1960's and 70's where violent governmental unrest formed calculated demise. East Pakistan forcibly moved to an autonomous state to mold a parliamentary government, birthing death and destruction in its wake to freedom. Dr. Olsen, his medical team and hospital were spared razing through God's timely intrusion.

The book parts throughout to reveal many a miracle beginning with Dr. Olsen, himself. He was a riotous, sin-seeking man before the phenomenal change by Christ. One medical associate refused to conceive that he came to the Savior as he whole-heartedly believed it unfeasible. He was well aware of the magnitude of sins that controlled Dr. Olsen's previous being. God took this reprobate of a man and turned him into an on-fire believer who left a spiritual trail of productive Christianity.

Drawbacks to the book: It was hard to tread through as it was penned in a detailed manner that lacked reader-appeal with its lengthy facts; reading through political details can relax one to a slumbering snooze. Not much of a description of this book available, so let me give you one - this is a book of transcribed SOLOS, NOT heads or charts of Django's most famous tunes. Great for advanced guitar students and for sightreading practice, including an excellent theory analysis of his style.
But if you're looking for a general Django songbook, this ain't the one! If you're a guitarist looking for some Django, maybe this should be your second or third book.

excellent Bible commentary

I think it's one of the best among commentaries by H, Ironside.
Especially, Ezra and Nehemiah commentaries are so valuable for assembly practice as well as individual Christian life.

As for me, this title is the first e-book which I have ever purchased.
I downloaded on new Nexus 7, and read and read it again.
I'm much satisfied with the convenience of e-book.
So if possible I will buy books as digital form.
