Salt Dreams: Land and Water in Low-Down California, by William deBuys

In low places consequences collect, and in all North America you cannot get much lower than the Imperial Valley of southern California, where one town, 186 feet below sea level, calls itself the Lowest Down City in the Western Hemisphere, and where the waters of the Colorado River sustain a billion-dollar agricultural industry. The consequences of that industry drain from the valley into the accidentally man-made Salton Sea, California's largest lake and a vital stopping place for migratory waterfowl. Today the Salton Sea is in desperate environmental trouble.

A second river also ends in the Salton Sea. It is a river of dreams, the remains of which may be seen in the failed real estate developments that sprawl beside the sea. As the ending point of both the real Colorado and this river of dreams, the Salton Sea has become emblematic of much of the history of the American West. Its troubling story is masterfully told here in William deBuys's narrative and Joan Myers's austerely beautiful photographs.

The story of Southern California is fundamentally a story about the control of nature. Beginning with the Yuman-speaking tribes encountered by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, deBuys traces the subsequent exploration and development of the region through the Gold Rush of 1849, the government-sponsored surveys that followed, and the inept tinkering with the river by an assortment of irrigation and development interests that resulted in the floods that formed the Salton Sea nearly a century ago. He introduces us to a gallery of rogues and dreamers who saw a great future for this arid wilderness but could never refrain from interference with the forces of nature.

The floods that produced the Salton Sea created a vast desert oasis, but the agricultural exploitation of the region, combined with evaporation, poisoned that paradise. The stark beauty of the desert, the engineering feats that have transformed the landscape, and the eerie spectacle of Salton City and its ruined beaches and abandoned yacht club are the subject of Myers's photographs, made over a period of more than ten years. In the last section of Salt Dreams, deBuys acquaints us with the human and avian denizens of the region, all struggling for survival as the twentieth century draws to a close. The history of chicanery and greed recounted in deBuys's narrative and his empathy with the desert dwellers he and Myers have come to know--hardworking laborers and entrepreneurs who live on both sides of the Mexicali border, eccentrics hiding out in the Salton Desert, pelicans dying of avian botulism--are crucial to an understanding of the border issues of today and the impassioned environmental debate on whether--and how--to save the Salton Sea.

Amazon.com Review
William Smythe, a Southern California booster, was not alone when in 1900 he expressed his hope that "the great brown waste which lies on the borders of two republics... will some time be as densely populated as the lands of the Nile, as rich in industry as the Kingdom of Holland."

A century later, the coastal desert of Southern California has indeed become a rich and populous place. The interior desert, however, along the U.S.-Mexico border, is as empty and poor as ever. Historian William deBuys and photographer Joan Myers explore that country, its virtual capital the salt-choked Salton Sea, in the pages of this fine book, which offers a deeply learned but readable study of the politics of water and land use in the arid Southwest. DeBuys remarks that for Europeans and Americans the land has always seemed a geographic tabula rasa, subject to making and remaking, a landscape in which dreams can come true--one of them being to remake an unforgiving desert into an agricultural treasure house. Those dreams, however, can turn into nightmares, as speculations fail and dunes reclaim what is rightfully theirs--for, as deBuys notes, "in low places consequences collect." Desert rats and students of California history will find many rewards in these pages. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Historian and author deBuys (Enchantment and Exploitation; River of Traps) offers an absorbing record of the ideas and people that tamed the Colorado River and transformed southeastern California from a desert into one of the continent's great agricultural regions. Expertly interweaving extensive historical research, interviews and personal observation, deBuys creates a biography of sorts of California's Imperial Valley, one that begins with the valley's first inhabitants, the Yuman-speaking natives, and extends to the present. Recognizing that an "infinity of human lives and relations" make up "the main cargo of history," deBuys wisely opts to make people the focus of his narrative, introducing readers to a gallery of rogues, dreamers and unsung heroes. Well-chosen quotations and document excerpts bring to life figures such as Penn Phillips, "Mr. Big" of California in the '50s, who deBuys contends made millions by selling worthless land along the polluted Salton Sink; William Smythe, who, half a century earlier, brought evangelical zeal to the cause of "reclaiming" the Colorado Desert for agriculture; and Godfrey Sykes, a 19th-century drifter, "delta rat" and "sympathetic witness to [the region's] troubles and transformation." DeBuys describes the devastating flood of 1905-06, which was caused partially by inept tinkering with the Colorado River and which led to the creation of the Salton Sea, the deepest point on the continent. Years of agricultural runoff and pollution have left the sea highly contaminated, and deBuys devotes the last section of his book to a concise examination of its ecology and current condition, and to possible solutions for saving it. Through his study of the Imperial Valley, deBuys offers a notable exploration of how the American dream has played out in one representative locale. 3 maps, 30 halftones; 100 duotone photos by Joan Myers not seen by PW. Review
Salt Dreams pulls off the neat trick of being both informative and highly engrossing. More than just illustrations, Joan Myers' beautiful black and white images constitute a compelling visual essay in their own right . . . . -- The New Mexican, December 5, 1999

Southern California may well go the way of the Salton Sea, that swath of once-desert south of Palm Springs that ran all the way south along the San Andreas fault through Imperial Valley to the border and to the ocean--a lake born after the accidental diversion of the Colorado River in 1905. It had its own yacht club, surely a sign of faith in the future, which now has turned to gaping holes in concrete and rebar and bits of old carpet, material for Myers, the mirage-eyed photographer whose black and whites (a rainbow of blacks and whites) are glaring testimony to the history deBuys sifts of the Salton Sea. When people can find beauty in trajectories like these, it reveals an unselfish faith in future generations and in the ability of the earth to heal around scar tissue. deBuys does the best kind of research, a highly evolved blend of literature and experience: He crosses borders, he squats with delta rats and consorts with bikers, spinning a geographic noir yarn of g! ! reed and hubris and ruination. -- Los Angeles Times, December 19, 1999

Unusual, Gripping, Compelling... Worth the time.
By A Customer
This is an unusual book. Recommend to those interested in the region, in remediation, in conservation, and in the overwhelming challenges that only increase in this endless dance between humanity and nature. DeBuys illustrates so well, and quite frankly, so poetically, the true folly of human initiative, and our continual misunderstanding of both the laws of nature, and the law of the land. Myers' stark pictures in black and white capture the the dark humor of what we, as a species, continue to do to the very planet that supports us... A very unique and arresting read. Bravo.

Wonderful!

Both informative and beautiful book about California's only sea. The history and information is nicely balanced with Myers' great photographs. Anybody interested in California beyond the cities should buy this book.

Reclamation/Folly in the Desert
By A Customer
Superlative read revealing the vast natural beauty of the desert and its inhabitants and man's irreversable errors in judging it as a fallen Eden. Together with Cadillac Desert it ranks as a southwest water classic. Beautiful writing and stunning photographs.

Great Collection
By musician
This is the best huge collection of first rate concert guitar literature out there at an incredibly reasonable price. The arrangements are great and faithful to the original compositions or transcriptions. I used to be a concert guitarist and had given away all of my music over the years. This is the best collection of so much of what I used to play and more.

A permanent referance!
By Sherman Lambert
This songbook grew to be my essential classical guitar practice book. The best thing about the book is the enormous selection. All the pieces are well transcribed. Some popular pieces are published elsewhere but I prefer the keys and clean arrangements of this collection. There are all levels of difficulty but regardless of your skills you will find many pieces to play. I see Classic Guitar Favorites as a source of music I will use the rest of my life. I feel this book gives me a limitless variety of playing challenges. There is no tab but that increases the efficiency of the book and it helps keep the price reasonable.

The Life and Death of Carolina Maria de Jesus (Diálogos Series), by Robert M. Levine, José Carlos Sebe Bom Meihy

In the dozen years Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914-1977) lived in a São Paulo, Brazil, shanty slum, she survived by rummaging for junk. She also kept a diary of her abject poverty. Black, illegitimate, and poor, she suddenly became at age forty-six Brazil's best-selling author when a book drawn from her diaries appeared in 1960. An English translation, Child of the Dark, was published in 1962 and sold over 300,000 copies in the United States in a decade. Newsweek heralded her book as "a desperate, terrifying outcry from the slums of São Paulo . . . one of the most astonishing documents of the lower depths ever printed."

Collaborating with a Brazilian colleague, Levine tells the story of Carolina's life, giving particular emphasis to the years following her publishing success, and engages in a provocative debate over what Carolina's life reveals about such issues as racism in Brazil, the rigidity of the country's class system, and the process of constructing an identity amid constant degradation and poverty.

From Library Journal
Two historians work jointly to produce a biography of a brave, courageous, and fiercely independent favela dweller from the slums of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Levine, of the University of Miami, and Bom Meihy, of the University of Sao Paulo, chronicle the life and times of Carolina Maria de Jesus, an illegitimate black Brazilian woman born into destitution in the rural interior who fled the countryside in 1937 at the age of 23 to seek a better life in Sao Paulo. The authors describe Carolina's life of misery and poverty as aptly as their subject did in her own diaries, first published to great success in Brazil in 1960 and later in English as Child of the Dark (1962). But they also explore the political, social, and cultural aspects of her life that she naturally would be inclined to omit, such as her sexual activities and the reasons for her lack of popularity in Brazilian intellectual circles. The book is especially useful for students of Brazilian history and culture. For academic and larger public library collections.?Philip Y. Blue, Dowling Coll. Lib., Oakdale, N.Y.

The Gila Wilderness: A Hiking Guide, by John A. Murray

From Upper Sonoran desert canyons to sub alpine mountain peaks, New Mexicos Gila Wilderness Area is a world of contrasts and diversity. Named a wilderness region by Congress in 1924, the Gila was the first place in the world to be so protected. Today it encompasses 1,000 square miles and protects the headwaters of the three forks of the Gila River. Blessed with the rich human and natural history, it is home to Indian, Spanish, and Anglo cultures and Central and North American flora and fauna.

In this complete guide to the Gila Wilderness Area, John A. Murray explores the regions natural history, highlights its human history, and provides tips for backcountry trips. The hiking section describes twenty-four trails for both the serious backpacker and the casual day hiker, in all covering some three hundred miles of trail. Each trail description gives directions to the trailhead, length, elevation, level of difficulty, scenic highlights, and natural and human history along the trail.

One of America's finest wildernesses
By Smallchief
The Gila Wilderness was the first official wilderness area of the United States and at about 900 square miles is one of the largest. It's also one of the most diverse with terrain from semi-desert at 4,800 feet up to sub-alpine spruce, fir, and aspen forest at a top of 10,892 feet. The Gila River is floatable during the spring melt and old Indian cliff dwellings are found in the canyons. Trout fishing in the Gila and its tributaries is pretty good, and wildlife is abundant. Hiking and solitude are the major attractions. You can walk for a week or more and never cross your path twice. The scenery may not be quite as rugged and spectacular as the Rockies or the canyonlands to the north, but there's plenty of beauty to be enjoyed.

This is an excellent guide to hiking in the Gila Wilderness Area. The author describes 25 hiking trails and routes, some of them more than 30 miles long. Each of the trails has a topo map that goes along with it plus a description. A lengthy introduction acquaints you with the history and natural history of the Gila, including the Apaches and other Indians who lived here. Appendices provide lists of birds, plants, mammals, and reptiles found in the Gila. An interesting study concerning the reintroduction of the Grizzly Bear to the Gila is reprinted in the appendices.

Possibly the most spectacular of the trails in the Gila is the Whitewater Trail which follows a narrow "catwalk" through a steep sided canyon. The catwalk was built more than a century ago to facilitate mining operations -- now long abandoned. The Three Forks area (Wilderness Ranger District) offers hot springs, cliff dwellings, and long, easy trails that lead into the heart of the wilderness. At lower elevations, the Gila can be visited and hiked year round, barring the rare snowstorm.

"When I grow up I will go there"
By John P. Jones III
John A. Murray quotes passages from Geronimo: His Own Story: The Autobiography of a Great Patriot Warrior and Conrad's Heart of Darkness as introductions to his guide to the Gila Wilderness. Geronimo once lived, and hid out in this vast expanse of pristine wilderness. Conrad never visited it, but the entire quote evokes the pull of "blank spots on the map" and why some of us declare we have to fill in the blank with our presence. The Gila has been declared the largest contiguous area in the lower 48 states that is "pristine," which means, on one scale, 97% the way it was when Columbus arrived.

Murray's book is more than a simple guide to the trails. The first third of the book is a brief covers the natural and human history of the area, along with some localized standard information on hiking in remote areas. The essential part of the guide is the descriptions of 24 different hikes. Each hike is prefaced with a box containing the trail number, elevations at beginning and end, total vertical ascent, length, recommended season, usage of the trail (heavy, moderate, etc.), the difficulty of the hike, access to the trail head, and the particular U.S.G.S. map. The box is then followed by a narrative description of the hike, usually a black or white picture taken along the way, and a copy of the topo map, with the hike indicated with a heavy black line.

This guide led me to the Crest trail (p. 77), which seems to be one of the best hikes in the wilderness, particularly in summer. It starts at 9,100 ft., and ends at 10,700, with virtually the entire hike being in forest. I've hiked it twice, to Hummingbird Pass (no, I didn't see any hummingbirds there... only when I returned to the campground did I see any). On the second hike, just last May, I was surprised to see the wreckage of a small plane just off the trail. Apparently it crashed in 2007, and was stolen.

There are a number of useful appendixes, and that includes various checklists for the common plants, fish, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and birds. Also useful is a section which explains the derivation of the place names. There is also a couple sections pertaining to the reintroduction of the grizzly bear into the Gila, and if I had the power, I'd veto it. It's one of the nice things NOT to have to worry about, since sometime you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you.

One of the "knocks" on this book is that it is over 20 years old, and therefore has no GPS information. Yes, once upon a time you could hike without one, but they are most useful, particularly in bad weather. Also, some of the reproductions of the topo maps, with the trail marked, were done to a scale as to make them almost unreadable. And it would have been useful to have a vertical graph of the trail. There appears to be one other hiking guide, a decade newer, "Hiking New Mexico's Gila Wilderness". I haven't read it, but there also seem to be numerous criticism in posted reviews.

It might be time for an update...or... maybe it is best to leave things "pristine," which means the hiker has to figure out a few things for himself. 4-stars for this effort.

Outdated trail guide
By C. Wayne Harden
I was disappointed with this guide book. The book was published in 1988, which means there is nothing about GPS in the book. I found the organization of the book to be confusing. The guide has maps of some of the trails, but they are hard to read and there is no map that provides a big picture view of the trails. Information about many trails in the Gila Wilderness is available, but would be more useful with an easy to find section providing information about each trail such as length, elevation changes, connecting trails, water availablity, etc. Several trails are cited as connecting to included trails, but no other information is provided.

practical suggestions for Christian married couples
By Deb Brammer
This detailed book has lots of information, good information, but each person will find some parts more helpful than others. I'm not sure exactly what theological perspective these authors come from, but they do take a stand on marriage being the only acceptable relationship for sex. While they state many helpful concepts about relationship in marriage, many other books deal with this. The most helpful part, I believe, is in the part that you don't see covered by other Christian books, the practical aspects of improving the sexual relationship of people who have already been married for some time. The practical aspects covered by a ob/gyn doctor as well as a Christian counselor, could be very helpful to many Christian couples.

Sexual Intimacy in Marriage is a Grand Slam!
By A Customer
Dr. Cutrer and Sandra Glahn team up for a tactful and at times humorous discussion of sexual relations between a husband and wife. More than a medical "how-to", Cutrer utilizes his medical expertise in combination with his years as a pastor to address a wide variety of intimacy-related issues. Glahn's candid humor and Cutrer's appropriate illustrations from former patients and parishioners distinguishes this book from many others on the same topic. The information is great, practical, non-threatening, and did I say...practical? After reading the book, my comment to my husband and his to me, was I wish I had this book ten years ago when we got married. The part about Christian women in a monogamous relationship claiming to have a better sex life is very understandable, and believable. Cutrer and Glahn introduce the subject of their book well on p. 26 with "to get wisdom, get understanding." Then the co-authors proceed to help the reader get both in an engaging, intellectually and emotionally stimulating and humorous way! Specifically I enjoyed the wonderful but simple analogies that were given throughout to help me, the reader, understand the concepts discussed - I found those to be the parts I was underlining the most. Spanning the arenas of anatomy, sexual fulfillment, marital roles, and protection from extra-marital involvement, the book embraces the reality of God-given biological desires and "expression of sexual love within marriage." 'Sexual Intimacy in Marriage' is a fresh approach to an age-old issue!

The Chain Gang: One Newspaper versus the Gannett Empire, by Richard McCord

"They're closing in on me, Dick, and I'm afraid they're going to get me," said Frank Wood, publisher of the Green Bay News-Chronicle, in a phone call to his friend and colleague, Richard McCord. Drained of cash and spirit, Wood could not hold out much longer against a devouring giant, the Gannett Company. As editor and publisher of the nationally distinguished weekly Santa Fe Reporter, McCord had successfully fended off Gannett's "Operation Demolition" when it moved into town. Now Wood was seeking the help of a survivor.

Startling case histories of the dubious tactics practiced by Gannett, unsparing insights into the newspaper industry, and harsh conclusions all come together in the dramatic story of these two men's efforts to save the small Green Bay daily from being obliterated at the hands of the nation's largest newspaper chain. Their success is a metaphor for one of the oldest triumphs of the world: that of David over Goliath.

"McCord has done something marvelous with this. He's taken a deeply disturbing nationwide trend and put it on a small midwestern stage with real characters. The Chain Gang's message needs to be heard by as many Americans as read newspapers. Already Gannett's monopoly tactics have impoverished communities across the country. McCord is one man fighting back, coolly, rationally, creatively, and stubbornly. Let's join him."—Michael Shnayerson, Contributing Editor, Vanity Fair

"More graphically than almost any other available record of the era, the Gannett piracy is what has happened to this country, tolled where the price is truly paid, in the lives of communities and people."—Roger Morris, winner of the Investigative Reporters and Editors' National Award for Distinguished Investigative Journalism

"Richard McCord's The Chain Gang takes the losing battle for the soul of American newspapers from the euphoric accounts on financial pages to show what corporate news chains can mean in human terms to the people and the vitality of the victimized cities and towns. His is a unique account of the power and depredations of the Gannett Chain under its glib empire builder, Allen Neuharth. It goes behind the facade of slick public relations and financial killings for investors to show what happens when a ruthless and ambitious wheeler-dealer gets control of our news."—Ben H. Bagdikian, media critic and Pulitzer Prize winner

One of the biggest under-told stories of the past 20 years is the engulfing of independent newspapers by large media chains. The Chain Gang is the account of two battles waged by Richard McCord with his independent newspapers against the Gannett Company. In Santa Fe, New Mexico, a small weekly he started had to fight for survival against Gannett and its nasty tactics. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, he again waged war against Gannett. His experiences make for a fascinating narrative and provide a real-life account of the struggle for an independent voice in the face of a corporate steamroller.

From Publishers Weekly
McCord has battled the Gannett newspaper giant twice and lived to tell about it in this fascinating book. Frustrated with big-city life, McCord and his then-wife light out for the territory?Santa Fe, N.M., to be precise?and start their own weekly. But when the Gannett media empire buys the town's daily paper, McCord has cause for worry. Some of the freewheeling business practices he ascribes to Gannett, such as lying to advertisers and setting prices off the newspaper rate card, are ethically dubious, while others border on antitrust. But Gannett's influence on the rest of the newspaper world makes it difficult to get the word out as McCord fights first for the survival of his own weekly, and then for that of a daily owned by a friend in Green Bay, Wisc. McCord tells it all from the viewpoint of a small-town underdog, and as he travels from Salem, Ore., to Little Rock, Ark., and Green Bay, discovering how Gannett subverts the good journalism it claims to champion, readers won't be able to help but cheer him on. Be warned, however: McCord is a quirky character. When he digresses from his battles to talk about his inner feelings, the narrative turns slightly mawkish and underwhelming (the reader feels every mile of a road trip described in Chapter 15). Overall, however, this book is nearly impossible to put down, for the media curious or those who just like a good scrap.

From Library Journal
The demise of locally owned newspapers and the disappearance of competing papers have been topics of growing concern among journalists, scholars, and citizens. As the owner of the Santa Fe Reporter, McCord shares this concern. McCord here details his own experiences confronting Gannett, the country's largest newspaper chain, describing real people and places in the dramatic struggle to save small papers threatened by the advance of chains. Worried when Gannett purchased the competing New Mexican, he researched the tactics Gannett used in Salem, Oregon, to destroy its competition. In a preemptive strike, he published articles on Gannett's dirty tricks, preventing the use of similar tactics in Santa Fe. Aside from detailing his own experience, McCord documents the struggles of other newspapers and his own efforts to work with a colleague to save a small Green Bay, Wisconsin, daily targeted by Gannett. This book reads like a well-written suspense story with an uncertain conclusion. It will be a valuable addition to all journalism collections.?Judy Solberg, George Washington Univ., Takoma Park, Md.

Gripping and disturbing - I couldn't put it down
By A Customer
You don't have to be in the newspaper business to find this book interesting. Even if all you do is read newspapers, or use them to line the rabbit cage, you will be astonished. This exhaustively researched, extremely well-written account demonstrates in graphic detail the lengths to which a desperate monopolist will go to achieve and preserve its monopoly profits. This is a really important book.

The Power of Investigative Journalism
By Bernadette Jusinski
After reading a recent interview of Mr. McCord published in the Santa Fe Reporter, I purchased this book. It is quite a story, based upon good solid research and good solid judgment. Mr. McCord started the Reporter in 1974, and not long after, feared for his paper's existence due to the voracious appetite of the Gannett organization. His research of Gannett's practices in other non-competitive markets allowed him to conduct a pre-emptive strike which enabled his paper to live to fight another day (even currently, as we read this). The second part of this book tells the battle Mr. McCord waged on behalf of a long-time industry friend near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Planning, researching, trusting the right people, and having the strength to do the right thing are at the core of this story.

Mr. McCord is a great storyteller, who knows which details he needs to justify his expose and which he should use to construct a report that even the non-journalist will be outraged by. In this day of "buy local", Mr. McCord's efforts on behalf of independent newspapers is must reading. Then, go out, do a bit of your own research, and buy a paper written by good, honest reporters and ethical publishers who know your region best.

The Chain Gang is a riveting story, which should be required reading for every journalism student. Indeed, it should be required for anyone who reads newspapers or their current electronic incarnations.

A must read for anyone concerned about newspapers
By A Customer
As a newsroom employee of a once-proud independent newspaper that was bought by the Gannett chain in 1997, I was told by colleagues who had read "The Chain Gang" that the book was a cautionary tale which would reveal the dark side of the corporation that had become my new employer. Unfortunately, I didn't take those warnings seriously enough, and I took my time about picking up the book. Now that a few years have gone by, and the newsroom staff at the paper I worked for has been decimated by the kind of cutbacks the bean-counters at unscrupulous corporations like Gannett delight in, I wish I'd read "The Chain Gang" much sooner.
If you're in the newspaper business and not working for Gannett yet, the chances grow greater each year that you will be. "The Chain Gang" helps explain why, and it's a sordid story.
By the way, I now refer to the newspaper mentioned at the beginning of this review as the paper I "worked" for, because after I challenged whether the paper and Gannett were living up to a corporate "ethics policy" Gannett professes to have adopted in 1999, I was transferred, against my wishes, to a much smaller newspaper the company owns. I'm continuing to try to fight that action -- not that I hope to have any kind of career with Gannett, of course -- but it would probably help to have someone like Richard McCord on my side, in his feistiest, most energized mode.
Having said that, my only real complaint with "The Chain Gang" is the melancholy, defeatist tone of much of McCord's epilogue, in which, despite the admirable personal triumphs he scored in battling Gannett, he ultimately depicts his efforts as gestures bordering on futility. But I can hardly fault McCord for his candor -- something any Gannett employee is bound to find refreshing.
It's truly appalling that such a shady company is among the corporations to which Americans apparently will be entrusting an increasingly disproportionate responsibility for upholding a freedom as precious as the First Amendment.
Can I give "The Chain Gang" any higher praise than to say that upon reading it I immediately bought a half-dozen copies to distribute to friends in the journalism business? But you needn't be a reporter or editor to appreciate this book. In fact, the focus is less on the journalism side of the newspaper business than it is on the advertising and marketing side. But that's appropriate, since that's clearly where Gannett's focus is too.
