The enormous popularity of this work as a college textbook and general reference and a desire to contain the most accurate information led to two previous revisions—the first (in 1981) edited by both authors and the second (in 2001) edited by Elizabeth Schwartz. Scientists and enthusiasts lost two great conservationists when Charles died in 1991 and Elizabeth in 2013.

Debby K. Fantz, resource scientist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Dr. Victoria L. Jackson, associate professor with the University of Central Oklahoma, have worked to ensure that Wild Mammals will continue to educate, delight, and inspire with this third revised edition. These two mammalogists have over fifty years’ combined experience conducting surveys and research, leading trapping workshops, designing distribution models, identifying mammals, and teaching courses in mammalogy and wildlife conservation and management.

The Wild Mammals of Missouri has grown from sixty-three full species accounts in the first edition to seventy-two in this third revised edition. The editors have maintained the basic structure of the book while adding much new information, including a full account for the elk with artwork by Mark Raithel, new trapping records, revised common and scientific names, enhanced Missouri county-level distribution information, updated range maps, and a discussion of the range expansions of the American black bear and nine-banded armadillo, as well as the increase in confirmed mountain lion sightings.

About the Author

Charles W. Schwartz (1914-1991) was with the Missouri Department of Conservation for forty years, serving as biologist, author, wildlife photographer, and wildlife artist. Elizabeth R. Schwartz (1912-2013) was employed with the Department of Conservation for over thirty years as biologist, author, and assistant in wildlife photography. Together this husband-and-wife team has written or illustrated thirteen other books and many technical papers for scientific journals and popular articles for magazines. They have also produced some twenty-four motion pictures and numerous TV programs, which have received both national and international awards.

Challenging, Tuneful Exercises

I enjoy attempting these on my euphonium. While written originally for flute, these have been nicely moved to the bass clef by Mr. Raph. Clearly, some of these would just have a more natural feel - with octave jumps, etc. - when played on the flute, but they are a challenge for any trombone or euphonium player in a variety of keys. If you like the logic and rhythm of Baroque music, you'll love these.

About the Author
Otero was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, who bore the same name, and who was born in Valencia, New Mexico in 1829, had built up a stellar career in the East. Miguel Antonio Otero, Jr. was brought up in a family of wealth and influence, but he also experienced the hardships of growing up in a household that was always on the move. His family's sojourns took him from one town to another across Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. During Miguel A. Otero's travels and frequent stopovers in Wild Western towns he came into contact with notorious outlaws like Clay Allison and popular lawmen such as Wild Bill Hickok, Pat Garrett, Elfego Baca, and other well known figures including Doc Holliday, William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody, General George A. Custer, and frontiersman Christopher 'Kit' Carson. In fact, Otero was such an adventurous soul that he always sought out, or was in close contact with, anyone making headlines during the turbulent era he lived in. He even published a short lived newspaper called the Otero Optic, which eventually became the Las Vegas Daily Optic. He began his illustrious career in politics as Las Vegas City Clerk, San Miguel County probate clerk, county clerk, and recorder, and district court clerk. Then in 1892 President William McKinley appointed Miguel Antonio Otero as governor of the New Mexico territory where he served until 1906.

About the Author
Rudolfo Anaya, widely acclaimed as one of the founders of modern Chicano literature, is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. Anaya was presented with the National Medal of Arts for literature in 2001 and his novel Alburquerque (the city's original Spanish spelling) won the PEN Center West Award for Fiction. He has also received the Premio Quinto Sol, the national Chicano literary award, the American Book Award from The Before Columbus Foundation, the Mexican Medal of Friendship from the Mexican Consulate, and the Western Literature Association's Distinguished Achievement Award. He is best known for the classic Bless Me Ultima.

A Novel With Something to Say

I know that when Heart of Aztlan came out it was pretty well bashed by the critics. Admittedly, it isn't up to the level of Anaya's best work (i.e. Bless Me, Ultima), and its flaws are pretty obvious. It's an unbalanced novel. So much space of the novel is spent following Jason and his struggles in a school that devalues him and his culture, and his story seems quite unfinished at the end of the novel. The magical realism is fine and important but is so suddenly introduced in the novel as to feel an intrusion. I've no problem with the presence or the shape of politics in this novel, but I did feel that Anaya was a little heavy-handed in its treatment. The beginning half of the novel is, to be honest, pretty dull.

And yet, despite these frustrations I have with the book, it has a lot of merit. There is a lot of heart in this story. The loss of land; the struggles of being caught up in the dehumanizing crush of work in the train yards and life in the city; the hopelessness and self-hatred that can be acquired in the schools; the strains that being poor, powerless, and marginalized can press upon a family; the sad plight of the family who is ostracized from even their own community--each of these struggles is vividly and compassionately depicted in the novel. And working against these forces is Clemente's rising consciousness, and the myths that he is coming to embody and invoke. When I get to the novel's ending (I won't give it away), it feels really right and really feels like something has been said in this book. The ending feels artistic, mythically charged, and you leave the novel with a sense of urgency, the desire to work toward a more just world.

So, it's not a perfect novel, not for everyone's taste, but it is, ultimately, a worthwhile novel, with something to say.
