Very good but some issues

After working my way through most of this book I have a few observations. First, I have enjoyed the versions of these common fiddle tunes -- they're varied and interesting. However, there are a few deficiencies. The biggest one is the CD itself -- all of the pieces are played only at full speed. While this is helpful in understanding the overall rhythm of a piece, it is not a very good aid to learning for those of us who only aspire to that level of proficiency. I found it necessary to use software to slow down these pieces when working on the more challenging sections. Another issue is the way the music is laid out in measures of 16th notes. This makes for rather long measures as opposed to 8th notes which (I think) is a more common way to present music in the bluegrass community. This book/CD would be greatly improved with slow and fast versions of both the pieces and backing tracks.

This book has helped me advance in my playing. The transcriptions are accurate, very similar to (if not the same as) what's on the disc, and the song selection is good. Really accelerates the learning process when the recorded music matches the transcription. By far the best book of the 4 I've tried. Also, if you mute one audio channel, you hear the accompaniment only, which is great for practice.

About the Author
Faye Lyons, DNP, RN, FNP-C, is a DNP-prepared nurse practitioner with experience in family practice, internal medicine (cardiology and neurology), dermatology, and aesthetic dermatology. Prior to becoming an NP, she served in the U.S Air Force and was an RN in Medical, Cardiac, and Surgical ICUs, and Dialysis. Her experience in dermatology includes working with the New River Dermatology Group (Blacksburg, VA, USA) and with Derm One (Wytheville, VA, USA). Her responsibilities included conducting skin assessments and performing biopsies, minor surgical and cosmetic procedures including Botox and Testylane administration, and Intense Pulsed Light procedures. Dr. Lyons is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as Dermatology Nursing certified Nurse Practitioner. Her publications include an award-winning poster on dermatology decision trees and 'Solving Skin Rash in Primary Care' (2012) Advance for NPs and PAs. Lisa Ousley, DNP, RN, FNP, is a DNP-prepared family nurse practitioner (FNP), a primary care provider, and a graduate online instructor at the University of Phoenix, USA. She was a hospitalist service provider for a 144-bed inpatient regional hospital (Galax, VA, USA) and primary care provider at Galax Family Care, an outpatient hospital-based clinic. Dr. Ousley was the sole provider for a comprehensive primary care outpatient clinic targeting public housing population (Johnson City, TN, USA) and, more recently, was Student/University Health Services Director, Eastern Tennessee State University (Johnson City). A powerful account of a Chicana/o community in Texas

This is a beautifully written memoir by one of our best Chicana writers. Seizing upon Roland Barthes's writings on photography, Cantu reconstructs her childhood on the U.S./Mexican border, teaching us that the border itself is an artificial barrier. This is a moving story of an American family that has worked hard and sacrificed much. We can only hope that the rest of America will recognize sooner than later the enormous contributions to U.S. history made by Mexican Americans.

Deceptively complex book

Cantu addresses the harsh realities of racism, poverty and Viet Nam without bashing you over the head with strident platitudes. The framework structure coupled with family album snaphots make the book fascinating and truly accessible for a variety of readers. One need not have grown up in los dos Laredos or along the U.S.--Mexican border to identify with this work; one need only be aware of the variety of borders constructed or imposed upon our lives.

Different worlds

Where Mexico and Texas meet—la Frontera—at the Rio Grande is not simply a river nor a border. No, it is an intersection of two cultures and two worlds. Author Norma Elia Cantu grew up in both. She tells the stories of this mid-twentieth century world in snapshots—photographs that linger in her family archives—and in short tales, no longer than a snapshot. Some of the stories, she stresses in her introduction, are direct memories of her own family, while others are strictly fictional. In either case, she has captured both a single life and a particular culture. In her introduction she declares her genre to be "fictional autobioethnography." That covers all the bases.

I grew up during the same time and in the same state as Cantu, but we lived in mostly different worlds. I relish learning about her world as I compare it to mine. But the worlds were not entirely different. These two little girls shared the experience of gathering the family around the radio to listen to Dr. IQ with his puzzling questions—that she listened in Spanish and I in English matters not at all. We also both remember and relish memories of our grandparents fiftieth anniversaries and long summer afternoons at the library.

It isn't surprising that some of Cantu's snapshots are remarkably like many of those in the box tucked under my desk. She suggests that "the stories mirror how we live life in our memories, with our past and our present juxtaposed and bleeding, seeping back and forth, one to the other in a recurring dance."

About the Author
Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) was born of Jewish parents in Vienna, Austria. After studying at the universities of Vienna, Edinburgh, and Berlin, he entered the Presbyterian ministry and served as a missionary to the Jewish people in Jassy, Romania. His other works include the classic study of the New Testament, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah.

Step Inside the Temple of Jerusalem

I bought this book a couple of years ago and reference it from time to time after having read it completely. This version, which updates Edersheim's magnificent 19th century edition, contains color photos of some of the best researched models of the Herodian Temple at Jerusalem and is your one-stop-shopping source for information on structure, priesthood function, liturgical song and rites. Eyewitnesses to the Temple, such as Philo and Josephus are consulted and cited. Rabbinic material is investigated and used to support the text.

The Temple is depicted in painstakingly detailed models and maps based on the best archaeological evidence and eyewitness reports. Edersheim and his successors then take you through the priesthood functions as well as the rules specific to behavior in/around the Temple, and funding sources such as the various taxes and offerings. Next the sacrifices are covered. I found the most striking chapter for me to be "At Night in the Temple," where Edersheim takes you on rounds with the priests and temple guard. Everything is here, the feasts, the Passover, the Day of Atonement.

If you're a Jew, this text will help you in your studies of pre-diaspora Jewish Temple worship. If you're a Christian, it sheds more context on the New Testament by filling in blanks that would have made sense to 1st century Jewish Christians. One can sense just how devastating the loss of the Temple in 70AD must have been for the religious Jews of Jerusalem.

Interesting details

The book 'The Temple' offers interesting details of Herod's Temple in Jerusalem...This is important because it would have been the temple that Jesus, his disciples and Jews in general saw and related to, and It was this temple that was destroyed by Titus in 70 C.E.

I do have a couple of issues with some of the descriptions of various sacrifices and temple services. The way Mr. Edersheim and Bimson wrote and edited the book often makes it hard to really understand what is being done and why...but if you have OTHER references books to fall back on when you hit one of these little snares this book is worth adding to your collection of reference works.

This volume in its first publication in 1874 was an invaluable compendium of information that bridged the gap between the ancient world of the first century and the modern era. The 75 full-color photos and illustrations plus the carefully revised and updated textual notes have only added to this value!

A master of the coming-of-age story, R!os is the author of several short story collections (The Iguana Killer, etc.). Fans of his fiction will recognize the origins of numerous stories in this short memoir of growing up in a small Arizona border town. The Nogales of R!os's childhood shared a virtually open border with Nogales, Mexico: business was conducted casually between the two towns and playmates wandered back and forth. Now there is a solid steel wall separating the communities. "This is not the border," R!os writes. "It's something else, something underscoring the difference between danger and grace, which is not something that separates people. It's something that joins them, as they face the same border." The wall forms a dark subtext to this otherwise delightfully innocent memoir, which is magnified when R!os and his first grade "gang" rush home to take midday baths after the sewage treatment plant contaminates the town's one dry riverbed. Later, effluents from unregulated maquiladoras (foreign-owned factories) create a stream that can bleach blue jeans on contact. Now Nogales has the highest rate of lupus in the U.S. But R!os's memoir is not an environmental diatribe. Rather, it is an extremely personal family history filled with small anecdotes and finely drawn landscapes. As a literary autobiography, it is perhaps too true to its title (capirotada is a kind of catchall Mexican bread pudding): a collection of memories that fails to match the power of R!os's fiction. Very very boring

I read this book because of One Book Arizona's sponsorship. It was boring beyond words, and I can't imagine why it won the One Book award. The people who voted must have been students of the author because this was not a good book.

My Childhood Town

I have never read a book about my hometown. This book took me back to my childhood days, and what it meant to grow up in a border town where everyone knew each other, everyone was friendly, there was no racism and you could sleep with the door unlocked, leave your keys in the car and it was safe. It also brought sadness at the same time, since Nogales is not the same Nogales of the fifties, sixties, seventies and even part of the eighties. It has grown extensively, has crime, and is no longer the little friendly town I once knew and loved.
Albert was at Nogales High School at the same time as I. He has truly written a BEAUTIFUL memoir of what my little childhood town was.I knew his family, his father married my husband and I and his mom pierced my ears. I was saddened by the fact that his father had passed away,(since we moved to culture shock California 10 years ago,I don't have much contact with Nogalians). But, believe me,you don't have to be from Nogales to enjoy this little marvel of a book.

MOST ENCHANTING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN A MULTI- HUED PLACE

Sometimes you just want to read something that warms your heart. Something that is so rich and abundant with kindliness and warmth that you have to pause several times in your reading to ponder and absorb. The author must have been a very "nice boy." A nice boy with kaleidoscope vision and compassion.
Nothing fancy. Just plain home-cooking, albeit sometimes spicy, like the chilaquilas recipe in the book, which incidently, is wonderful!
