About the Author
Diane J. Angelini, EdD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, is Director of Midwifery at Women and Infants' Hospital and Clinical Professor, Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Angelini was founding director of the Nurse-Midwifery Graduate Education programs at the University of Rhode Island College of Nursing and the University of Southern California (USC). She was formerly the Assistant Director of Nursing, Division of OB-GYN-Neonatal Nursing at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston) and Director of Maternal-Child Nursing at Danbury Hospital (CT). She is an Advanced Nurse Executive, Board Certified. Her publications include 18 peer-reviewed journal articles, 13 non-peer-reviewed publications, including two book chapters; and two books, "Case Studies in Perinatal Nursing" and "Perinatal Nursing." She is the Senior Editor and Founding Co-Editor of the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing, Associate Editor of Journal Watch Women's Health, and past Editorial Consultant and current peer reviewer for the Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a Fellow of the American College of Nurse Midwives and, by invitation, a member of the International Academy of Nursing Editors. She is a national presenter and consultant in obstetric triage.||Donna LaFontaine, MD, is the former Director of OB-GYN Triage and Obstetrical Gynecology and Emergency Medicine at Women and Infants' Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her publishing credits include three journal articles and one book chapter, When to Screen in Obstetrics and Gynecology: in Screening Tests for Contraceptive Users. Dr. LaFontaine serves on several hospital committees including Emergency Preparedness, Pain Management, Obstetrics and Gynecology Executive Committee, and Guidelines Committee, all at Women and Infants Hospital. She is a certified Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner and has been directing the Sexual Assault Program at Women and Infants Hospital since 2004. Dr. Lafontaine has received over twenty teaching awards throughout her twenty four year career as a physician.

With over 230 illustrations, over half of them in color, the authors trace the development of the hooked rug, from its origins in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century yarn-sewn bed rugs to twentieth-century examples of hooked rugs.

About the Author
Gershen Kaufman, PhD, was educated at Columbia University and received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Rochester. Professor in the Counseling Center and Psychology Department at Michigan State University, he is the author of Shame: The Power of Caring (1992). He is the coauthor, with Lev Raphael, of Dynamics of Power: Fighting Shame and Building Self-Esteem (1991) and Coming Out of Shame (1996).

This is my new Bible for the study of Shame. A broad review of the entire subject but uniquely allows the reader to dig deeper into the material so as to reach a much greater understanding of this complex and often misunderstood subject(s).
I have read many text books and books on shame and Gershen has been able to open my mind even further on the subject. He is one of the new bread of Pychology authors which allows the informed student to move freely within the material without experiencing ambiguous ideas or statement within the material. This book can set the stag for our ultimate understanding of a subject that influences our lives more than any other.

Insightful book with some limitations

Kaufman’s forte is not in academics, but as a psychological practitioner. Affect Theory and Script Theory, which serve as Kaufman’s foundation, are fringe concepts, lacking empirical evidence and integration into mainstream theories. Affect Theory is limited to automated (innate, hard-wired) biological responses to environmental stimuli, so it cannot explain more complex emotions associated with self-regulation, social values or cultural differences. However, one can replace and re-frame Script Theory in the light of Bandura’s Social Learning Theory since socio-cultural scripts are handed down, learned and internalized via social practice. For empirical psychologists and those who look for a differentiation between shame and guilt I recommend ‘Shame and Guilt’ by June Tangney and Ronda Dearing instead.
This leads us to the bright side of Kaufman’s book. His descriptions of the internalization of shame are highly insightful as much as his explanations of psycho-therapeutic interventions are useful to practitioners who will find this book to be a true inspiration. Numerous case studies illustrate more than sufficiently the topics at hand. I was wondering at times if the author does not over-generalize the phenomenon of shame. For example, many common psychological problems, such as depression, are not merely rooted in shame conditioning. Giving Kaufman the benefit of the doubt, he does bring his points across powerfully. This is definitely an eye-opening book for practitioners, but to a lesser extent for academics.

Clear, easy-to-read sheet music. A lot of Scott Joplin.

Includes: The Entertainer, Easy Winners, Swipsey, Maple Leaf Rag, Elite Syncopations, Weeping Willow, and more of Joplin. Also contains several cake walks, ... delightful pieces not often heard. This book removed the mystery of ragtime for me, an amature pianist, and I discovered to my great amazement, that, with some effort ... I can play it, even the Maple Leaf!

The Best of the Best

The Library of Ragtime and Early Blues by Amy Appleby and Peter Pickow is Outstanding.

As a New York school music educator, this is the best and most complete musical tribute of this era that I have seen. It deserves 10 stars and will definitely be a fantastic addition to add to your home music library. I highly recommend it for the more advanced piano student since ragtime and blues can often be a bit challenging to play.

The book has a beautiful introduction, table of contents (grouped by composer) and index. I like the fact that the name is printed on the edge of the white plastic binding, making it easy to find on a book shelf. All of the Amsco books in the library series that I own are attractively the same height. Each and every "rag" in this book is not only fun and exciting to play but appears to be easy on the eyes due to the fact that it is printed clearly on heavy, white bond paper.

My favorite ragtime composer is Scott Joplin. To my delight, there are 22 of his original compositions in this book. I began playing my favorite of all ragtime pieces, "The Maple Leaf Rag" the minute I received this book as a gift. It was the best gift ever! I didn't even know that Scott Joplin wrote a "Wall Street Rag." I liked the annotations over the different sections of this piece, such as "brokers feeling melancholy" or "good times have come."

I would be remiss if I didn't mention some of the other 40 composers in this book such as James Scott, W.C. Handy, Joseph Lamb, Scott Hayden, Irving Berlin, Tom Turpin and Eubie Blake, etc. There is also a whole section on Ragtime songs, such as Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" along with cakewalks, classic rags, blues rags and folk rags. I have hours of enjoyment ahead of me.

Good, but lacking some later material

I am a 14 year old pianist, and I love Ragtime & stride. This is a good collection. It comprises of many Joplin rags, 2 Eubie Blake rags, some James Scott, etc, and some Early Blues. It is one of the biggest ragtime collections available. I am disappointed, however, that some of the later (ie, 1915-25), more advanced ragtime is absent. It really could have used some 'Kitten on the Keys', or 'Cataract Rag' to "break the ice" on what is otherwise a bit of a dull, repetitive folio. What is there is good, but most is basically just the same.

I would instead turn to Dover for some more interesting ragtime folios

Great Book!

All the songs I love are in this book. It's not an easy piano book, for me anyways. If I could have seen the inside I probably wouldn't have bought it because my skill level is not that high. So when it arrived I was disappointed because it looked too hard for me but because I love their music so much I decided to try anyways. I found there are some songs that are easier to play and with the harder ones I just played the chords with my left hand which worked well and sounded pretty good. I took some pictures of the inside of the book so people can get a better idea of what they're buying.

Easy-medium piano part

Being a pianist and piano teacher, I look first at difficulty levels. This was about a Level 3-4, which is Late Elementary to Intermediate, especially if you know the songs already. The layout of the pages made it very easy to read. All the words and verses were there, including Art Garfunkel's harmonies. Guitar chord changes were not very frequent and used pretty basic chords (again, kind of easy). Overall, it was perfect -- and including songs of their four best recordings! WOW!

James Sexton met Ignacio Bizarro Ujpan in 1970, when Sexton traveled to Guatemala for the first time as a graduate student in anthropology. Ignacio became Sexton's research assistant and, as the men's friendship grew over the years of fieldwork that followed, Sexton asked Ignacio to keep a detailed journal. In his diaries, Bizarro chronicles more than a quarter century of the turbulent history of Guatemala, returning again and again to the themes of community solidarity, civil violence, alcohol abuse, resistance to repression, political turmoil, and the reinforcement of traditional and religious values that color daily life in the Maya communities of Guatemala's highlands.

Joseño: Another Mayan Voice Speaks from Guatemala covers the period from 1987-98 and is the fourth and latest volume of Ignacio's diary, the authentic life history of a common man, a campesino, a principal (elder) in his town, and a Tzutuhil Indian whose life has spanned the ongoing struggle for democracy and economic justice in Guatemala. His vivid and plain-spoken account of life among the Maya during the war between guerrillas and the army in the 1980s and 1990s offers detailed descriptions of the atrocities committed by both sides and brings the reader into a Mayan world richly textured with indigenous beliefs and practices. Ignacio's diary also records the Mayan cultural revitalization sweeping Guatemala, as well as the fortunes of the Indian peoples who have so often been pawns in the vicious power struggles between Left and Right.

About the Author

James D. Sexton is Regents' Professor of anthropology at Northern Arizona University and is the author of many articles and books on cultural change in Guatemala's highland communities.

Ignacio Bizarro Ujpán has served in numerous civil and religious offices in his town of San José la Laguna. He writes in his spare time, when he is away from his cornfields and coffee groves and when he is not helping his wife with her weaving projects. Bizarro has also collaborated with James D. Sexton on Mayan Folktales: Folklore from Lake Atitlán, Guatemala (UNM Press).

Within this extremely interesting and timely book Sexton translates Tzutuhil Mayan Ignacio Bizarro Ujpan's diary entries of eleven years from 1987 to 1998. Sexton's Introduction expertly presents a backdrop of the historical, political and cultural contexts the Guatemalan Indian people find themselves in today as they attempt to survive the modern political climate in their ancient land. Sexton skillfully blends Bizarro's eyewitness accounts of the horror resulting from being Indian in Guatemala. Bizarro tells the story of his people as they cope with being caught between opposing forces of state military troops and the guerrilla bands that have wrapped Guatemala in decades of civil violence.
Via Bizarro's graphic personal narrative, Sexton excitingly and sometimes somewhat sadly, brings to the reader the ongoing, heartbreaking realities experienced by Bizarro, his family and friends. Throughout this book it is evident, despite unbelievable hardship, that the Guatemalan Mayan Indian people continue to love their country and sense of place. Bizarro's statement of, "that is why I say that in Guatemala there is no peace," is followed with his words, "Guatemala is such a beautiful country, so good that God has placed its green countryside in the center of America, where the little birds sing their songs in praise of God All-Powerful. But it's a pity that my beautiful country is going everyday from bad to worse. Every day they [current political regimes] are bathing it with the blood of their [Mayan] children who loved so much this beautiful land of the quetzal."
Sexton's ability to pursue the anthropological method of life-history fieldwork with Bizarro, which now spans more than three decades, is not commonplace. Bizarro and Sexton have collaborated for a period of over thirty years. This fascinating, firsthand account of the modern Tzutuhil Mayan lifeway as told by Bizarro and translated by Sexton, is only made possible through their long, continuous relationship. Bizarro's is a most touching story. Sexton, in his choice of photographs, illustrations and admirable organization of the book, brings together the beauty and the strength of the Tzutuhil Mayan culture around Lake Atitlan as Bizarro tells how his people live with modern-day political dramas as they unfold in the highlands of Guatemala.

I felt the author revealed, supported and substantiated his observations of the miriad of different world philosophies and religions. He was very convincing and logical with few presuppostions concerning illogical/incongruent world ideologies.
He makes the case for Christianity in a real sense. He shows the application of truth tests that are objective and do not dissolve under scrutiny.
In short. He remained objective, logical, internally and externally consistant.

It is well said that we ought not to judge a book by its cover, maybe size is a better word here. But the author has done an extremely successful job of putting across the arguments for Christianity as rational, objective, rational, livable, and believable. If nonbelievers are put off by heavy-duty books on Christian evidences, then they will not go wrong in getting hold of this book. But be forewarned, this book will get you upset over what you are believing about your worldviews! I got mine in Australia while on holiday. Can't seem to find it in Singapore though. Anyone has any ideas of bringing in a load of it to Singapore?

This is the second copy of this book that I purchase. Dan Story has done a great work in describing worldviews and devising a system for their evaluation as to the truths of their contents. This makes it simpler to compare one worldview to another as to truths knowing that truth is that that corresponds to reality or what is real. I bought this copy as a gift to a fellow christian believer who is eager to learn the basic principles of apologetics or defense of the christian faith.

An In-Depth Account of Kahlo's Private Life

Tired of reading all the Kahlo biographies full of facts in a "documentary style" format..? Then this book is for you. This Kahlo biography, with a splash of Mexican history, presents an in-depth look at the private life of this famous Mexican painter in the style of a novel. This book is written for young adult readers and is very well written, well organized, easy reading and full of tidbits of information not found in other books. Once you start to read it you can't put it down. When you're finished you will know and understand the real Frida Kahlo. Highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

If you are looking for information on her paintings you won't find it here. Not much is said about her paintings and there are only 6 small color and 3 black & white illustrations of her paintings and 6 black & white photos. In the back of the book there is a very brief chronology.

“Why should a particular game, played with a round ball by twenty-year-olds in short pants often hundreds of miles away, mean so much to me, since I seem to have so little to gain or lose by its outcome?” Fred Hobson thus begins Off the Rim, his narrative of college basketball and society, of growing up and not growing up. He seeks the answer to this question by delving into the particulars of his own experience. Growing up in a small town in the hills of North Carolina where basketball was king, he became a rabid UNC basketball fan (like many others) at the tender age of thirteen during the Tar Heels’ “magical” 32–0 national championship season in 1956–1957. He starred as a high school basketball player and lived a dream by “walking on” the highly successful 1961–1962 Carolina freshman team. That was also the year Dean Smith was elevated to head coach of the Heels. Hobson observed firsthand Coach Smith’s difficult early days before he became the winningest coach in college basketball. Forced to find a substitute for his beloved sport after not making the varsity his sophomore year, Hobson turned to the romance of books, both reading and writing them. Changing his major to English, he discovered the joys of William Faulkner and Richard Wright, Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O'Connor, and H. L. Mencken, and made a career teaching American literature. This is a book about basketball that is more than a book about basketball. It is, in the beginning, a depiction of a part of the South that departs from the usual idea of Dixie, a look into the culture, religion, and politics of the Carolina hills. It is a portrait of the people who made up the South, including the author’s parents, who both were and were not conventional southerners. Finally, in some respects, it is the story of a boyhood that never ends, relived each year during basketball season in the frantic, tortured life of a fan. Although Hobson’s story is largely about the Tar Heels—and about other things related to growing up in the South of the 1950s—what he says about basketball, childhood, and adulthood also holds true for those who find themselves in emotional bondage to Hoosiers or Bulldogs or Ducks, to Wolverines, Gophers, Badgers, and various other species of Upper Midwestern low-lying ground fauna, to Blue Devils or Blue Demons, to Tigers, Wildcats, Cougars, and all other breeds of cat.

Not just a basketball book

The cover of the paperback version of this book has this promotional blurb from Bill Bradley at the bottom, "If you love basketball, you will love this book." It's not perfect logic to say so, but the clear implication is that if you don't love basketball you shouldn't waste your time. And that would be a mistake.

The part of the book I found most edifying, and what I think will end up making the book most valuable in the long run, is in the first half before the author gets so deeply involved in his own basketball exploits. I say that as a lifelong basketball fan and a small town contemporary of Professor Hobson who had a somewhat more successful high school basketball career than he did and about the same level of accomplishment (or lack of accomplishment) thereafter. More interesting to me were his descriptions of family and small town life in the Yadkinville of the the 1950s. In the attitudes of his parents, who were surely among the county's gentry, we have a living example of the very un-American complete absence of materialism that the truly great Southern social thinker Richard M. Weaver talks about in Southern Tradition at Bay. Hobson's father thought displaying one's prosperity was vulgar, and when he eventually built a mountain cabin retreat, he made it freely available for church groups and such to use, partly out of a sense of guilt, Hobson believes. And the idea of selling any of the great surplus his enormous garden produced was anathema to the elder Hobson. He gave it all away, of course. That was the rule in my small Southern community as well.

And although his mother, like the mothers of so many Southern writers, Hobson tells us, had a better formal education and was much more cultured and generally "better bred" than his father, he makes no mention of any actual job that she ever held. We do learn that she was active in the church and community and we gather that she was well respected and hardly lacked in self-respect. We also learn that his parents had a strong, stable marriage, but the author doesn't seem to realize that there might have been a connection between all those things, or maybe he is just afraid of offending modern feminist sensibilities.

Because Hobson writes so well, his book might be even more interesting to general readers with curiosity who are non-basketball or even non-sports fans than it is to the hardcore types. Surely the latter can recognize themselves in Hobson, but I should think that the former must wonder at times what makes those people tick who keep the "Dean Dome" and similar sports venues sold out all the time. There's no better way to learn than from this very literate and truly fanatical insider. I don't know the first thing about, say, the poker culture, but I think I would read a book about it by an actual player who writes as well as Hobson.

But I, for one, am hoping that he will write at least one more book that only tangentially mentions basketball and takes a cue or two from my cross cultural product links of personal memoirs and family profiles:
Fighting Angel; Daddyji; The Grass Roof and The Yalu Flows: Two autobiographies of early childhood and young manhood days in Korea at the beginning of the century (The Norton Library, N766); The Divided Land: A Tale of Survival in War-Torn Korea; Home Was The Land Of Morning Calm: A Saga Of A Korean-american Family

I'd like to learn why Yadkin County has voted Republican since the Civil War, unlike almost every other county in the state and what's the full story surrounding the tearing down of Yadkinville's historic courthouse and replacing it with a red brick monstrosity. I'd also like to see a full treatment of the mindless school consolidation movement that swept across the country shortly after the author graduated and cut the hearts out of community after community. With this book, Hobson has told us just enough about these and a lot of other things to tantalize us.

Follow the bouncing ball

Is there anything stranger than the psychology of the sports fan? Are there human beings other than religious martyrs that endure more suffering for such ephemeral, fleeting rewards? Before we had Nick Hornsby's Fever Pitch; now, in Fred Hobson's immensely entertaining new memoir, we have an American version of the lifelong sports fan. Even Hobson's title, Off the Rim, suggests the pain of it all - the near-miss that in the end may count more than the perfect shot, the swish. This is truly a guy's book--a book by and about a guy. Indeed, allow me to confess that, in this age of gender equality, I for one find it difficult to imagine a female version of the inveterate, die-hard fan that Hobson so painstakingly paints, maybe because I think too highly of women. Nonetheless, this is also a tale for women readers--a cautionary tale in which they can gain a glimpse into the interior life of the men in their lives, those fans whose love of sports is part of an elaborate strategy to protect their inner boy. It also seems not to matter that Hobson has been a lifelong fan of a team, the University of North Carolina Tarheels, with an incredible winning record. Maybe that's why Cubs fans seem so patient--do they already know the evanescent nature of the pleasure of victory, compared to the deep, lingering angst (the joy?) of losing?

Hobson's book is a great read, even in the middle of summer and hence as far from the winter season of college basketball as one can get, for as Hobson informs us, for the true fan, there is no off-season, no time without dread. Basketball, like life, is all about getting ready as a youngster . . . and then enjoying a lifetime of reminiscing. Put a stethoscope to Hobson's heart, and what would one expect to hear if not the echoing bounce of a basketball in a musty summer gym?

Small Town Life

Off The Rim is, in my opinion, better than last years's "To Hate Like This Is To Love Forever." Both the author and I grew up in small towns in North Carolina in the fifties, and I could see my town and my friends on every page.
