About the Author
Rudolfo Anaya, widely acclaimed as one of the founders of modern Chicano literature, is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. Anaya was presented with the National Medal of Arts for literature in 2001 and his novel Alburquerque (the city's original Spanish spelling) won the PEN Center West Award for Fiction. He has also received the Premio Quinto Sol, the national Chicano literary award, the American Book Award from The Before Columbus Foundation, the Mexican Medal of Friendship from the Mexican Consulate, and the Western Literature Association's Distinguished Achievement Award. He is best known for the classic Bless Me Ultima.

A Novel With Something to Say

I know that when Heart of Aztlan came out it was pretty well bashed by the critics. Admittedly, it isn't up to the level of Anaya's best work (i.e. Bless Me, Ultima), and its flaws are pretty obvious. It's an unbalanced novel. So much space of the novel is spent following Jason and his struggles in a school that devalues him and his culture, and his story seems quite unfinished at the end of the novel. The magical realism is fine and important but is so suddenly introduced in the novel as to feel an intrusion. I've no problem with the presence or the shape of politics in this novel, but I did feel that Anaya was a little heavy-handed in its treatment. The beginning half of the novel is, to be honest, pretty dull.

And yet, despite these frustrations I have with the book, it has a lot of merit. There is a lot of heart in this story. The loss of land; the struggles of being caught up in the dehumanizing crush of work in the train yards and life in the city; the hopelessness and self-hatred that can be acquired in the schools; the strains that being poor, powerless, and marginalized can press upon a family; the sad plight of the family who is ostracized from even their own community--each of these struggles is vividly and compassionately depicted in the novel. And working against these forces is Clemente's rising consciousness, and the myths that he is coming to embody and invoke. When I get to the novel's ending (I won't give it away), it feels really right and really feels like something has been said in this book. The ending feels artistic, mythically charged, and you leave the novel with a sense of urgency, the desire to work toward a more just world.

So, it's not a perfect novel, not for everyone's taste, but it is, ultimately, a worthwhile novel, with something to say.

Not All Okies Are White

I happen to be part of one of the families discussed in this book. I found it to be quite nice. I wasn't mentioned in the book but my mother, grandma, granpa etc. was. I think Geta did a fabulous job in making this book a success! It took a lot of time to archive this information about my family, and through this book, I am able to know where my ancestors came from and pass the book on to my children in the years to come. thank You.

A Fun Way to Learn About Bible Stories

Like the "Rub and See" books, these two "Look and Find" books are perfect for teaching the young and not so young about Bible stories! Each page describes a passage from a different Bible story, and tells the verse where you can read the story in its entirety.
What makes these Bible story books different, are the hidden objects you are asked to find on each page! I don't know about you, but there's something about "look and find" books that make them fun for all ages! In addition, children can color in each Bible story picture when they've located all the objects - or they can do that first! Either way, these books are sure to be a great hit! Highly recommended by MyParenTime.com.

Show and EvanTell part deux

Thanks to Kregel Publications for providing me with copies of Larry Moyer's book Show Me How to Illustrate Evangelistic Sermons in exchange for this blog post and review. I am passionate about preaching and want to grow in my ability to preach sermons that are impactful. I particularly want to be used by God to bring people into his Kingdom.

Larry Moyer is the founder and CEO of EvanTell, Inc., a ministry which trains people in evangelism. He has a Masters of Divinity from Dallas Theological Seminary and a D.Min from Gordon Conwell and is sought after as a speaker in evangelistic outreaches and training seminars across the country. He has written several other books but all are on the theme of Evangelism and books to aid new Christians.

As the companion volume to Show Me How to Preach Evangelistic Sermons this book endeavors to help preacher's messages connect with non-Christians. Moyer begins by outlining the usefulness of illustrations and gives advice for finding illustrations and the use of humor. Moyer contends that a well illustrated evangelistic sermon has at least fifteen illustrations (for a 30 minute sermon).

Most of this book provides examples of illustrations and advice for their use under three headings: Sin, Substitution and Saving Faith. These correspond to the three essential elements of Evangelistic messages which Moyer describes in the previous volume.

What I like about this book is its discussion on the use of illustrations. I enjoyed reading a number of his examples, but personally would not make much use of them. There are quotes, jokes and stories that illustrate different aspects of Evangelistic message. While many of these are good, I find my best illustrations have been one's that I have personally gathered. I do not harvest illustrations from books of illustrations because they are less compelling to me, and therefore to my audience. So I read with an eye toward Moyer's practical advice.

In the end, I find Show Me How to Preach Evangelistic Messages the more helpful book. Both books have good things to say, but if you just get one, get the other one.

I previewed that book yesterday because I felt both books needed their moment in the sons This second book is a helpmate for preachers to connect the message for non-believers. I was very impressed with the way Moyer begins the book by outlining the usefulness of illustrations and shows the reader where to find illustrations and how to use humor in the message. Moyer's way is that a well- illustrated evangelistic sermon should have at least fifteen illustrations in a 30 minute sermon. He uses three main headings in his book: Sin, Substitution, and Saving Faith. Moyer believes that these three are essential elements for Evangelistic messages. I loved the illustrations he gave. As a lay speaker I find locating illustrations difficult so I am glad that Moyer provided so many. I would use both books at the same time when preparing a sermon or speaking at a speaking engagement.

Individuals who deliver a message from god based on His word are called Preachers or Evangelists and they are generally found behind a pulpit on Sundays or weeknight meetings. However, there are those that do the same work from blogs and other media that would benefit from this book just as much. The best way to drive home a point is with an illustration. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so a word picture can really tell a story. Moyer does an outstanding job of showing what an illustration is and how to use it wisely. This book is a resource that will be used over and over again. I recommend this book highly.

En décadas recientes la consejería clínica se ha ido dividiendo en áreas de especialidades, dependiendo de la edad del paciente, el género, o el diagnóstico. Hoy día es muy común encontrar consejeros que se enfocan en trabajar exclusivamente con niños, otros con adolescentes, adultos, mujeres, personas con depresión, con estrés postraumático, y otras categorías. Que esto sucediera era cuestión de tiempo, y algo necesario y enriquecedor para la consejería clínica.

Estas especializaciones no son posibles en el ministerio de consejería pastoral. ¿Cómo podría un pastor negarse a dar consejería a un adulto argumentando que su ministerio de consejería pastoral se reduce a los adolescentes, por ejemplo? Por eso es necesario que los pastores seamos conscientes de los retos que presenta el hecho de aconsejar a diferentes grupos de personas. En una reseña anterior comenté acerca del libro Consejería Bíblica: Manual de Consulta Sobre Adolescentes¸ y mencionaba las particularidades de dicho sector de la población. El libro que me propongo reseñar aquí es el tomo 4 de la serie Consejería Bíblica que Editorial Portavoz ha tenido a bien publicar. Consejería Bíblica: Manual de Consulta Sobre Mujeres (Clinton & Langberg, 2016) es, como su título indica, un manual que ofrece una guía orientativa sobre cómo aconsejar bíblicamente a mujeres. ¿Por qué un manual enfocado exclusivamente en las mujeres? Muy sencillo, porque ellas sufren problemas exclusivos en las mujeres, que los hombres no enfrentamos.

Un ejemplo es el tema del aborto espontáneo, o el aborto inducido, embarazo, menopausia, por mencionar algunos. Aunque un aborto, por ejemplo, es algo que puede suceder en el ámbito del matrimonio, afecta de diferente manera, física y emocionalmente hablando, a la mujer que al hombre. Por ellos es necesario que dispongamos de literatura que ofrezca información para aquellos que estamos en el ministerio pastoral y de la consejería.

En sus 333 páginas, este libro aborda temas como los mencionados anteriormente, abuso sexual en la infancia, depresión, cáncer, divorcio, dolor crónico, envidia y celos, y otros muchos temas. Los autores presentan el proceso de consejería enfocando el acercamiento en la consejería con mujeres. Como es habitual en los libros pertenecientes a la serie Consejería Bíblica, cada capítulo aborda un tema diferente. Los capítulos comienzan con retratos de casos que pueden suceder en la vida real, definiciones e ideas clave, entrevista de evaluación, consejos sabios, pasos prácticos, ejemplos bíblicos, y oración.

Como ya mencioné en reseñas anteriores sobre libros de esta serie, el propósito de estos libros no es proveer teoría sobre asuntos de psicoanálisis u otras teorías de psicología. Por el contrario, los autores proveen herramientas prácticas, para que incluso personas que no tienen ningún tipo de fundamento en el área de la psicología puedan ayudar a personas en situación de crisis. La inclusión de pasajes bíblicos ayudará al consejero a ofrecer a la persona una perspectiva bíblica del problema que está enfrentando. Eso ayuda a las personas a normalizar su situación y a entender que incluso personajes de la Biblia pasaron por situaciones semejantes.

Las definiciones e ideas clave es un apartado de incalculable valor, especialmente para aquellos consejeros que no están familiarizados con términos como la depresión o la ansiedad. Known primarily as the printer of George Bellows's lithographs, Brown (1864-1936) was also a great printmaker and a fascinating painter in his own right. His oils betray influences ranging from the Impressionists and Fauves to the Hudson River School. In this excellent, sensitive, richly illustrated biography, Adams, former director of the Tamarind Institute, views Brown as an adventurous spirit who founded a utopian art colony in Woodstock, N.Y.; climbed the Sierra Nevada mountains; taught at Stanford University; and exhibited in the New York Armory Show in 1913--but died in poverty and obscurity. Crayonstone

OK, so I am Bolton Brown's great granddaughter and that fact may have influenced my star rating. Good interesting book though, with beautiful copies of some of his original lithographs. Details of his founding of the Woodstock artist's colony and the art school at Stanford University as well as a peak into American history at the turn of the 20th Century are also included.

Textbook!!.

It is a textbook. Nothing interesting otherwise. I might enjoy the class but, the teacher............. The reason I gave it five stars is the kindle version is a very good tool. I have several books with Pearson Publishing,because the school uses their products. The online labs are great but their eTextbooks are terrible. If you can go any other way I strongly advise it. You can not copy and paste. It has a terrible search. The format does not fit well in the window when you are trying to work side-by-side. Terrible and costly. I highly recommend using Amazon's kindle download for eTextbooks.
